Emperor's finest

Postby Socaddict » Mon Dec 13, 2010 2:03 pm

So I just received my copy of everyone's fave commissar in the war torn 41st millennium. Hard back, which is a double edged sword, and I'm wondering about something. Pretty much all Tue other BL hardbacks I've had have included dust jackets. This one doesn't. Can anyone conform or deny if this is correct?

There has been a move in the publishing industry to stop providing dust jackets with hardbacks. It's now cheaper to have the hardcover itself printed, traditionally the hardcover would be cloth covered board which made printing almost impossible and so the dust jacket was included to include the cover artwork. As hardbacks have been going to smooth board covers they can be printed on directly and so no need for dust jackets any more.

There's a little bit about hardbacks coming out without dust jackets earlier this year on the Guardian site here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksbl ... t-required

Here's a blog post from a publisher asking if readers even want dust jackets: http://www.deliriumbooks.com/news/delir ... et-debate/

Maybe 100 years from now hard back books will start having jackets again ...

It's more that its surprising, as sabbat worlds came out only 2 months ago and has a dust jacket, while the newly published book doesn't.

Just strange is all.

If they're going to stop doing jackets they have to start somewhere :)
