need help for 1850 rtt

Postby reaver13 » Wed Jun 25, 2008 4:55 am

There's an upcoming RTT at my local store on august the 18th I think it is. It will be played at 1850pts and I was wanting to get an army going, but clearly need a little direction. I have a few games under my belt, but certainly don't expect to win this tournament, I just want to go and be competitive at least. Anyways, I was looking at BT w/ GK allies mainly because that's all that I have. Can anyone lend me some direction on vehicles I should be considering as well as troop loadouts? I've got about 20 BT initiates waiting to have weaponry added, 1 chaplain, 1 emp champ, and I've got 7 GKTs, and 10 GKs. Obviously I'm a bit short for 1850 pts, which is where you guys come in, so let me know what you think I should be considering! Thanks to all that respond!

I don't play Black Templars or Grey Knights, so I can't give you any first hand advice. So take this for what you will.

I find the strength of the Black Templars to lie in large Crusaders Squads mounted in Land Raider Crusaders. If this tournament is going to use 5th edition rules, Land Raiders will be even more durable than they are currently. If you have a 15-man Crusader squad, including the Emperor's Champion and Chaplain, armed for Close Combat with a Power Fist or Power Sword one one and a Meltagun on another, all loaded into a Crusader, you should have a formidable unit which will be able to hold objectives and have a fair chance against any units trying to take it. Use the remaining squad as mobile fire support. Also, remember that in 5th, Dedicated Transports can be used by other units. So, if you give a Crusader to the remaining 7 Initiates, the 7 GK Terminators will be able to use it. The 10 GKs should probably be on foot, with something like a Land Raider (Heavy Support choice) as a non-Dedicated Transport for them. This will give you three Troops choices for holding objectives. The area where you will still be lacking a bit would be in mobile heavy weapons for hunting units which are trying to hide. You may want to consider Bikes or Land Speeders for this role.

I'd use the GKs as deep strikers, That way you would have a very mobile force, especially as DS will be safer to use than 4th edition.

If you are wanting ideas on what you need, anti tank, so a dreadnaught with lascannons, or a predator or two.

If your setting up for a tourney (and have lots of time to read)
Some links
5th ed only stuff

General BT tactia
http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.ph ... ck+templar

And the biggy (Warseer has 200 page long clubs, which are called tacticas, but are actually just progressive rolling clubs that support specialist sections of 40k through their journey in the world,I'm a big fan of them, The BT one is only 26 pages long, )

If your taking neophytes and initiates in 5th ed its important to understand the stuff I rabbit on about in the 5th ed rules thread here, if its 4th ed its important to double read up on mixed armour rule of the 4th ed rulebook (p76)
I'm sorry I'm rubbish at recommending spending money (it just doesn't come naturally)

The problem I see with this is that having the Grey Knights Teleport makes them a Fast Attack choice, so they will not be able to hold objectives under the fifth edition rules. Then you will be relying upon your two Crusader squads to do so. If they are both destroyed, then you may not be able to win.

My fiance(basically wife, we get married in 9 days!), was kind enough to buy me a predator for my army as a surprise. Now my question is how best to configure it? I was thinking TLLC w/ the heavy bolters, because mainly there are lots of "kids with 'nids" around here. The H bolters looks nice for mopping up incoming genestealers, and with the TLLC I can potentially handle other armies I heavies that I will inevitably face. You guys, however, have played infinitely more games than my whole 5, so I ask you, what have you found to be most effective as a tournament style predator? Thanks!

Congratulations..hope the day goes well.

I have previously had great joy with the build you mention... however it doesn't look so hot in 5th ed,you won't be able to move and fire those heavy bolters you'll have to stand still to fire them, to that end it might be worth seeing how the silt settles around other builds too.. (the tri las won't be hit so badly (having not been as efficent previously).. you'll know whether to set it up aggresively or defensively in 5th ed etc)

If you find matts "what hes got to paint for summer" log (edit linky ).. he uses magnets to make his predators weapons interchangable..its like having your cake and eating it too..(unfortunately in this case I found the bits of cake far too small and fiddly for my clumsy hands)
I'm really am not very good at making other peoples choices for them

No worries there! I'm just looking for playtested input before I assemble my army. I don't have the cash to buy multiple variations of things, so I just want to be fairly certain of my build before setting the glue to it. 5th ed. definately sounds like it'll be a huge drawback to the heavy bolters. It's a shame too, I used a proxy tank of the TLLC/HB build in a game tonight against a friend, and his tyranids felt the full wrath! It was awesome
