A bridge too near

Postby mattjgilbert » Wed Jun 16, 2010 3:04 pm

Table set-up as per this thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4465. Mission is explained there too.
I’ll not break down the army selections as the text is long enough as it is – you’ll get a feel for it as you read.
Two objectives were placed on each side in addition to the bridge objectives.

The Random sides turned out to be:
Alex (Marines: Storm Riders), Jon (Space Wolves) and Andy (Space Wolves) [AAJ]
Vs
Matt (Ultramarines), Martyn (Dark Eldar) and spare army (Daemons) [MM]

Deployment
MM deployed first with bulk of the DE in the middle (including wytches, grotesques, warriors and a Talos). Scouts, speeder and whirlwind (parked on an objective) in the middle/right and the Landraider going for the bridge on the MM left.

Jon’s Wolves go middle and left on their side, Andy most in transports on the right lead by Ragnar and Alex splits his force against the 2 Bridges.
Image
Image

MM go first.

MM Turn 1
Get the daemons they wanted. Soul Grinder lands on right but is immobilised. Flamers scatter but still near enough to Alex’s terminators and chaplain. Speeder moves out of LOS of Long Fangs. DE move up the table and the LR trundles onto the bridge.

The Masque uses Pavane to group up a pack of Grey Hunters and the SG Phlegms them killing 9! The LR stops a rhino and razorback from shooting. The flamers are pants and only kill 2 terminators and wound the chaplain. The Whirlwind kills a terminator.

AAJ Turn 1
Drop pod carrying dreadnought arrives behind DE wytches and grotesques in the middle – it kills 9 wytches and another is host by the storm bolter in the drop pod. 2nd squad of grey hunters move up towards soul grinder and assault it. Rhinos move up to bridge and make a wall. The blood claws get out to shoot the flamers but fail. Long Fangs fire 4 missiles on the soul grinder but do nothing. Terminators luckily kill the Masque and over the other side of the table kill a single tzeentch flamer. Jon’s runepriest uses JotWW against the Talos and kills it and another wytch who then run.

The terminators charge the flamers but lose the combat 2 to 1! The soul grinder fails to kill and grey hunters but loses a DCCW itself.
Image

MM Turn 2
Nurglings land near the soul grinder. Plague bearers and Daemonettes land in the middle at the back on AAJ’s side. Grotesques move onto the bridge and charge some terminators but the result is a draw. DE warriors on the left move across the river and assault the terminators fighting the flamers. The chaplain dies as does 1 DE warrior = draw.
Speeder moves closer to Long Fangs but still out of LOS. The scout missile launcher takes the DDCW/Flamer off the dreadnought. Land raider only manages to remove a storm bolter of a rhino and the whirlwind does nothing. Scouts fail cover roll to assault the greyhunters attacking the soulgrinder but the SG manages to kill a GH and win the combat and the GHs run.

Pants turn and rubbish dice for MM

AAJ Turn 2
Grey hunters rally and move back towards the soul grinder. Blood claws shoot up the daemonettes killing 4 but failing the roll to charge them. Skyclaws move towards daemonettes. Rhino’s move to block the landraider on the bridge. Blood claws and grey hunters from the rhinos move towards the flamer combat. Razorback lascannon fails to do anything to the landraider. Dreadnought shoots assault cannon at scouts, does nothing, charges and gets a draw. The Long fangs kill the soul grinder and the rune priest stops the speeder from shooting.

A missile launcher from a tactical squad takes the multi-melta off the landraider. The grey hunters, with the soul grinder gone, shoot then charge the nurglings and speeder: Most of the nurglings are killed.

Scouts, blood claws and grey hunters all charge into the flamer combat and all of MMs models are wiped out. The lone grey hunter (wulfen) who didn’t get killed by phlegm joins the combat with the grotesques on the bridge; the grotesques lose but hold. Daemonnetes are rubbish in combat and die to a girl with no return damage. Marines and plague bearers in the crater/objective on the edge of AAJ’s side fight a draw.

MM Turn 3
Fleshounds arrive near bridge in the middle. Landraider moves off bridge, down river and terminators get out: the librarian lines up to use Avenger to wipe out a swathe of marines but rolls double 6 and take s PotW wound. Speeder retreats behind woods. Scouts move towards runepriest but shooting fails totally. DE warriors on hill fail to do any damage to anything as does the whirlwind.

The scouts and the dreadnought draw their combat while the nurglings are destroyed. The terminator assault squad charges and kills all the scouts and a unit of bloodclaws but the librarian dies in return. Marines and plague bearers draw again. DE Archon has joined the fight with the grotesques on the bridge but fails to kill anything. The Des are the losing side but hold again.

AAJ Turn 3
3 Skyclaws die to dangerous terrain rolls and shoot one hound dead. Marines in the corner move up to shoot the assault terminators – a thunder hammer marine dies to bolter fire. Bloodclaws move back towards the assault terminators covered by a rhino. Rhino on the bridge tries to move but gets immobilised. The runepriest kills a hound and the drop-pod kills 2 more. The last hounds are killed by the Long Fangs. The grey hunters who killed the nurglings shoot then charge the scouts killing them all. The landraider ignores a penetrating hit from the razorback (good old chronous). The scouts shake the dreadnought in combat while 2 plague bearers die. The DEs on the bridge lose combat again but hold again by rolling a double 1. Ragnar charges in to the assault terminators but between him and the rest of his squad only kill 2 terminators. Ragnar takes 2 wounds in return so it’s a draw.

