Necron vs Marine modified kill team battle

Postby timewizard » Sun Mar 04, 2012 3:45 am

Rather unusual battle developed in the haunts of the Time Wizard this past evening.
Two players decided to throw down some dice in a friendly game.
However, they were rather new to the game, in fact, neither had ever played before!
So I set up a simple set of parameters for them.
Each had a 10-man squad, 10 tac marines vs 10 necron warriors.
No sgts, special weapons, ICs, didn't even get into reanimation protocols.
All they did was learn how to move the squads as a unit, how to fire rapid fire weapons both at max and at half range, how to determine LOS, how to roll for hits, wounds and armor saves.

The two protagonists were:

Image
Jonathan, 8 years old, son of Time Wizard with a squad of 10 Necron Warriors.

Image
Trevor, 8 years old, friend and classmate of Jonathan wiht a squad of 10 Space Marines.

They were tutored in how to play (again, simplified to start) they moved their squads, fired and made saves, and Jonathan won the battle with 1 warrior left standing.

They wanted to play another game, but by themselves, so I moved back into my private lair and under the watchful eye of the referee Cassandra (my 11 year old) they commenced another battle, which Jonathan again won, this time with 2 warriors remaining.

They wanted to play again, but bedtime was approaching, so their next battle will wait till the morrow, after they return from yet another friend's birthday bash. At this time they will start to have ICs with their units, and after that we will move into more of the rules (morale checks, assaulting, etc.).

What they didn't have to be taught was how to have fun moving models and rolling dice, that they took to naturally. It mattered not who won, in fact, they both did. A great gaming evening was had by all!

So I felt duty bound to post this, their first batrep, here in the "AoS Public House" for all to enjoy over a pint off their favorite beverage.

More to come!

Great news. When I started (about the age of 11-12) I didn't have anyone to teach me or to start playing games with painted models and ready made terrain so tell them they are very lucky!

I'm glad they had so much fun. At that age you'll now have set their imaginations on fire!

Sounds awesome, Time!! Glad to see they are getting into it and enjoying learning to play!!

Just one question... Are you ready to face Trevor's parents when they start seeing the cost of the armies?? lol

Trust me, Jonathan's sister is not biased towards her brother! :)

Of course! Would be my pleasure!

And on a side note, they boys just got home from the party and are busily engaged in another battle!

First thing they wanted to do when they got home.

I enjoyed this story. My 9 year old daughter prefers live role playing in the living room where she always has the best powers and weapons and I generally get hurt.
Please shopkeeper do you have anything heavy?

That is very possible! Jonathan doesn't turn 9 until December, so we have pleanty of time to prepare for it.

They have now had about 5 or 6 battles. Still just using tac squads for the most part. The next step I think is to give them each a squad of assault marines.
Since they have bolt pistols and chainswords, the boys will have to move them in close and they can start to understand the assault rules.

I must admit that watching them play is great! They measure carefully, throw dice well and communicate with each other about game events. They are very respectful towards the minis and the terrain pieces moving things around in a very precise manner. Plus, they are having a great time together playing 40K! That to me is the game at its best!
