2 Death wing Lists 1750 New FAQ

Postby Confused_gordy » Thu Jan 20, 2011 5:54 pm

Hi guys, posted a possible Black Templar list the other day. I tried something very similar to it out this week, but wasnt massively impressed really felt the lack of speed, in reaching my enemy/having to take break tests all the time, so I thought I would go back to the drawing board.

So here are the next list I might be using at the independant GT, and also the march meetup when there is time to practice, but which one to use?

Belial (thunder hammer storm shield) = 130
Belials squad - 3 thunder hammers and storm shields (1 is apoth, 1 is standard), 2 lightning claws = 270
Squad 2 - 3 Thunder hammers and storm shields, 1 chain fist, 1 cyclone = 235
Squad 3 - 2 Thunder hammers and storm shields, 1 power fist, 1 chain fist, 1 cyclone = 235
Squad 4 - 1 Thunder Hammer and storm shield, 3 lightning claws, 1 cyclone = 235
Squad 5 - 1 Thunder Hammer and storm shield, 3 power fists, 1 cyclone = 235
Venerable Dreadnought - Plasma Cannon = 145
Land Raider Crusader - extra armour = 265
Total = 1750

OR
Belial (thunder hammer storm shield) = 130
Belials squad - 3 thunder hammers and storm shields (1 is apoth, 1 is standard), 2 lightning claws = 270
Squad 2 - 3 Thunder hammers and storm shields, 1 chain fist, 1 cyclone = 235
Squad 3 - 2 Thunder hammers and storm shields, 1 power fist, 1 chain fist, 1 cyclone = 235
Squad 4 - 2 Thunder Hammer and storm shield, 2 lightning claws, 1 power fist, 1 cyclone = 235
Dreadnought - Plasma Cannon = 125
Dreadnought - Assault Cannon = 125
Dreadnought - Assault Cannon = 125
Land Raider Crusader - extra armour = 265
Total = 1745

I think the 3 dread list would look better, and at least slightly distract the opponent from the big sign on the LR saying shoot at this, but I'm not sure if 20 terminators is enough.

Your Thoughts?

Ill test the one you choose on tuesday and take some picks for a report

I'd go with 2nd but dropping the 2 donkey cannon dreads and taking a second LRC EA myself.
Perfectly memorise assualt distance for both of them to cover weaknesses within the (remaining 2 termie units and 1 dread)footslog.

Wait for RT\ljundhammer to post, he is king of all things DW (got to GT finals with them pre faq)

It depends on what you want...

There are some goodish posts on 3++ about DeathWing, which pretty much boil down to "don't take DeathWing, take DoubleWing". This is valid, as in a competitive list, this is a far stronger build.

Given that this is a new army for a tournament I'll run down the route that you want it to be competitive rather than 'pure' DeathWing.

Secondly, while assault terminators are nice, they have some significant problems in a DeathWing army. In a SM army they are a DeathStar where the rest of the army is able to support the small moons as it gets to where it needs to be. In a DeathWing army, the Death Star is your army, and therefore lacks support - for that reason, in a pure army, I'd recommend not using them. They can be got away with in a DoubleWing army, I think, but I'd need to see what support you'd give them.

The optimum DeathWing squad, I'm confident will look like this:
Sergeant - PW/SB
Terminator - CF/SB
Terminator - PF/SB
Terminator - TH/SS
Terminator - CML/PF/SB, or PF/AC

That gives you a 3++ to use against plasma/lascannon etc, but doesn't cut down on your shooting (and therefore threat range), whilst still being awesome in assault, and so long as you aren't fighting a dedicated assault unit or character, you'll normally only have 1 or 2 power weapon saves to make. It also helps with torrent of fire, as you'll be able to wrap wounds as you like, as each terminator is unique.

I wouldn't bother with Dreads, as you can get more terminators/bikes for the price - only use them for 'odd points' left over. Whatever Dreads do, Terminators do better & score, they won't take the heat of LR destroying weapons, as this boils down to melta guns - lascannons & all other heavy weapons are a threat to Dreads, they are laughed off by Land Raiders & squads should be getting cover saves.

Regarding DoubleWing - the exciting bits are scoring attack bikes (if you take Sammael), but more importantly, very cheap typhoons!

I'm afraid I can't give any list advice yet on DoubleWing as I haven't thought-hammered them yet (post a list if you want & I can critique it, but I haven't got a positive 'do this' list yet), but if you want to go down the pure DeathWing front, then I'm very happy to help.

Odd thing about DA speeders, multimelta and typhoon launchers is viable. (Other codexs I'd avoid due to anti infantry being more shots.. but here its a free upgrade to MM on a relatively cheap typhoon..go 3 reliable anti tank shots stationary /1 antitank moving super fast and 2 scattering anti troops)
