1500 Vanilla Marines

Postby Socaddict » Tue Sep 01, 2009 6:51 pm

Thought I'd see what people thought of My list, and what I could do to improve it. Here goes nothing:
Code: Select all
HQ: Space Marine Captain
Space Marine Captain w/ Frag Grenades; Iron Halo; Krak Grenades; Power Armour; Relic Blade; Storm Shield; Jump Pack

HQ: Space Marine Chaplain
   Space Marine Chaplain

Troops: Tactical Squad
9 Tactical Squad w/ meltagun, ML
Sergeant w/ Bolter; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Fist
Razorback: Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Twin Linked Heavy Bolter

Troops: Tactical Squad
9 Tactical Squad w/ meltagun, ML
Sergeant w/ Bolter; Frag Grenades; Krak Grenades; Power Fist
Razorback: Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Twin Linked Heavy Bolter

Elite: Terminator Assault Squad
   5 Terminator Assault Squad
      Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield (x5);
      Land Raider Redeemer

Fast Attack: Assault Squad
   8 Assault Squad
    Sergeant w/ Power Fist

Fast Attack: Attack Bike Squad
   2 Attack Bike Squad w/ 2 MM

Total Roster Cost: 1487

The idea being that the captain runs (jumps?) around with the assault squad, and the chaplain and termies play splat with anything and everything,w hile making the msot of the lovely AV14 provdied by the redeemer. Attack bikes are on armour hunting duties, and the tactical squads will probably combat squad unless KP are in play, with the melta/fist group going on a seize ground and kill stuff mission, while the ML groups ping away at long range light armour or light infantry, and hold objectives that I start with.

Thoughts?

I hate the current SM codex, marines must be in units of 10 to get special and heavy weapons, but you get a 6 man transport vehicle!

But a six man transport vehicle is perfect for a five man combat squad and accompanying IC, or for one of the squads that doesn't require ten men, such as sternguard.

I have recently ditched the storm shield on my IC, he was getting a 4+ anyway..and I suddenly realised I was just using up a hand "because".. (those points could go into a combi weapon, arty armour,or somewhere else in the list)
Have you bought the redeemer a multi melta and or extra armour? Both seem fairly usefull (when trying to get close to deploy..when going up against another landraider)
Do you really get to swing that fist with your 5 men tacticals?(I have an unreasonable hatred of 5 man fist squads, due to the weight of hits the squad take before hand taking him out.. but as I say I recognise that my response is irrational :) ) I go for flamer, combi flamer..Melta combi melta.. and let the dreads, ICs ,full squads do the fighting.

Apart from those niggles it looks quite fun :)

I picked up a vindicator recently, and wanted to use it. Thinking about swapping out the EA on the LRR for a MM and 5 points to play with elsewhere.

*Bump*

Might use those five points to give the captain some melta bombs to assist in some tank killing power. That way I could always split him off from the assault squad if a target of opportunity presents itself.

Melta bombs sure are handy on an IC. I tend to make sure they all have them.
I know you swapped it out now for the vindicator (with the mandatory siege shield) but was there as reason you picked a 2 strong unit of attack bikes and not 2 x 1 bike units?

WTF?? mandatory :D, you could buy a regular dozer blade for half the cost.. one lets you ignore terrain, the other will only fail if you roll a 1 and then afterwards another 1. If you needed to make that 5 points into 10 points for something else..I'd do that. (cough like stick a multimelta on the redeemer..cough)

Read the comment I already made - the five points gained are from switching the extra armour on the redeemer to a multimelta.

As for the attack bikes, I'm very much meh on them. in terms of price, a single vindicator is cheaper, as well as looking cooler and providing an extra distraction from the landraider. I hadn't really decided on whether to run the attack bikes as one or two units either, that was just the easiest way to fiddle it with army builder.

Many apologies, I double checked by reading your list, which didn't have it.. what did you think of my earlier points re shield and fist?
If you could squeeze another 5 points (on top of that already squeezed..which I can't easily spot) you could get a storm sheild for the assualt marine sergent.I presume you don't really want a lascannon on the troop choice?

Ermm 125<2x50? ..Vindies are cool I use them, MM attack bikes are cool I use them, apples and oranges :D They both have different ways of pressuring your opponents, vindie is certainly better if you face hordes or nurgle, MM attack bikes are slightly better against MCs,AV14 vehicles and getting cover :D Looking cool ..I run an old chassis version, people tell me this is not cool, meh :D

Just as an aside, what would you recommend for 1500 pts vs Necrons?

Isn't that so off topic that a mod should split them?
Without writing a page.. the basics have always been termies and AV14..as they really struggle against both.Pie plates such as the vindie help get rid of the troops, especially if you can find a way to get the orb out of the equation (DA siegewing would just win the war of attrition), A speedy super CC unit going for sweeping advances (such as a smurf command bike squad) could be good in bigger points matchs 2000+.

Hope it's not that far off!
Thanks for the suggestion, points me in the right direction. :D

I meant price to buy for the vindie. Attack bikes are £15 a pop (before any discounts), vindicator is £25.

And rule of cool - Vindie>>>>>>>Attack bikes.
