[1850] Adeptus Mechanicus ~ The Magdran Tech-Cult (C:WH)

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Wed Aug 16, 2006 7:46 pm

hey all!

Dan suggested i posted this, so here it is :)

this list is still on the drawing board as a long term project - so far all I've actually bought/built is a single Servitor that I've converted and painted, and a Tech Priest conversion on my painting table waiting for more attention. the rest will follow, but its going to cost a lot and take a lot time.

for now its just a plan (and lots of ideas etc), but i am quite happy with the list. its not intended for competitive play, i don't care if i lose every single game - the whole point is that its fluffy and cool. :D

this isn't a "standard" AdMech list either - its built around a unique theme, so to understand where I'm coming from, you'll need a bit of background...

Magdra Prime is where all my current (and planned) armies are based. its a Hive World (a bit like Necromunda), heavily industrialised and covered in ash wastes. the planet is owned jointly by the Imperium and the Adeptus Mechanicus, and its a rather uneasy partnership (the respective rulers sit in opposite hives convinced the other is plotting to get them, and a secret war is being waged tentatively throughout the ancient tunnels that connect the neighboring hives).

this list will allow me to field a Tech Cult that devoted to and lead by itself to an individual Magos Master, known only as "Machinos". http://www.ageofstrife.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=1085#1085 [read fluff here]
Machinos has been with me ever since i started 40K 10 years ago. over time his story and image have evolved. the battles he has fought in (2nd & 3rd ed 40K & Inquisitor) have shaped him, and his fluff is strongly influenced by actual events at the tabletop (e.g. the battle at the Sanctuary was part of an Inquisitor campaign, as was his "Resurrection").

as you can tell, I'm quite attached to him, so he got special treatment in the list (read "point sink") - as i said, I'm not expecting to win any tournaments (or even games) with this list - i just want a chance to use him on the tabletop again, with his own army in tow for the first time. a lot of the things in the list might not make sense if you haven't read the fluff, but if that's not your thing, suffice to say he now thinks he is The Machine God incarnate, and he pulses with arcane energies. he has declared himself rightful ruler of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and any who get in his way will feel his wrath. he has a polarising effect on any devotees of the Machine God that he meets - they either see him as their holy leader and worship him or see him as a heretical abomination and try to destroy him. the Imperium are worried by this potential rift, and fear that civil war on Mars would weaken the Empire as a whole. they have dispatched Inquisitors and Assassins to deal with him, but as yet none have been successful. outnumbered and hounded from all sides Machinos sees this as proof of his his power and fights to win support and defeat those who oppose him.

the list uses the WH Codex and the "counts as" rule, as i felt they were the best army to represent my unique "cult" force. no, rows of shiny tanks or power armoured superhumans wouldn't do for me. ;)
the list is written as if it was taken from a real AdMech Codex - look in [brackets] for what things "count as" in rule terms. as i said, I'm quite happy with the list, so I'm not really asking for suggestions or improvements (extra ideas might be nice though) - I'm just posting it to share and see what you think. :)

so without further ado, here's the list:

Code: Select all
Adeptus Mechanicus Army List ~ The Magdran Tech-Cult (1,850 points)

HQ:

Tech Priest Magos Master ~ Machinos, The Machine God Incarnate
Machinos [Inquisitor Lord]: "More Machine than Man" [Power Armour, Bionics], The Axe Mechanicus [Master Crafted Force Weapon], Inferno Pistol, Arc Lightning [Scourging, Rosarius, Frag Grenades].

Retinue:
Magos Medicae [Chirurgen]: Surgical Attachments [CCW], Autopistol [Laspistol].
Magos Reconstructica [Chirurgen]: Repair Tools [CCW], Laser Cutter [Laspistol].

^ one to treat wounds to his remaining flesh and organs, one to repair his mechanical parts. when it comes to choosing casualties to remove, the Medicae will go before the Reconstructica, as he is less important fluff-wise (despite being identical in-game).

Code: Select all
Servo Skull [Familiar]: Close Combat Attachment.
Tech-Cult Preacher [Sage]: Sonic Disruptor & Amplifier [Laspistol & Close combat Weapon].
Lexmechanic [Sage]: Laspistol & Close Combat Weapon.
Bodyguard Servitor [Acolyte]: Cyborg Body [Carapace Armour], Laspistol, Manipulator Arm [Mancatcher & Melta Bombs].
2 Cyber Mastiffs [Acolyte]: Cybernetic construct [Carapace Armour], Jaws & Laser [Laspistol & CCW]
Magos Combaticus [Warrior]: Carapace Armour, Power Axe, Close Combat Attachment, Conversion Field, [Crusader: Power sword & Suppression Shield], Frag & Krak Grenades.

