1500 pts Doubles Tournament. 9/8/08

Postby AdrianG » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:12 pm

Hope this isn't too much hard work to read, not the most eloquent person in the world :P

Took part in my first GW Tournament on Saturday
The basic rules were that the 2 players created a 750pt army list each and combined them into one force.

Scoring for the games was worked out as 13 points for a win, 10 points for a draw and 7 points for a loss.
Other points would be awarded during the day for
Best Painted Army 15 points up for grabs
Sportsmanship (Team) 5 Points
Best Painted Army (Players Vote) 5 Points

My friend and me went for a Space Wolf/Crimson Fist combo, which was a bit of a risk seeing as he had not played SM before 8O

His part of the list had (roughly)
1 Captain + 4 marines in Terminator Armour
1 Dreadnought with a TL Las-Cannon, Dreadnought CCW and Heavy Flamer.
1 Dreadnought with an Assault Cannon Dreadnought CCW and Heavy Flamer
1 Marine squad 1 Sergeant with Bolter and CCW and 4 Marines with Bolters
1 Marine squad 1 Sergeant with Bolter and Power Fist 1 Marine with Heavy Plasma Cannon and 3 Marines with Bolters

We hoped we would have enough firepower and scoring units to get us through the tourney

Arrived at local GW store at 9:30 for list checking, and to get the draw for the games.
There was supposed to be 8 teams of 2 however, we had some no-shows, and it left us with 7 teams :/
A somewhat complicated draw process later, we were ready to battle.

Our first opponents had a combined Eldar/Tau list which included an Avatar 8O.
The Mission was Annihilation, so it was kill as many of them as possible.
The deployment was Spearhead (Table Quarters)
We had 2 Hours to complete the game
We got Set-up and 1st turn.
The game got off to a good start for us as we moved up the table and engaged our enemy, killing a Tau Broadside and peppering several infantry units. 1KP to us.
Their return fire was ineffective and we didn't lose a single marine to the Xenos !
Turn 2 was a mixed bag, as we continued to try and close with the enemy.
I managed to put a wound on the Avatar and whittle a couple of Tau units down a bit. No KP for us.
Their return fire was more successful, killing 3 Terminators and shredding on of my Grey Hunter Packs. The Avatar tried to kill my Venerable Dreadnought, however the "Hard to Kill" special rule saved the day- along with the extra armour :)

We were having some "problems" with our opponents by this point, as they were taking a long time to do their move and fire phases. Up to turn 3 had taken over an hour and a half to complete :(

Turn3 was where it all went horribly wrong. Despite putting 2 more wounds on the Avatar, we failed to kill a single enemy unit and therefore no KP for us. The return fire was devastating. The Avatar assulted the Venerable Dreadnought ripping an arm off it, and the Blood Claws plus 2 Grey Hunter packs died in a hail of fire.
An Eldar tank killed off my second dreadnought, which left me with virtually nothing left to fight with. my friend did not fare much better, his Terminators were whittled down to just the Captain and his troops had suffered 50 per cent casualties.

At this point the slowness of our opponents bit, as we started turn 4, we ran out of time.
The result was not in question however and we were soundly thrashed.

Points:7

There was a short break at this point (lunch) and the store staff judged the armies for painting/theme/WYSIWYG.
Points for us: 6.
Seems I'd forgotten to take smoke launcher off one dread and not put CCW's on the Grey Hunters.
A lesson learnt here was that creative basing for individual squads is not the way to go in tourneys :/
We also voted for our favourite painted armies.

Game 2 was against a Steel Legion/Praetorian Guard army (including a Leman Russ Demolisher)
The mission was Capture and Control and deployment was Pitched Battle.

We got to set up 1st and despite an attempted "seize the initiative", got first turn.
Because of the mission, the Guard set up right on the back edge of their deployment zone, which meant we had a hard slog getting to them :(
Dutifully we set off down the table to get to grips with our enemies and suffered 3 turns of demoralising fire with very little of our weapons able to do any effective damage to them. Most especially annoying was the constant Mortar Fire from 2 squads set up on both the left and right sides of the opponents deployment zone. Their mission it seemed, was to destroy the 2 Marine squads holding our objective.

