BA Company Composition

Postby Cain Tiberius » Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:47 pm

Hi folks.
I am currently in the process of building the 2nd Co. of the Blood Angel chapter.

Fluff states Companies 2-5 consist of 6 Tac Squads, 2 Assault and 2 Devestators. Companies 6 & 7 are all Tactical, Co. 8 is all Assault and Co. 9 is all Devestator as per Codex Astartes.

However, I would like to build my company with the following composition. 4 Tactical Squads, 4 Assault Squads and 2 Devestator Squads. I know people will say to simply make the 3rd and 4th Assault units with an alternate Co. marking.
But, I want to remain within the 2nd Co. with the exception of a few units from the 1st and 10th Co's.

My question is. If I do this, is the big bad fluff monster gonna try and maw me to death?

Nathanael.

Your army, do whatever the hell you want. There is a time and a place for fluff, and you can choose that time and place to suit you.

Seconding Soc.
I want to have the super duper highest tier of fluff but......
Just ignore the company structure.. making a huge BA army without;
librarians, priests, death company, chaplins, sanguinary guard, techmarines and tanks..no bikes (not mentioned in their company structure anywhere)
and then only having sternguard, vanguard, terminators(1st), scouts(10)capping a troop choice to 2 assault marines 1 or 2 devs.. etc etc
Obeying those rules will make for such a dull army on the table I'll pull your arms off if you DO obey them.
:D

Thirded. Get as close to the fluff as makes YOU feel comfortable but at the end of the day it's your army so do what you like. There are no GW fluff police who are going to come round and ban your army :D

And if anyone didn't want to play you because your army didn't match the fluff 100%... that's probably an indication of how that game might go and how "fun" it will be ;)

Thanks for the encouragement folks. The fluff monkeys on B&C are whining already..

But I always thought it wierd that such an Assault themed chapter would have so few Assault based units. Yes, all their vehicles are either 'fast' or can deep strike. But thats just not the same.

I'm thinking is to eventually have 4 Tactical Squads, 2 Devestator Squads, 2 Assault Squads with removable JPs with the option to use transports and 2 full 10 man squads split between bikes, attack bikes and landspeeders.

I was waiting to see if there was any anti-Matt Ward ranting.... I'll do it ;)

Well that's because BA are a Codex-organised Chapter but GW flip-flopped about sticking to that or not and ended up with contradictory garbage..... but don't worry, the BA marines all grow up wanting to be assault marines ;)

Raven Guard should have been the assault-themed Chapter with Assault Squad troops.

Slightly more on topic: paint them how you want :D

(I'm doing an UM 2nd Co, but I'm having 8th Co units so I can justify Troop bikes, so I'll probably paint other relevant models eg Speeders in 8th Co colours to divide the theme more equally - this isn't really relevant though as I'm doing the opposite of you ;))

[My emphasis] That's your issue. B&C is a disasterzone of pure awfulness.

As Matt & others have said, BA are a codex chapter, therefore the 2nd company is set out as you have shown. However, all marines are trained to fight at close quarters with a variety of weapons, and the fluff states that SMs are all issued with a combat knife, therefore giving them 2 CCWs. Take the JPs of assault marines & call them tacticals - just ones that have forgotten their bolt guns...

Or do what you want.

Yeah, I know B&C and bad for my health... Its a habit I am tryin to kick.

I guess I'm not gonna win with the contradictory fluff. I just dont want to do mix in more companies. Think I'll stay with my original idea of the extra units being of other succesor chapter colours.

I recall reading that somewhere that even normal BA are trained to a much higher degree than most other chapters with jump packs, so there's no reason why your extra two assault squads can;t have the red helmets of tacticals, and justify through that?

That's a good idea :)

@Cain: what are you using for company markings? Shoulder trim colour? Anything else?
