30,000pts apocalypse - with a difference!

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 6:48 pm

Recently a few club members and I banded together to play a game of Apocalypse. The game involved Myself (Herne) and Emperor on the side of the Guard and Smurfy and Matt on the side of the Ultramarines.

We are all fans of the Horus Heresy books and have been reading about fleet movements and drop pods assaults for about 6 motnths now - and one of our member has taken it upon himself to collect as much of the Ultramarines chapter as he can get his mits on. Coupling all this with the fact that we were all bored of the usual apocalypse 'capture the 6 objectives' mission we thought we'd spice it up. First of all we decided to play the game along a narrative thread and give out ultramarine player the ideal mission for any marine commander.

Imagine pulling into orbit around a rebel planet that you've been sent to quell. The local guard commander has been swayed toward the side of chaos, and must be punished. As the marines arrive in orbit, orbital scans show the guard digging in and making defences. The marine player then gets to choose the objectives and decide where he will press his assault. The board looked like this
Image

The 4 objectives on the lower board were randonly selected - the marine players having to take 2 of the objectives unknown to the guard players. The main objective was protected by a power field. It provided a 2+ inv save and was impossible to enter by the marines. There were two armour 13 shield generators just at the corners of the central board which when knocked out reduced the effectiveness of the shield with the first one (3+ inv and enterable) followed by total shield loss on the destruction of the 2nd generator.

To win the game the marine players needed to take the two secret objectives and kill the imperial guard commander in the main objective. The guard players had to survive and break the assault. To add insult to injury the guard had captured Tigurus who was being held in a mountain fortress behind the main objective - enterable only by a thin bridge which was held by guard. Obviously deepstriking into this area was possible and so deepstrikes had to aim for the bridge ad fight their way across.

We also added a convent and a tank factory to the mix for a bit of variety. Err - did we mention the suprise in the tank factory....

The tank factory

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 6:56 pm

So on storm the marines in turn 1 from their bottom board edge - Thunderhawk fully laden with marines ready to kick butt. There in the corner is the tank factory - a simple armour 13 - glance to destroy building represented by the ubiquitous photocopier paper box. Destroying it would prevent the imperial guard getting a re-roll on all it's ordnance. Consequently this was a highly desirable target.
Image
So on comes the thunderhawk with it's nasty D weapon - ooooh - you guard are for it.
Image
It shoots, it scores! It cracks the tank factory open! Err - what's that inside it?
Image

Image
Oh - It's a Titan - did we forget to mention we'd paid for that inour 7500pts?
Err - the next pics missing - I had to duck a flying chair when I tried to get a picture of smurfys face!!!!

First apocalyptic explosion

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:05 pm

The ultramarines then decided to assault the titan with loads and loads of terminators - it's here that we learnt just how nasty titans are in an assault - using the gargantuan creatures combat rules it then proceeded to stomp the termies for 2 turns before getting destroyed by a landraider.
Here the termies strike:
Image
Here the Landraider that finally bought it down - Ironic really - it was my DA raider on loan rather than an actual ultramarine vehicle!
Image

As one might imagine - it went apocalyptic on the explosion chart. Here's what was there before:
Image
And after - ouch!
Image

This was the first of what turned out to be several apocalyptic blasts this game! It was a blow for the guard - but revenge was sweet - check the next post!

Baneblade blasts

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:14 pm

In retaliation for the titan 3 Herne superheavies rolled on - two baneblades and a stormblade. They took a toll on the marines - particualrly the bikes - Heres the bikes before.....

It should be noted that the ultramarines with all their Guilliman style tactical accument decided on the most effective combat formation to aid ......

Stomblade go pop

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:20 pm

Afterwards the marines took out both shields and the main objective - deepstriking as many units on it as possible the ultramarines took the fight into the heart of the central objective. It was then that the next super-blast came from the apocalyptic explosion of the stormblade. This little fella called down the straw that broke the camels back:
Image
Here is the camel before the blast...... surrounded by guard squads and by deepstiking marines.....
Image
and here's what's left afterwards.....

Shortly afterwards the marines pressed the fight with marneus calgar, his honour guard and the masters of the chapter arriving dead centre of the main objective.

marneus and mates

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:27 pm

Marneus and his unit managed a pinpoint deepstrike - again in a borrowed DA drop pod - there were over 20 deepstriking drop pods in this game! = we nearly ran out of planpots!
Image
Unfortunately for Marneus and mates they arrived right in front of the detachment of Hellhounds:
Image
who had a beautiful line of sight:
Image
Said marines were beautifully bunched -
Image
Together with plasma shots from the guard high command there were over 40 wounds put on the unit. Can you guess at the casualties? Well lets do the maths - saving on a 1+ means only a 16.5%chance of wounding - so 16.5% of 40 should mean approximately 6 to 7 victims. That's right - he failed on....... none. Yes - None - the beardy git made every single save!!!! 8O

The game finished soon after - The marines killed the defending squad on the lower floor of the building, but when they pressed their assault for the upper floor they found that only 1 marine was in range of assault. He rolled his terrain dice and came up with a double 1, not allowing him opportunity to reach the top floor - 15000pts and winning or losing came down to that final dice roll!

Overall the game was excellent - many points were used and the storyline and objectives made the game all the more fun. Many thanks to Emperor, Matt and Smurfy for the game. Here's to the next one!

Awesome in scope and retelling.
I liked the narrative plot your objectives gave, really captured the spirit.
Did you use /do you use assets? How?

Obj assets

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:46 pm

We chose not to use assets other than those that came with the detachment charts from the books. That meant the guard had relatively few, while the marines, with their masters of the chapter, had quite a few barrages etc. Oddly this didn't overbalance the game at all.

Dusty Titan

Postby Herne » Wed Feb 25, 2009 10:55 pm

Well there's two reasons for that - firstly having a tank factory fall apart around your ears tends to leave you quite a lot of dust on your shoulders.
The second reason is that Spack was kind enough to lend us the Titan - and he never dusts his house!!!!

(Either that or he just sits in a little room dremmeling resin all day without a vac or dust sheets.) :D

My wife dusts the house, but avoids the PC/gaming room. And the Titan had spent quite a bit of time sat on a high shelf, and got put straight into a box when it was borrowed. Besides, it's Chaos - it's not like they'd have a Titan-wash at the local filling station :P

I dunno - can you imagine all those daemonettes washing your windscreen........

Besides - it's not really dust - it's icing sugar. We thought if we sugar coated it he'd be able to accept it better. :D

He didn't!