Turn 4 started with us finally getting into a half decent position on the table and as a result we began to start dishing out some payback.
A unit of Rattling Snipers were chewed up an routed off the table and 3 squads of Steel Legion felt the full fury of the Space Wolves but did not break to their credit. On our right flank, 2 squads of Praetorian Guard moved towards us in the hope of getting to out objective marker.
They didn't reckon on the Crimson Fists getting to them first.

Turn 5 saw what was left of my Blood Claws getting to grips with the Steel Legion in Cc however they didn't kill enough of the guard and remained locked in combat for the rest of the game.
I finally managed to get my Grey Hunters into range -and along with the Crimson Fists Terminators - proceeded to make them pay for the constant shelling we had suffered.
I also managed to immobilise the Demolisher, however it still caused us huge problems.
We also managed to get the guard squad holding their objective down to one man, giving us a faint hope of victory.
The Crimson Fists Dreadnought on the right engaged 1 squad of Praetorian Guard with it's Heavy Flamer, wiping out the entire squad of 10 in one go!
The Crimson Fist Marines engaged the other Praetorian squad in CC meeting with mixed success.

Turn 6 continued where we left off. I continued to close the range to the Steel Legion units plus continuing to try and remove the last of the squad holding the objective. If we could get a contested result, we'd win the game.
Our firing was effective again, putting in plenty of hits, but somehow our opponents managed to get enough saving rolls to prevent the squads closest to their objective marker from dying or running away.
The return fire saw one of my dreadnoughts getting blown up with the resulting explosion killing 2 of my Grey Hunters. Their Mortar fire continued to whittle down our marines holding at the back. There were now only 3 left within 3 inches of the objective. We held it still, but only just.
Both my friend and me were praying for Turn 7, as we knew we could win with the extra turn.
However it was not to be and the game ended as a draw.
Points: 10

With one less team being present, it had been decided that 3 teams would have to not play and get a draw result so that everyone could have a chance at scoring points.
We decided to volunteer ourselves as one of those teams and therefore our 3rd game result gave us 10 points.

Once the dust had settled and the scores were calculated, we found ourselves in 6th place :)
Better than coming last I suppose.
It was quite a fun day, and I learnt a lot about tourney's and how to set up a painted army. It was also a good to learn new rules in a properly competitive atmosphere.

Seems I'd [...] not put CCW's on the Grey Hunters.

ouch so irrelevant wargear (as their weren't 2 and it wasn't a BP) was counted as mandatory, tough break.
Nice to see you had something to do over the weekend too :D

Yeah it was a bit of a downer finding out stuff like that counted.
I'd spent 2 weeks desperately getting my head round the task of having them all painted for the tourney, however a lesson learnt, no fancy shmancy bases from now on.
Plain old green flock it is :P

6th place was technically second from bottom, however I'm not complaining too loudly, maybe in the next one I'll climb to 5th! LOL

I wasn't quite clear on that bit, was it that the size was different from a standard dreadnought base- or that they thought you'd raised your models?
Ljundhammers models are based on slabs of slate (ontop of normal circular bases) and that was GT fine and looked darned good (strange soft score scumminess- next time it will be that you used the wrong shades of blue  )
BTW why the name change?

If you look in the photo you'll see one squad with a green rim on their base, another on "Industrial Grid".

The 2 Dreadnoughts I thought would be okay because they were individual units. I suspect that they had to be based the same as the rest of the army regardless :(

The name change.... Uniformity in all forums, Comrade KMB.
It's the same name as I use in Dakka Dakka and on Bolter & Chainsword.
Besides, Adrian IS my name ... I think 8O

I wasn't quite clear on that bit,

i took it to mean that since the bases on the front squad (metal panels/mesh etc) dont match the rest of the army (green flock), the force lost points for lacking a unified feel. or something.

Basically yes, 2 squads had noticeable differences in their bases and the dreadnoughts were "supposed" to be based exactly as the rest of the army.

Even with those little "Nit picks", it is still a very nice looking army. Plus if you came first in your first tournament, you would have nothing to strive for, you can only improve now instead of dropping down.