MM Turn 4
Speeder move 24” across table onto hill. Landraider moves to hill for a tank shock and a tactical squad runs. The landraider then immobilises the razorback. DE warriors fail to kill and skyclaws as does the whirlwind. The plague bearers/marines and scouts/dreadnought combats are again draws. The grotesques still hold on the bridge. Ragnar dies but so to the remaining assault terminators.
Image
Image

AAJ Turn 4
Tactical squad run off the table as the landradier is within 6”. Bloodclaws embark on rhino and move across river towards an objective. Skyclaws move to assault DE warriors on the hill. The runepriest takes a PotW wound while the Long Fangs fail to hurt the speeder. Likewise, the Landraider shrugs off everything fired at it. The rhino on the bridge repairs itself.

Plague bearers win combat killing 2 marines but the marines hold. Scouts and dreadnought draw again. Grotesques killed to sweeping advance. Bloodclaws charge the landraider hoping for a powerfist hit but do nothing. The DE kill 2 skyclaws in combat but 5 DE are killed in return and they run off the table.
Image
Image

MM Turn 5
Landraider turns on the spot, kills 2 marines and takes the lascannon off the razorback. The whirlwind does nothing while the landspeeder kills two skyclaws including the wulfen. The plague bearers/marines and scouts/dreadnought combats are again draws.
Image
Image

AAJ Turn 5
Bloodclaws in the rhino move onto the objective while the grey hunters move towards the drop pod. The terminators on the bridge, having gotten free from the grotesques fire an assault cannon at the speeder, blowing it up and killing the skyclaw with the powerfist in the resulting explosion. The runepriest fails to hit the whirlwind but the Long Fangs immobilise it. The landraider avoids any damage while the plague bearers stifle a yawn as they draw again. IN other news, 2 scouts die but take the assault cannon arm off the dreadnought. They lose the combat but hold.
Image

MM Turn 6
Landraider turns and tank shocks the blood claws AND rams the rhino on the bridge but with no effect. It then shoots it an wrecks it. The whirlwind fails to kill the runepriest. The plague bearers finally dislodge the marines from the objective in the crater. The skyclaws stop the whirlwind shooting and the scouts fighting the dreadnought finally all die.
Image
Image
Image

AAJ Turn 6
The Plague bearers go to ground but 2 are killed by JotWW from the runepriest. The grey hunters wreck the whirlwind with a meltagun. The lone wulfen fails to charge the prone plague bearers and the bloodclaws and sole terminator on the far bridge fail to hurt the landraider.

Final scores:
AAJ = 10 Mission Points (1 bridge, 2 opponent objectives, 1 own objective)
MM = 0 mission points (contesting bridge and 1 opponent objective)

Conclusions
A very fun game if a bit one sided! Having dark elder with no armour to speak of and a weak daemon spare army on one side versus 3 marine armies meant it was always going to be an uphill struggle. Having some appalling rounds of dice rolling didn’t help at all!

The only real bright spots for MM were the assault terminators who must have used up the side's entire good luck with dice based on the number of saves they made – and they killed Ragnar too which helped soften the blow of defeat :)

Great report and great game Matt!
That plus fantastic scenery and well painted models, very cool!
One question, on AAJ turn 1 you said the drop pod arrived with the dreadnought, the dread killed 9 wytches and the stormbolter killed another.
How was the drop pod allowed to fire its stormbolter on the turn it arrived? It counts as moving at cruising speed when it arrives so shouldn't be allowed to fire any weapons, no?
But again, was a very good read, looks like you all had a lot of fun playing it!

probably - but that's what it says in my notes and turn 1 was about 4 weeks ago now so I can't remember if that's true or not!

Not that it mattered as the wytches were fried anyway :)

Did you figure out how to get an overhead picture of the gameboard yet?

nope - not going to be possible in a single shot. I'll either have to try piecing one together or taking individual shots of all the scenery pieces :llorar

Shame! If you had access to a wide angle lens and could somehow mount the camera on the ceiling and trigger it by remote control, but that might be more trouble than it's worth.
Battle chronicler has a pretty in depth tutorial on how to photograph and inport your own terrain. Be a bit of work, but you'd only have to do it the once, then you would have your own library of your terrain pieces!

Don't worry - I'd already read the stuff on creating terrain components and have spent the evening creating some. They are bloody fantastic even if I do say so myself!

Mind you I've got bucket loads to create...

It's your own darn fault! :P
If you weren't so prolific at terrain building, you wouldn't have so much to do!
On a serious note, I'm sure they look fantastic judging by the pictures you post here of them.
Once you have the terrain, you can place it on a plain table in battle chronicler. Being able to import the picture of the table as a whole just saves a few steps.
You'll have to make your components available for download!
BTW, I'm trying to make a 'smoke' marker. Any ideas? (either you or Phil)

One step ahead of you mate. The table background is already done ;) I was thinking about making them into an import set. Really it would be nice to group them in some other way than the "Extended" group - maybe I'll ask the author unless there's an option I missed?

I'll think about the smoke.
