The Badab War Part 1

The Badab War Part 1

After insulting Alan Blithe trapped as he was at the Forgeworld designers stand by accusing him of using BOLS 'Badab war' campaign pack as the basis of the latest FW Campaign book and being put firmly in my place (BOLS used Alans Campaign results as the basis of their effort!) - honor dictated that I stand among the overweight and unwashed queuing foreign style (i.e. no order) in order to purchase a copy of this weighty tablet!

Last night I resisted the urge to purge the Fallout 3 Capital Watelands of Mutant and evil doer and settled down to read the background section.

From the very outset you get the impression that the Astral claws fall from grace was less their own fault but were the victim of a massive cover up by the sector administrators and ruling families who were more concerned with their profits and providing their quotas to their masters than outright victory in and around the maelstrom. Lugft Huron (the commander of the Astral Claws and defacto Military leader of all miltary forces in the Maelstrom Sector) on the otherhand starved of Reinforcements and the resorces that he believed would grant the Imperium victory denied it for thousands of years began to bend and outright break rules using the Mealstroms own resources to build up his forces and even going against the dictates of the Codex Astartes.

The high level overview of the first half of the campaign is interspersed with lots of details and post campaign 'highly Classified' documents and accounts mostly taken from the archives of the Ordo Herectus giving a really good feel to the 'story'.

Having finished the back ground session I was obliged to 'hit the rack' as I had to be in the office for 0700 - so a review of the Chapter section will have to wait.

So far though a very good effort - one of the better background books the GW industry has produced.

Me grimlock no care bout fluff.. me grimlock game!..
Do they "fix" CSM warbands codex list? Are the special characters synergistic with their forces(since they caused alot of devout soldiers to follow them), or at least super awesome hard figureheads since they can wield power to rule all the stuff under them (chaos lord, sorceror..fabius..huron..I'm looking at you boys)

KMB: They include various chapter characters Pre-Traitor Huron for example as well as Characters with Chapter tactics that change the Relevant chapter in the same fashion as the special characters in the SM Codex. There is one army list and that is the 'Tyrants Legion'.

It is effectively a renegade Guard Army with a Marine leader as it HQ assorted Marine Squads as Elites/Fast attack and then lots of mixed quality Humans as the rank and file. Tanks are avialable as Heavy support etc.

IN short I think that I might be using this list for my Vraxians instead of the Vraxian one!

As for fixing CSM Warbands - at this stage the Succesionist forces are for all intents and purposes still loyalists (at least in their own eyes) and are not following chaos.

MattG: Already got some ideas mate - talk soon.

It was always one of my beefs with 40k that you are either Imperial or Chaos, with no ground in between.

Yes it does show that the change of the Astral Claws from Staunch Loyalist to Chaos Renegades was a road paved with 'mostly' good intent - and a lot of interference from the various Imperial organisations who could see no further than their own relatively short sited goals.

By the end of the book the Claws are no longer Loyalist (except perhaps in their own minds) but nor are they chaos Renegades - if Anything the Fire Hawks (a Chapter fighting on the 'Loyalist' side) are more 'evil' and carry out acts that can only be described as 'acts of spite' murdering millions of Imperial Citizens who's only crime was to live on a planet under the successionists control.

I really like the book :)

I have two mild disappointments:
1. No Fabius Bile in the Tyrant's Legion
2. They didn't make a special character Huntsman to make Bikes Troops based off the Hounds of Huron Apoc Formation

No Fabius Bile in the Tyrant's Legion?

I was not aware that he was part of it?

Maybe he became involved later on after the Chapter became the Red Corsairs?

It's part of Fabius' fluff, and they kept the experiments with geneseed acceleration in the fluff in IA9.

(They could have as well/instead of made him available to be used in a Codex SM list, but it would have been easier just to suspend the upgrade rule and add his altered marines as an additional unit).

Apparently (so 4chan says) Fabius was kept out as he is mentioned (only in the fluff) of the dark eldar book.. Apparently he was trained by incubi.
Pinch of salt required naturally.

Have read most of the background (a few Chapters to go - Marine Chapters, not book Chapters!).

Generally enjoyed it very much.. minor quibble in that it's a bit Lee Lightner in some parts (I mean, jeez, how many "turning points" were there in the war?!).

Skimmed the rules a couple of times, I like the special characters for the most part, possibly would find them a little under-powered in general play, but within the Badab War setting they feel fine.

I like the Campaign system where you score different points for fighting certain types of game in each round and the timeline specific scenario.

Haven't read the new game-type rules yet.

One slightly random observation: FW appear to have taken on board the Valkyrie Squadron + units from different platoons + Reserve roll issue. The Tyrant's Legion has access to Arvus Lighter Squadrons, and the rules make some sort of specification in regards the issue (the exact rule escapes me at lunch time on a Friday at work!).

WORK HORSE OF THE FLEET rules - the Arvis lighters deploy and operate independently of each other - they are bought as Squadrons for the perposes of Army selection only!

Was this what you were alluding too?
