No, I'll stick him on the list of things I must get round to reading, which probably requires some of the technology used in these books in order to live long enough to actually make a dent in.

Good!
I had never heard of him and only looked him up after reading Lovecrafts mentioning him in his essays. Of his "the house on the bordrlands" he said its was, but for some small sentimentality, a work of the first water (paraphrase from memory).

He seems to be entirely forgotten, which is dreadful and I try to champion him whenever I can.
Perhaps he suffers due to following a few different themes, supernatural/sci-fi horror, traditional sort of "boys own" sea adventure stories and a strange wistful romantacism.
If you pick up the "wrong" type, you will get a very skewed view.

Most of his stuff is short stories, so easily "fit-in" between other stuff.
This is a good taster and not a "canonical" one.
http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/h/hodgson ... index.html

Suggested sci-fi/horror ...
Carnacki the ghost finder anthology (warning, some collections exclude "the hog" which is the climax of the series and is a classic).
The house on the border land novel.
The nightland novel.

The nightland is very heavy going, though, written in dense prose (unlike his other stuff) and weighs in at about 8 million pages. Not the place to start, but the setting alone is astonishing.

Anyway, I hope hodgson you like it!

Single or double deckers?
Collected works are omnibula ( ).

Lovecraft = excellent stuff, though his verbose descriptions have me reaching for the dictionary more often than not.

I have the 3 book omnibus from the late 90s.. and whilst a horrenously unpopular view I think his long stories are overrated. I had a friend who reviews stuff for magazines rave about mountains of madness for months.. I finally pinned him down (inevitable "no I haven't actually read it"- make him read it)-- "oh is that it, a dog barks".. You either completely fall into the steampunk era and fail your san test or you sit there waiting for anything to happen page after non eucliean page of the cylcopean tome..
His middle length stories (the middle book in the 3 book set IIRC) are ninja.. just don't get weighed down before you get to them.
I think I prefer poe. and I definitely prefer swinburne. (although neither of those have the advantage of creating entire deity mythos)

I love a bit of lovecraft, but I have to be in the mood for knowing that nothing is going to happen. But not happen quite beautifully.

I like how he can describe a scene that doesn't need to be described in a way that makes you want to read it. Something that Tolkien never did for me - I think I've only ever read half of lotr as I skip 20 page sections of tedium at a time.

Not sure.

I kind of dread the monster turning up as it will take half a page just to describe it.
Its kind of anti-shakespearean, in that he condenses masses of info, into minimal text amazingly well, but lovecraft agonizes over the details for an age, ending up with that things blogging weird and I've gone mad.

I like that there's a monster, that its weird and that our hero has gone off on one. Just a little less of the verbose (I'm sounding like I don't like him now  ).

Less is more.
I love laurel and hardy, but their "films" are too much plot not enough banananana skins, while their "short" films are geniuos itself.

‘Queerly invincible gesture’ epic
‘Blent’ such an odd contraction I literally had to read it 4 times.

I know it will seem like I was cheating by looking up the author.. but I could tell he was from the colonies (slightly off speech impersonation)..

It was a darn fine read.. beware the shadows of christ mythos mythos :)

Glad you liked it, there's more (go get carnacki the ghost finder, http://www.forgottenfutures.com/game/ff4/carnacki.htm then borderlands).

He did generate his own mythos (the outer monstrosities and all that) and a way to combat the baddies in a pretty hair raising, diy, learn as you go kind of way, which is why the collected stories are omnibulised ( ) in the way they are.

He was english (essex) though spent some time oop north (blackburn) and at sea.
He once upset houdini ( :D :D :D ) and died aged 40 at Ypres in ww1.
That's why in my ravensbrook stories, mathers occasionally reminices about "wipers."

Spread the word, its a tragedy that he's forgotten.

12-thousand sons.. nice pros, we know whats happening everystep of the way though..and its about 80 pages too long..other than that a lovely book.

13- I just remember this book being about the custodes having a row with the sigelette, that its supposed to be assasssins killing everyone everywhere totally skipped my memory. It doesn’t help that this one merged in my head with the audio play which is about the interrogation of an assassin.and possibly the short story called blood games from 10.

14 I must have read this one..this (like 12) is a ‘do anything you want just don’t eat that apple’ thingy. Its all about how the worlds they bring into compliance aren’t brought into compliance the right way (like 12) about how the emperor keeps whupping their arse for their style (like 12) the primarch then 180s..I remember it being all about how emoly fanatical lorgar is about everything.. but don’t remember much more..
(which is the book where 1st chaplin of wordbearers actually steals the anathema (/chaos ssword) from the elder is that this one??)

15 I stopped reading somewhere here.. could be dislike of the legion fluff. Can’t remember.

Started giving them another chance.. as you do.

12 this time I read the last 2 chapters of book 2 and all of book 3.. missing out most of the rememberancer back story so it really was just the fight with the psychic jellyfish the busting of the golden chair and the invasion.. MUCH better.

13 I was right it was all about dorn and the custodes having a big fight!!(ok so there is some other plot about assassins and insest but skrew that it has the siggileeete being spanked by the emperor!!).. This one read really well if you just skim read everything but the speech.. Dialogue holds it together prose is overconuluted (would make a brilliant film).

14.. Or thousand sons take too, rereading still found the books very similar.. difference is that this one is the one that focuses on Argel Tal protecting a human devotee (compared to 1ksons being about the Nicea ruling). I found his story.. for that of a space marine, quite moving.. he’s willing to step into chaos for his primarch.. although a bit like fulgrim it kind of has “and now we’re chaos” switcheroo for everyone else.

15 Propero burns.. was a really hard read..(honest) the first half is a bad acid trip of timey whimey where the guy isn’t the guy but thinks he’s the guy whilst remembering himself under a different name possibly.. the middle bit makes sense as a bard for the wolves he finds a role and keeps a characters and timeline for more than 3 minutes.. then the end surplize buttzecks whilst the pinnacle of the book is a tad annoying. If I read it again.. I skip the entire backstory of the Viking fishing villages and archaeologists getting drunk and start reading about 1/3rd of the way through.

16 Age of darkness.. a bit all over the place in terms of time, but all generally showing ripples of rebellion, the one about one saboteur bringing down a farmstead planet with a broadcast is pretty good (there is a startrek ds9 about changlings on earth nearly identical). And there is an epic one about an obstinate master of a forge takin on the entire heresy for a year just because he’s stubborn..(that one is worth a quick read). Rest were forgettable.
17 Outcast dead.. you guys were right its very good.. I’d say best since 13 or 7.. we get random thunder warrior cult leaders, navigators, psyhkers everywhere, even the odd stoner apothecary.. space marine traitors we can relate to.. an autocratic system , insights into a world just losing its sheen of majesty that includes mentions and throwbacks to other books. Was a worthy read.. first in a while I haven’t just skipped chapters on.

18 Deliverance Lost: ghosts of Terra just started having listened to the prequel audio play, can’t really comment so far other than that its not outcast dead.
