Apocalypse Homebrew Datasheet - Space Wolf Great Company

Postby WolflordHavoc » Sun Mar 01, 2009 9:56 pm

This formation is intended to represent (as well as capture the 'feel of') one of the 12 Space Wolf Great Companies. The formation does not follow the Space marine Codex so its size is not limited to that of a Battle Company (various sources give the approx strength of each Great Company as between 120 - 1000 marines) although it must follow some of the somewhat archaic rules of that Chapter. Also as there are no reserve companies from which to attach Speeder squadrons, Support tanks etc (which would be crewed by members of the Great Company itself) these are included as part of the organisation.

Formation: 300 pts + Cost of models

1 Wolf Lord (Ragnar Blackmane or Logan Grimnar 'may' be selected as the Great Company) with 4 + Wolf Guard Body Guard's
1+ Wolf Priest (Ulrick the slayer 'may' be Selected) - may have 4 + Wolf Guard Body Guard's
1+ Rune Priest - may have 4 + Wolf Guard's
1+ Wolf Guard Battle leader - may have 4 + Wolf Guard's
0-1 Venerable Dreadnaught

Note that you may not have more Wolf Priest's and Rune Priest's than there are Wolf Guard Battle leader's

Note: There must be at least 1 HQ Choice for each 750 points (rounding up) of the Army.

0+ Dreadnaughts
1 Iron Priest for each Dreadnaught or landraider in the force
6+ Grey Hunter Squads
6+ Blood Claw Squads (up to half the Bloodclaw squads must be Troops - the rest may be Bike or Jump Pack squads)
0+ Speeder Squadrons
0+ Attack Bike Squadrons
3+ Long Fang Packs
0+ Whirlwinds
0+ Predators
0+ Vindicators
0-1 Leman Russ Exterminator

May have Upto 1 Land raider (of any varient) per each Character with a Wolf Guard Body Guard and Long Fang Pack in the army.

Note: In addition to the above minumums etc you may have one 'each' of the following - Bloodclaw Squads (of all combined types), Dreadnaught, Land Speeder Squadrons, Attack Bike Squadrons, Whirlwinds, Predators, Vindicators - for each Grey Hunter Squad in the army. I.E. 6 Grey Hunter Squads up to 6 of each of the mentioned units

Note: You may have 1 Long Fang squad for every 2 Grey Hunter Squad in the army.

Note: You may have 1 Wolf Gaurd Squad leader for each Grey Hunter Pack, Bloodclaw Pack of any type (but the Wolf Guard must be equipped with a Bike if in a bike squad or a jump pack if leading a jump pack squad) and Long Fang Pack.

Transport - Any unit may ride (at the points given in C:SM) in a Drop pod, Rhino or Razor Back so long as the unit (including attached Wolf Guard Pack Leader) can fit inside.

Space Wolf Scouts - These Elite recon specalists operate outside of the remit and control of the Wolf Lord's and so are not included as part of the Datasheet.

Assets:
Hungry for honour

- All units in the army may make a Scout move so long as they can draw LOS to the Wolf Lord (or his Transport if embarked). This move is made after all models are deplyed but before the start of turn 1. Also this move cannot be a bike 'Turbo boost' or 'flat out' move by a skimmer and must follow the normal rules for scout moves.

- Also any that can draw LOS to any character may be counted as being Stubborn for the purpose of Leadership tests (obviously this makes any SW character Stubborn). Long Fangs are always considered to be stubborn.

- If either the Wolflord and (if attached) Venerable Dreadnaught are slain/destroyed then leave the slain/destroyed model on the table. It now counts as an objective.

Evenin :D
0-1 Dread, 1 Wolf lord And taking into account that the sheet cost+ an HQ will fill up the first batch of points.
Your going to be fielding a lot of priests? (in the codex they also have a 0-1 cap)
How does the legion generally fight..do they normally have 30 battle leaders and then a top tier command group of priests dread and lord(just glancing at the codex the rules seem to imply that)
note also your terms of language don't mention special charectors where as GW ones (see chaos etc) normally say "kharn or a lord with mark of khorne" etc.. did you deliberately ignore them.. or did you see teh wording as redundant?

I don't see that much harm on loosing the 0-1 cap on the leman russ 9they are a mass production tank even if the space wolves don't have that many). If your fielding 8000 points etc.. how about for every 3 HQs you can field one from those HQs personal arsenal?

Its fairly balanced.
Does scout confer itself to landraiders? I know that by raw as a dedicated transport it technically can.. but do you really want it to go that far? Can predators scout?
Must they still be in LOS to the scout lord at the end of teh scout move or just at the start?

New codex is due soonish (summer/autumn??) brimstone says that smurf players will defect in droves..watch out for any humoungous rules changes if you take your sweet time deploying the sheet.

Thanks for replying KMB (I trust you and yours are in the very rudest of health?).

I just want to point out that I was bored last night - and tonight I am wolfing down (no pun intended - honest) my dinner before racing around to Matts in order to lose a game of Warhammer (thats like 40K but with out many guns and more Pychic powers). So I cannot answer now.

I will, when able, answer your questions/include your useful suggestions at my earliest.

Regarding the Priest - never really had to consider it before as 1 of each character and a Ven. Dread = 5 HQs which is (5*750) 3750 points!!

I will think on it some more........<ponders>

Would point out that the 0-1 limitations don't always apply in Apoc, it's just Named Characters that can't be duplicated. IIRC
Collector of Space Wolves, and all round awful painter!

For formation they can be applied, he could take more leman russ exterminators, but for that particular formation he's allowed 0-1.

This is very true - but in character.

Well in the dex the priests are a 0-1 (and not actually part of the Great Company in org terms....in practice however....) but given that Wolf Priests are supposed to be the Chaplains, Chapter Medics, recruiting Sgts and Chapter Training staff all in one go I suspect that their is more than 12 of them .

Also in the older fluff Wolf Priests were really really old Long Fangs who's Packs have all been killed off and are considered wise enough to become Wolf Priests.

And the Rune Priests again like their Codex brethren have many tasks with in the chapter - Checking the purity of the Recruits, Pyshic Comms and battle field support, advisors and they are the bearers and story tellers of the chapters history etc - again I think that their would be more than 12 of them.

I have made some changes incorporating your observations/ideas

I agree with everything you say but according to the Dex the Space wolves maintain a 'Handful'. I think of them as almost 'iconic' vehicles which is why I listed them as 0-1 (I am trying to be fluffy!)

The 'Scout move' is intended to represent the Space Wolves barely restrained nature and abilities as 'hunters/Stalkers' allowing them to 'ambush' their enemy. I sort of know what I mean.

I was thinking of adding a "Bloodclaws who can draw LOS to (Wolflord/any Character?) at the beginning of an assault phase where they are about to charge gain the Furious Charge USR"???

 I was bored with the waiting - this is simply a mental exercise - on the subject I don't see the harm of each new codex including an Apoc Formation (s) for that given race (discuss).

That was a true feat in diplomacy :)
Apoc sheets in the codex? With the ork release they provided a bunch onlilne, and then kind of tired of the "free" support. There is that new book due soon..But Free + GW seem to be going through a bit of a purgatus at the mo.

personally i would rather the space in the codex was used for stuff everyone can use (whether that is a unit that wouldnt otherwise make the cut, a painting guide, some conversion examples, extra art or fluff, or studio armies etc), and then have the Apoc sheets available to download at the time the book is released.

Yeah it was an 'of the moment idea'.

Mind you - they used to include missions for an Army in the codexii.
