1850 GT Competition List w/ Dark Eldar

Below is my GT competition list that I have been using. It is a bit unorthodox, but runs the normal Take All Comers list that Dark Eldar are great at, with a few independent tweaks that most people don't use, and that I have had varying successes and failures with. Feel free to ask any questions that you have and I will gladly answer them!

Total cost is, of course, 1850 pts.

For that pt value, I have 12 Dark Lances, 11 Blasters, and 16 Haywire Grenades for Anti Tank. I have 4 Liquifier Guns, 8 Splinter Rifles, 17 splinter pistols, and 10 Splinter Cannons for Anti Infantry. And of course, 3 dedicated close combat units to keep bad things away from my shooting units.

The Ancient goes with the Wracks to give them Furious Charge, because they both start with their own Pain Token, while the other two Haemonculus go with the Wyches to give them Feel No Pain from the start of the game. Once within Assault Range, the wyches will disembark with the Pain Token, while the Haemonculus stay in the Raider and flies around dropping Liquifier templates from inside the Raider.

The Ancient will disembark with the Wracks, and head straight for any Monstrous Creatures and/or Independent characters in range to shut them down with the Mindphase Gauntlet while the Wracks beat on them and any unit they are attached to with the 4+ Poisoned CCWs they have that will usually be reroll to wound on the charge.

The trueborn will stay in their Venoms or disembark into cover, depending on how far the Venom moves, and help the Ravagers and Raiders to shake/stun any tanks and transports, while the Venoms will unload 12 Poisoned 4+ shots each into any unit that is either causing shooting trouble my wyches can't reach that turn, or to soften up a target before the wyches get into assault.

The 5 man Warrior squads will use their one blaster from inside their Venoms as much as possible to back up the Trueborn and Ravagers, or if there are no vehicles left, they will try to get within Rapid Fire range of some tough infantry to help soften them up with the Blaster and Splinter Rifles, and also be set for late game objective grabbing and contesting.

wow, this is similar in alot of ways to my list and then alot more like the list I saw in the GT here just a few weeks ago, that Gordy played against.. and lost.

I think I'll give this one a go sometime. As soon as GW release a Venom!! :(

Definitely try the Mindphase Haemy with Wracks... if your opponent runs an IC with I5 or below, you will ruin his day on the charge, because you have 5 attacks on the charge, and with WS 5, you will never need worse than 4+ to hit, and that is a STR and LD test for EACH hit!! All he has to do is fail one of them, and his IC gets to do nothing for the rest of that assault phase, and you still get to wound him from the Ancient!

And then the Wracks are I5 on the charge, so they should swing before the majority of troops that will be against you, and you direct as many attacks against the IC as you can in the hopes of him failing enough saves to die, then you worry about the unit he's with! That or if they are not fearless, direct all the Wrack attacks against the unit, and hope to win combat by a failed LD test for another pain token!

hi,


dont know much about DE and the guys at my club havent played them recently.

If you were to come against a BA foot army IE:

Dante & Sanguinary guard (5)( all melta)

2 x 10 man Assault troops (2x melta & 1x Meltabomb in each sq)

3 x 5 mn Vanguard ( 2x melta bomb squad + CC, 1 x Lighting claw sq)

that about 1500, i would add a assault sq to make 1850, how would you combat this?

I would have an assault/anti tank army, so would you, if i could get an insight to your tactics, that would help for when i come up against DE soon enough! :D

No vehicles, purely a Deep Strike into melta range, combat squad assault sqs for objectives, Vanguard assault on DS if possible.

Reason i ask, I know a couple of the guys are building a DE army and ill be looking at a tournie soon.

I would put everything on and move them all flat out on turn one so your turn two when ur reserves start coming down piece meal I would get cover saves against your melta and then you would get charged and shot to death with AP weapons.

This is exactly how I beat my mates BA army at our club. It wasn't pretty ;)

This can work, but just remember Elvis, there can be two other strategies they can use against you.

1) They can also reserve everything just like you do, and if you win the roll and go first, you lose 2 turns of shooting and assaulting, while they only lose one of each. If you win and give them first turn, they simply implement King's tactics on their second turn, and then repeat turn two against you after you shoot. If they win, they hand you first turn, and the first scenario happens again, and if they win and take first turn, then they implement King's tactics again.

2)This strategy requires a list other than mine, and it must have Duke Sliscus in it, or they will have to spen 5 pts per vehicle for retrofire jets, which noone ever buys, so if they do this one, they more than likely have Duke Sliscus. Basically it revolves around matching your deployment ability by deep striking all of their vehicles, which the Duke gives them the ability to do. This is not the best strategy though, because there are of course chances to lose entire vehicles and squads, however, the fact that I can drop in on an opponent anywhere on the board, particularly out of his range and within my own is always an effective tactic, at least to a certain extent.


Myself, I would choose option 1 and give you first turn if at all possible. Then, depepnding on what of your army was on the board and what of my army made its reserve roll, I could either Flat Out my skimmers for the cover and to stay out of melta range, or I could move on up to 12" and shoot you with everything in my army, while still effectively staying out of range of the majority of your shooting. The problem with DSing armies agianst Dark Eldar is that if we get the chance for the alpha strike, we will take it and it will hurt you, especially with no vehicles to back you up as targets for our Dark Lances. In this list I have 3 Ravagers with 3 Dark Lances each, and if there are no vehicles on the board, they are going to light up the toughest opponents, or kill the things that I think would demoralize you the most, and in looking at your list, Dante and his guard have the best armour save, but Dante is the only one with an invul. So my Lances will whittle that squad down to nothing quite fast, and Dante doesn't have Eternal Warrior, so if you fail an Invul with him, hes gone. I then have more than enough CC troops to hold off your assault and vanguard squads, while my 5 man Warrior squads in their Venoms zip off on turn 4 or 5 to sit on any objectives for a turn or two.

All together, you have a good list that takes alot of strategy to combat, and I would love to face you across the board. Hopefully after my deployment I can get stationed in Germany so I can come up to the UK sometimes to game with a few of you, and if so, I would love to face this list, because the 2 BA players that I have around here love to flood the field with Predators, and I am getting tired of having to fight all mech Blood Angels! :mrgreen:

Hmm, good to know, reading on the DE, its hard to capture an armys strong points if you dont play them or against them!

Seems like a very hard tactic to beat!, thanks for the input!

When the dex came out my 3 Baals or 3 vindys were essential! now im trying to refine the mobile foot army

I spent 3 years in Osnabruck, East Germany with the British Army (2004-2007), now I am at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, then ill be based in Gibraltar! If you do get deployed to Europe, do come across to the UK, booked in advance I could get civi flights for about £150 return.

There are two ways to have a good chance against Dark Eldar, and that is to either cripple our speed, or bring ALOT of armor. We have the weaponry to easily mow down horde armies, and we can reliably keep tanks useless if that is all that is on the field. But if you run 3 preds, 3 Baal Preds, and some Razorbacks, thats alot of vehicles I have to concentrate on to keep them from blowing up my paper airplanes!! I have a Space Wolf player around here that loves to bring the Razorback spam lists against me, so I've had plenty of practice learning how to defeat a mechanized army with DE, hence the amount of antitank that I have in my list!
