My First 5th ed Game!

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:24 am

Hey all :)

just got in from my first games night since the release of 5th ed. i spent the first part of the night watching a 1500 pts battle (Eldar vs SoB), discussing rules, looking things up, and generally cheering on both sides.

the game finished with an hour to go before closing time, so i managed to get in a quick 5th ed CP - Plague Zombies vs SoB. we used CP restrictions @ 400pts, played Annihilation with 12" deployment zones and used the 5th ed roll-off process for deployment/first turn. the SoB consisted of 1 squad of sisters (in a Rhino) and 1 smaller squad of Celestians (in an Immolator). i took my standard Plague Zombie force.

the game ended as a Win to the Plague Zombies:
- i chased off both squads and destroyed the Immolator, scoring 3 KPs
- the SoB wiped out one pack of Zombies and killed the Sludge Beast, earning 2 KPs (all in the first couple of turns!).

i managed to hide the last member of Zombie pack #1 behind the Wreck, denying my opponent the chance of a Draw. the game ended on Turn 5, with the surviving Rhino being persued by about 10 Zombies. it was very fast and furious, and quite bloody. on more than one occasion i felt the need to bellow "BRAAAAINSSS!" in my best Zombie voice.

things i noticed:
- i felt the sting of FNP being ignored by AP1 weapons (Melta Guns)
- i enjoyed Running (especially to counter bad scatter rolls when arriving)
- getting to hit Vehicles in their own turn was very nice
- double attacks when charging compared to 4th ed SAP
- re-roll to wound w/Poison
- gentler DS rules made me more daring, even though they didnt actually come into effect
- Sweeping Advances not being denied due to a lack of B2B was handy
- being able to auto-pass Difficult Terrain rolls when charging from 1" away was a godsend (under 4th you would fail on a double1 as you could end your move within 1")
- hitting Rear Armour on Vehicles in CC meant i actually stood a chance against his tanks (and he couldnt Tank Shock me with impunity)

rules we didnt use:
since all the fighting took place in the far corner of the SoB DZ (seriously, we used like 1 sq foot of the table :P), we didnt need to use the new LOS rules, or the improved Cover Saves/screening rules. we didnt use the Multiple Templates or Going to Ground rules either, and i never DS'd into Difficult Terrain.

it was a fun game and the evening has made me look forward to properly starting 5th ed. i wouldnt call it an improvement yet, but it was a nice change. the wording in the rulebook was noticably tightened up, which was nice (we would look specific things up, and they would actually be covered in the rules). thankfully there were no "WTF" moments, and no-one felt robbed by the KP rules.

hopefully i will be able to get in another 5th ed game in a couple of weeks (in the meanwhile i will continue to play 4th at home).

cheers :)

~ Tim

Told you so :P You don't even have to take up one of the proper tables at GW just use the chess table in bugmans and if you scatter off it have something walk on turn3 instead
Barely even lurking..

I also had my first 5ed rules game lastnight! :D

1500pts Marines vs Tau, with me being marines. There were three objectives to capture.

Game ended end of turn five (as it was 22:30 and we needed to go) with me holding one objective and my opponent 0. However I suspect in the next turn he would have taken the other two objectives as most of my force had been wiped out!

Biggest shock was the wound wrapping, and we used the laser sights quite a lot!

Overall I really enjoyed the changes and the objectives brought a great dimension to the game.

Top stuff

well when we play at home we use at least 1/2 - 2/3 of the board. its just the SoB player didnt spread out: he deployed both units in their transports, next to each other, in the corner of his DZ. he then moved them both forward, and i DS'd all around him (one unit behind, one in front, and one to the side). also, because he used short ranged weapons (H.Flamers, Meltas, Rapid Fire Bolters), he didnt zoom off, and because he was encircled he couldnt back away - so we just got stuck in.

against Kate's Eldar its a lot different: she spreads out to create more DS dead-zones, and has longer range weapons allowing her units to support eachother from greater distances. she also has fast units that run rings around the Zombies, trying to keep their distance. usually by turn 2 things have moved into the middle of the board, with push and pull in every direction.

so :P

cheers ;)

Sounds like a good game!
Sadly, my first game of 5th will likely be at the meet up. I expect many 'whoops, can't do that anymore' moments!

2 different tacticians fielding 2 different armies! Sound like you enjoyed the new rules as well. I can't wait for the batreps from the meetup. Will have a nice mix of 4th and 5th editions, CP and 1500 point games, and maybe an apocalypse report. Really wish I could be there! :crybaby2

Can't you hitch a ride with ben "the mule" ben?

Even as it stands, he's going to need a tardis, there must be more room!

It may go against your law enforcement background, but it would be good to see you, chronos magus/half past four saw the lady in half. :D

Ben's probably got enough "baggage" to carry!

You'd be surprised how much you can stuff into your socks and underwear for a trip! (Sorry for the bad mental picture :tongue1 )

Thank you! One day I would like to take my family for a trip "across the pond". Never know what might happen in a future meetup!
