Conscripts Mentor Chapter (new list, last entry)

Postby conscriptboris » Tue Sep 30, 2008 11:45 am

Hi,

I was looking help on a 1500pt list for space marines having only played BA before I have in excess of 170 marines that are tactical squads and 65 assault marines and god knows how many rhinos!

So my army has always been Tacticals in rhinos with assault sqs and DC :P

Now when looking at a generic SM list for 5th Ed im struggling to think of anything that could be successful that incs tanks/dreads etc (that arent Baal)

To that end, does anyone have good 1500pt list that they dont mind sharing for my Mentor Chapter! (which would be my first real purpose built army)

Thanks for any help,

conscriptboris

I'll Pm you before the day is out mr boris :)
I'm sure others will reply as well (looks for tappy foot emoticon :) )

10 man tacticals good, 10 man sterngurd in drop pods good.
V cheap tanks and assault marines.(do what they did but cheaper) speeders not so good, scout snipers need a quick comboing to be good- are cheap.
Choose a style of play and an HQ that fits with what you have in mind and then build on that

Well, the questions really are:

1) "What do you want your army to look like?" Do you want an army that's similar in play-style to your BAs, or something completely different?

2) "What units do you like & want to include?" If you like dreads, build a list around them, same goes for anything really...

What codex are you using (I'm assuming 5th ed SM). Give us some answers & we can help...

Definately not like my BA, had enough of that :P

I want to make a generic (5th ED SM) army of 1500pts , TBH im would like to get some vehicles and dreads into the fray (I now have 4 Dreads from my AOBR swaps etc)

So maybe im looking for a mech style SM army, vehicles/dreads with small squads to hold objs etc with the other units massing firepower.

Ive prob answered my own Q on the army i want there but I would like to draw off others much bigger wider knowledge base, ie what squads should have what extras?, would i arm my pred with las or bolters for an all round army?

hope this offers a bit of an idea?

How about (and I've not considered points here) including

1 dread
1 predator
1 whirlwind
razorbacks as well as whirlwinds

Vary the weapons on the vehicles and infantry to have a mix of anti-infantry and anti-tank. Throw in a couple of counter attack or assaulty units.

Ok, that gives us something to work with :)

Right - the Mentors - IIRC are a 'test-bed' chapter - used by the Admech to test weapons & also to develop battle tactics. They are also (again IIRC) composed of a greater number of veterans than normal chapters because they are often sent out at a squad level & attached to other armies.

Things this says to me:
1. Stearnguard/Vanguard (I'd go sternguard as they are less like BA veterans than Vanguard) - representing high veteran numbers
2. Weird guns/vehicles - there's thunderfires, razorbacks (assault cannons!), whirlwinds - they all are cool, have big guns & are new in the codex...
3. Dreadnoughts - Ironclads & normal dreads would be perfect test-beds for new weapon systems as they can fit bulky equipment & extra cooling/stabilising stuff
4. Devestators - if only because they rarely make an appearance & you never see them in BA armies

Am I on the right track?

Dang is there any fluff you can't remeber from X miles from a reference source hammer? :D (I PM'd him a few lists and he liked my forgetech, marine squads and ironclads 1500 list for a flavour of where he might head)
A bit like your lists- lots and lots of tacticals min elites unless dreads (if I've gauged his playing style right :?: )

I like the weird guns theme. Plenty of scope for adding ad mech conversions to all the normal marine stuff to as the army theme.

Cool.

Like the idea, but not a massive fan of barrage weapons, but im thinking now (from KMB an LJ) couple of preds or copuple of dreads and sum vets then razorbacks!

Spot on really, as KMB said he told me the mech list which is alon ghtese lines.

Plenty of scope for adding ad mech conversions to all the normal marine stuff to as the army theme.

I do have a couple of ad mech projects due to my ad mech apocalypse army being built so will have units transferable from there, but im mainly focusing on normal battles.

trying to increase my tactical knowledge of SM that is different to Rhino/jump pack rush and then pray on dice :P

thanks for the help so far, anything else to add please feel free!

Ill get a list knocked up with the ideas for CC soon,

That rings a bell.
Iirc, they were green and silver and had (something like) a "targetting web" that linked the marines, either in a squad or a few squads together.
As I recall, the more marines linked, the higher the strength the bolter shots became.

Concerned now, that I'm talking out of my ovipostor again. :?

High levels of mech stuff (what in the new dex grants shooting re-rolls, for the targetting web???), heard some rumours about deathwatch style bolter rounds/grenade launchers.

It might be an idea to model them all with some kind of comms array (poss like the bikers), maybe some kind of vehicle given over to observation of the techy gadgets with gun cameras to monitor effects etc.

I'll try to find the old dwarf tomorrow (down tw!!!).

The armour is Green and White, though I'm not sure about the targetting web thing? Is that a 3rd Ed fluff addition?

IIRC they were originally the Chapter that tested ALL new Astartes weapons and Tech, so the AdMech connection is reasonably sound.
There isn't whole load of fluff on them, so make some stuff up :D

Ok, fair enough.
The "targetting web" thing is from a dwarf article, entirely from my memory so treat with care.
As to when, I have no idea, sorry.

Techmarines; you should have a couple of those. Ooooh... and servitors to keep the theme going and to wind KMB up.
