Whats in a name :)

Postby killmaimburn » Sun Sep 27, 2009 9:15 am

Can these names in my list be shuffled around to be clevererer.. :D

Librarian -lucien (as in librarian in charge of the dream library)
Captain- Matheus (from previous fluff)
who leads the bike troop choice
5man bike fist=brawl (led by sergeant Petrus)
4man bike shooty death= conflict

Dreadnought=Ruckus
Droppodded by= XXIV (what was the name of the fireball..gerry anderson?)

Tactical squad
5man flamer combi flamer with libby with ap3 flamer= squad Skirmish (need name for sergeant with combi flamer who hangs out with librarian..see end for some vague ideas)
5 man las= errrrrm??(..something about sniping or hurling abuse any ideas?)

Vinidcator=scuffle
Predator=Quarrel
Attack bikes=Scythe (does that stand out too much as breaking the pattern? It suits its battlefield role)
Single speeder who DSs late=Retort
2 speeders who sometimes start on sometimes DS and kill lots=Duel.

Although the names sound similar I've actually got dutch portuegese and french in there..so for the flamer sergeant it doens't really matter on source (although latinized would be appropriate)I'm struggling because "smokey" is easy "Uriel" Hebrew for fire..is fairly good..any ideas? (model wise he's my doctor fabius model with combi bolter and sack of knives)
Anyone shuffle them to make better sounds, I think Ruckus the dreadnought and the double entendre of Duel are fixed.. but everything else is up for swappage to you linguphiles.
Just thought this might be a fun one :D

This is normally where I start my naming systems for Space Marines:

http://www.behindthename.com/usage.php

Pick a flavour (generally from ancient greek/latin on the bottom right) and trawl through until I find something I like (either the name, or the description). Then I often 40k-ify it by making it more cod-latin.

Hope that helps.

If you have quarrel and skirmish, maybe you could go for "mild disagreement" or "blown out of all proportion."

How can there be a petrous without a Calx/Calculus?
Or for that matter, a Forfex or Membrana?

Not to mention...Caedo Trunco ardeo.

My translator comes up with...Interimo Trunco Exussum :wink:

Interestingly enough, you translate to ruffian quattuor, meaning that ruffian is older than I thought! 8O

for these, how about "sledging"/"Sledge" (that's smacktalk used by either side in Cricket, which is a Gentleman's game played by 'players' [there are no gentlemen in this game since it went pro.]).

Warnie (Shane Warne, mediocre spin-bowler for Australia) was (in)famous for it.