^ a Tech Priest dedicated to weapons technology and improving CC power. ive converted this guy already, based on the IG Engineseer, except he's holding the axe in one hand and a grenade in the other, and switched the servo arm round to his right hand side, and changed a few minor details)

Code: Select all
Magos Gravitis [Warrior]: Carapace Armour, Graviton Gun [Veteran Guardsman: Melta Gun], Targeter, Frag & Krak Grenades, Close Combat Weapon.
Magos Pyros [Warrior]: Carapace Armour, Flamer [Veteran Guardsman], Targeter, Frag & Krak Grenades, Close Combat Weapon.

Tech-cult Priest [Priest]: Laspistol, Power Axe, Conversion Field [Rosarius], Frag Grenades.

^leads the Electro Priests in battle

Code: Select all
TROOPS: Tech-Cult Servitor Platoon

Tech-Cult Servitor Squad #1 [Inquisitorial Storm Troopers]
3 Servitors [Storm troopers]: Hotshot Lasgun [Hellgun], Targeter, Frag Grenades.
2 Servitors [Storm troopers]: Grenade Launcher (Frag & Krak), Frag Grenades.

Tech-Cult Servitor Squad #2 [Inquisitorial Storm Troopers]
3 Servitors [Storm troopers]: Hotshot Lasgun [Hellgun], Targeter, Frag Grenades.
2 Servitors [Storm troopers]: Grenade Launcher (Frag & Krak), Frag Grenades.

^ Min sized Troops squads, just to fulfill the requirement. the real "troops" of the army are the cultists (Electro Priests, Zealots). the Servitors fill more of a Heavy Support roll, giving covering fire as the army advances.

Code: Select all
HEAVY SUPPORT:

Tech-Cult Arch-Zealots [Penitent Engine Squadron]
3 Arch Zealots [Penitent Engines]: 2 x DCCWs, 2 x Combined Flamers (Heavy Flamer).

Titan Barrage [Orbital Strike]
Lance Strike.

^ the Titan strike represents the fact that Machinos has sympathisers in high places that he can call on! i also thought it was fitting that he would get to call down his wrath on his foes.

Code: Select all
"Liberato Devinus" [Exorcist]
[Exorcist missiles, Dozer Blade, Extra Armour, Holy Icon, Laud Hailer, Search Light, Smoke Launchers].

I've had a great idea for this. its going to be a ruined shrine that was built over an ancient war machine. Machinos gave the machine the Spark of Life and it awoke, rising out of the ground on massive spider-legs. the shrine is going to be made from CoD kits, it will have a pilot servitor sitting in the pulpit taken from an Exorcist, the legs will be scratchbuilt and it will mount the rocket pod from the Hyperios underneath. its gonna be massive!

Code: Select all
ELITES:

Tech-Cult Zealots Squad #1 [Arco-flagellants]
6 Zealots.

Tech-Cult Zealots Squad #2 [Arco-flagellants]
6 Zealots.

^ one squad will come straight out of the box, the other will have buzz saws, shears, drills and chainsaws instead of swails ("swails" = "swirly flails" - my wife made it up :D)

Code: Select all
Electro Priests [Sisters Repentia]
Magos Conductis [Mistress]: 2 x Neural whips.
19 Electro Priests [Sisters Repentia].

^ its always been about the Electro Priests for me. ever since i read the Codex Imperialis i wanted Electro Priests. Sisters Repentia has a perfect statline (almost exactly matchig the 2nd ed rules) - of course, Machinos with the power of the Machine Spirit coursing through him will attract plenty if these true-believers, so a max size squad was a must.

i only found out earlier this year that there was actually an Electro Priest model (!)
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f20/lordmalektheredknight/electropriest94.jpg
unfortunately, i cant get my hands on any of those, so il have to convert. planning on using Chaos Marauders, with shock rods, power mauls etc, and conducting rods on their backs.

*********************************************************

so there's the list. what do you think?

I've got 99% of the conversions planned out already, but I'm still interested to hear about any ideas for bits i may not have thought of. :D

cheers for reading:)

Looks like an interesting list. You should start picking out models before GW ramp up prices again :P

I've already got a growing collection of figs for my Ad Mech army. I'm also considering one of the massive kits of the WW2 railguns to use as the basis for an Ordinatus, and I'm looking for suitable small track parts to make heavy servitors (part flesh, part metal bodies, heavy weapons for arms, tracks rather than legs, counts as Penitent Engine/Dreadnought/Sentinel/whatever large item in the codex I end up using).

Here's my collection of figs so far:

http://www.ageofstrife.com/gallery/Spack75

(although I've also got another 5 or 6 servitors in my bits box waiting to be put together, and plenty of Inq Stormtroopers for standard troops)

And I've got a FW tech servitor on the way, plus a Squat Techpriest on the shelf right now.

