me v spack 1000 pts

Postby da_grot » Wed Sep 06, 2006 12:42 am

Last week while on a trip with some mates (including spack) to warhammer world, me and spack decided we would have a good old game of 40k.

i was using my ultramarines first use in a long time and spak was using his iron warriors.

I had a:
commander with storm bolter and lightning claw

6 vetarns with closecomabt weapons, powersword and powerfist

5 terminators with 1 assult cannon and cyclne launcher

3 7 man tactcial suads with 1 with a plasma gun, other with melta gun last one with plasma guna dn heavy bolter

6 devastors with 3 missile launcher.

cant renember in detail what spack had no doubt he wil fill us in :D

Basically all was goin good with me killin off his dreadnought after a bad blood thirst roll let me shoot it, and making a couple of his squads run of the board.

until his deamon prince and his 3 remaining raptors made it to close combat killing the terminators and a sqad of marines. I started to get worried until i killed his deamon prince with a bolter, he wsnt happy.

After that i finished him off and claimed table quarters :)

Yeah, it was a fun game. That Blood Rage roll on the Dreadnought was a pita, considering it was supposed to sit tight and pop off lascannon shots. That raptor dying to a failed terrain test when landing in the trees didn't help either. Or that damn 1 on the DP save against that bolter :P

Anyway, for comparison here was my list:

Lord w/Stature, Dreadaxe, ccw, Armour, and Aura.

2 x Obliterators

Marines, 4 bolters + lascannon

Marines, 4 bolters + heavy bolter

Marines, 5 bp+ccw

Devastators: 2 bolters, 1 missile, 2 autocannons

Dreadnought w/TL Lascannon and ccw/storm bolter

At least I managed to deep strike one obliterator without it scattering to a quick death, and he prevented a falling back marine unit from regrouping so they ran off the table. The other obliterator landed just within 1" of a marine squad, and vanished into the ether.

Top tip: remember the mission rules. I completely forgot it was a table quarters holding mission, and I was gunning for the enemy units. If I'd remembered to take quarters I might have had a few more men left on turn 6, but I'm pretty sure I'd have still lost :?

When I rate people's lists I often put down the set up on deep striking terminators (I guess that'd go for Oblits too), for the usual reasons: Scatter & Reserve Rolls.

But I often forget mission like Table Quarters and Recon, for which deep striking is great.

Bummer on the scatter, Spack.

I really need to reconsider DSing. The reason why:

I really was hampered by a 2 LC, 2 ML dev crew last night. They had a great fire lane, LoS, a tall 'ruin' for protection, and too much Size 1 difficult terrain in front of them for my boys to foot slog through to reach and assault them.

I wish-Iwish, I'd DSed my 6 man terminator squad (2 ACs), right behind them, in their ruined building shelter.

Yeah, the termies would probably have ultimately died, but they'd sure as heck take the devastator squad with them, and thus remove some deadly guns that held up my dreadnoughts on the far side of the table.

I guess it's not good to turn a blind eye to even the smallest part of 40k's options, because there's a really good use for even the lame ones, someplace, in some game.

I'm not on the Deep Strike Bandwagon, but I think I'll stop criticizing it so much.
