Eldar Cheese

Postby wardy » Wed Jun 18, 2008 10:11 am

My brother is about to start an Eldar army and he's young so im giveing words of advice here and there. Theres one problem...I've never played with Eldar before and only managed about 2 games against them with my Noise Marines in the past.

He wants to build something fairly ballanced wih regards to shooty/assaulty units but wants something tactically good. Hes not fussed about the fluff as long as everything on the table gets blown to bits!

I was thinking perhaps a couple of Wraithlords and Wraithguard backing up Dire Avengers as the main troops with an Autarch in amongst Howling Banshees/Striking Scorpions to cause mild mayhem in the assault phase. Transport for a few of these units both to get them where they need to be when they need to be there and to take the focus off the Wraithlords/Wraithguard in the early turns as they plod along up the table. Warlocks in this case would be a must have.

Not over-keen on War-Walkers or Guardians especially due to the option to take Dire Avengers and Wraithlords (can you see what i meant by Eldar Cheese now?!?) but a fairly concentrated force - so a few of each type of unit - to stop the idea of one 'golden unit' being destroyed and the game being lost. Thats something i found with my chaos at any rate.

I hope im making sense. Absolutely any advice would be more than welcome. :)

personally i like Guardians. minimum sized squad with a heavy weapon, sitting back out of LOS and then peeking out to take long range shots. great for VP denial, and holding your own table quarter/deployment zone. and if anything gets too close, they can produce plenty of shots at short range.

my personal favourite weapon in this role is the EML, followed by the Brightlance and Starcannon.

something i really would recommend though are Dire Avengers. with Bladestorm they are awesome.

hope that helps :)

Wraithlord with starcannon=120 points
3 warwalkers with shurican cannons 18 str 6,shots a turn=120 points
Uber freaks go for the warwalkers from what I've seen.
multiple lone vypers with starcannons and shurican cannon(like tornados slightly more vulnerable)
Until 5th ed (when they stop being able to shoot quite so many weapons (so don't buy them)but become
slightly more resilient given the nature of the damage table) even though they lose smf rule.. falcons (with everything but the turbo booster.) for VP denial good shooting base and psychology (of most hated unit by unwashed masses including myself :D )

Wraithlords are still ok,but the price bumps made them a tad cumbersome, in 5th ed with them running into combat they'll start appearing again.
banshees and harlies are always good (if only for hammer and anvil smashing)
Eldrad...
In most big armies comp folks seem to just take 2x3 jetbikes and then take all the lush stuff from the rest of the codex.. but gaurdian hordes can be funny, and pathfinders are brutal (god damn Mr 6 sitting in 4+ (becomes 2+) terrain sniping at me forever and ever and ever)
Have a look at a few template eldar lists and then merge them together to give it your brothers personal touch.
hope something their sounds useful