I'm also considering buying a bunch of non-GW figs. Hortwerth on Warseer has designed his own figure range, looking very Ad Mech, which he's intending to cast and sell himself. Details are at http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38227 These would be perfect as cultists, or Skitarii. He's also working on little track units too, http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=782493&postcount=30

I'm guessing you've got a copy of Tim Huckleberry's Ad Mech list for 40k 2nd ed already, it's a shame it never made it to a 3rd or 4th ed revision or a CA list.

before i can properly start the army i need to move house and find a new job. once i can afford to do them i wont really mind what they cost, if that makes sense - either i can do them or i cant. just dont tell GW as they may put the prices up even more just to spite me

cheers for the link :)
i wont be getting any, though, as i play at a GW store. :(
i was going to copy The Hoff's troopers, but then i got inspired to make a cultist list instead. :D

Ah, the joys of house moving. I'm sticking with the one I've got for the forseeable future, house prices have gone nuts since I bought it back in 2001 and I don't think I could afford to move. Luckily it's a large 1930s semidetached house, and the garage at the side means I can extend it easily to add a few more rooms if needed (most of the other houses on the road have been done already).

My Ad Mech force took another step forward today -- got the 3 Cenobytes from GW MO. And I'm picking up a FW Tech Servitor in 2 weeks from Warhammer World as part of my larger order - some of us at the club are taking a day off to go play there, drink in Bugmans, and mooch around :)

cool! wish i could just pop round to Bugmans.
youl have to drink one for me

p.s. ive got a big folder of "AdMech suitable" parts - i save the pics from the GW Online Store, by their product codes, sort of a virtual bits box. need to find a good way of sharing it without uploading all the hundreds of little pics or copying all the codes indiviually into a list, then i can share it... any ideas?

I've written a rough little VB app that can take a folder of images and create index pages of thumbnails from them, could use that and then slap the results in a folder on a web site. Adobe PS has something similar but it tends to create really flashy pages that are overkill for something like this.

Copying codes into a list is very easy - assuming you're using Windows, pull up a command prompt and go to the folder where the files are. Then type this:

Code: Select all
dir *.* /b > list.txt

Open up the list.txt file in a text editor, do a replace with blank string on the dir name (the /b strips out all the junk you don't need in the list but makes dir output the full path for each file :(). Ta da! Very quick parts list :) And if you've got the names of the parts as the filename as well as the part code, even better.

Final option - send them to me. Zip them all up, and I'll create a parts catalogue album from them. I'll also set it up so you can add more images as you find them if you like. I'll pm you my email address (check the little text menu at the top of the forum ;))

OK, I'll break it down: VB = Visual Basic. app = Application. Better? :P

The application is here: http://www.worldofspack.com/software/thumbnail_generator.htm

It's rough, and I haven't touched it in a long time, and it's pretty simplistic. I wrote it originally to take a folder of screenshots from games I was playing online back then (Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Battlefield 1942, and a few others) and make a "gallery" so I could post them on my old site:
http://www.worldofspack.com/screens/rtcw/
http://www.worldofspack.com/screens/bf1942/
http://www.worldofspack.com/screens/gta3/

Does that help? :)

Hehe, I thought that might be more appealing. If you don't have the part names with the part numbers I might be able to automate grabbing those too, I've spent quite a bit of time recently writing simple "HTML scraper" applications to extract information from web sites.

They were never available in the UK. I got mine on eBay, cost me £12, very reasonable: http://www.ageofstrife.com/gallery/Spack15/if

Tim, check http://www.ageofstrife.com/gallery/AdMechParts

It's outside of the normal user gallery system, and has it's own settings. I've given you permissions to add, delete, and modify images, and to create subalbums if you want to categorise the pics. I can also tweak the layout if you want. Let me know if you can think of anything else.

Wowzas! that is excellent! cheers mate! 8O :D 8)

any parts there you hadnt thought of/have inspired you?

feel free to add any you think of too (will it put newer pics at the beginning, the end, or in "name order"?), and if anybody else thinks of any Adeptus Mechanicus appropriate parts, post the part codes (from the GW Online Store) here, and one of us will add them too!

EDIT: how can i rename parts? (the Orlock Flamer Backpack "8712" should be "9947059905518" - my fault, i had the wrong code saved as the filename)

cheers mate :)

~ Tim
p.s. will non-members be able to view the folder? if so, i may post the link in the AdMech Yahoo Group (if thats OK?)

I ended up ordering the BA Honour Guard techmarine torso and arm today thanks to your pics.

Pics are automatically put at the end, but they can be reordered easily.

You can rename parts by using the Edit Caption option. It won't rename the file itself, but it'll change the part number text that shows with it. If you want to rename the file too, delete it and upload it again with the correct filename ;)

And yes, anybody can view the folder (feel free to post the link), but only you and I can make changes to anything in it.
