Recon in Force: Necrons vs Marines 2000 points (pic heavy!)

Postby timewizard » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:19 am

The Marine force was investigating a ruined city on their planet. Though most of the ruins had long since been stripped of any useful materials, the Chapter Master wanted them to be sure. Suddenly the scanners came alive! A Necron force probing for weaknesses in the planetary defenses were conducting a reconnaissance in force and the Space Marines had but moments to prepare for their onslaught...

Background: This is our second battle mission scenario. We have been choosing the 3 Necron and 3 Marine missions by a roll of the dice. Our first battle was Ambush! (found here) In that battle, Eric set up the terrain since it was supposed to be an ambush in Necron territory. This battle was a Necron reconnaissance of Marine territory so I got to set up the terrain. We rolled 4 objective markers with the Necron player placing the first and third. Before the marines deploy, the Necron player writes down which board edge he will move on from. The marines then deploy in the center of the table, more than 12" from any table edge. Then the game starts with the Necron player taking the first turn. When we rolled for this mission a few weeks ago, I told Eric to choose his force carefully since I was going to make the terrain as tough as possible for him to maneuver through. This is what the board looked like. The objective markers are circled in red, I placed mine in the ruins, Eric placed his near one edge of the board (should have given me a clue as to which edge he would arrive from!) I made sure to place difficult and some dangerous terrain all around the table in an attempt to slow down the Necron advance giving me time to respond.

Image

My forces were;

(2X) Tac squad (flamer, missile launcher, sgt w chainsword) with a rhino, split into combat squads as follows;
(RA) Rhino Antioch with (A) flamer, sgt and 3 bolters embarked.
(RB) Rhino Bedlam with (B) flamer, sgt and 3 bolters embarked.
(C) Combat squad with missile launcher and 4 bolters.
(D) Combat squad with missile launcher and 4 bolters.
(KS) Kayvaan Shrike joined with a (F) 5 man assault squad.
(E) 5 man Scout squad with sniper rifles and camo cloaks.
(H) Dreadnought with plasma cannon and CCW.
(I) Devastator squad with 4 missile launchers.
(J) Land speeder typhoon variant (Flash).
(K) Land speeder typhoon variant (Thunder).
(L) Vindicator with dozer blade (Shiva).
(M) Vindicator with dozer blade (Trinity).
(LRR) Land raider redeemer (Tarkus) and Sergeant Chronus with (G) 5 man Terminator assault squad embarked.

My deployment looked like this;
Image

In battle chronicler I was set up like so;
Image

I had my scouts holding 1 objective and a missile launcher combat squad holding another, both units in ruins. I hoped it would prove difficult for the Necrons to push these units off the objectives and the markers were placed on the upper floors so that even being on the ground floor would not be enough to contest the objectives!

Now the Necrons began to arrive. Their forces were;
(A) Necron Lord with destroyer body, WarScythe, phase shifter and res orb
(B) 10 Warriors
(C) 10 Warriors
(D) 10 Warriors
(E) 7 Scarab swarms
(F) 5 Destroyers
(G) 3 Heavy destroyers
(H) 5 Destroyers
(I) Monolith
(J) Monolith

The Necron Lord joined the Scarab swarms and moved into the center of the table. Behind them were a unit of warriors and behind that the heavy destroyers and a unit of destroyers. They were flanked by the 2 monoliths.

Image

On the Necron right flank were 2 more units of warriors planning to move onto 1 objective.

Image

On the Necron left flank was the other unit of destroyers.

Image

The Necrons thought they were in pretty good shape in the center to move against the objective marker.

Image

The Marines could do nothing else for the moment but wait for the onslaught.

Image Image

Having moved onto the table, the Necrons commenced their shooting phase. In this battle mission, fog of war is in effect so every unit must pass a leadership test before being able to fire or assault.

Image

The warriors all tried to run forward but rolled dismally (a '1', a '1' and a '2'). The heavy destroyers fired at speeder (K) but all 3 shots missed. The destroyers (F) shot at the closest marine unit (D) killing 3 of them. The destroyers on the left flank (H) and a clear shot at land speeder (J) and after the smoke from the 15 shots cleared, the speeder was wrecked. Monolith (J) discharged it's particle whip at the devastators (I) but only managed to kill 1 marine, the sgt. Monolith (I) discharged its particle whip at Antioch (RA) but the shot scattered and missed everything. The Lord and scarabs choose not to try to run and assault the Marines which cost them dearly. Marine squad D passes it's morale check and held firm. The Marines held 2 objectives, the Necrons contested 1 and 1 was unclaimed.

Now the Marines started to reposition. Land speeder (K) moved to the left to avoid the heavy destroyers. The dread (H) moved left also to try to flank the Necrons. Antioch (RA) moved 12" into the ruin, popped smoke and unit (A) disembarked. Bedlam (RB) repositioned behind cover. Tarkus (LRR) moved forward 6", popped smoke and the terminators (G) disembarked. Kayvaan and the assault squad moved 12" to their right to go at the Necron's other flank. Both vindicators (L and M) moved slightly to get a shot at the Necrons.

Image

Vindicator (L) shot the destroyers (H) bring 2 of them down. Tarkus (LRR) fired the left flamestorm at the scarabs but missed. The (LRR) machine spirit did better firing at warrior (B) downing 2 of them. The dread (H) incredibly found a line of sight to warrior unit (D) downing 3 of them. The speeder (K) fired the typhoons at (D) and brought 3 more down. Then squad (A) fired at (D) bringing another warrior down. The devastators (I) unloaded on the destroyers (F) hitting 3 of them. The scouts (E) fired at the destroyers (F) as well but missed with every shot. Shrike (KS) and the assault squad (F) ran a bit further and the terminators (G) ran towards the warriors (B) to get within assault range. Units (C) and (D) failed their morale checks and couldn't fire. Finally, vindicator (M) opened fire on the lord (A) and scarabs (E). The shot didn't scatter and Eric now realized it was a huge mistake to attach the lord to the scarab swarms. Not only were the swarms vulnerable to blasts, but the lord had to use the scarabs' toughness of 3! The Lord (A) goes down and 5 scarab bases (E) suffer instant death. All in all a devastating turn for the Necrons! The only good news was that all Necron units that had to passed their morale checks. The Marines still hold 2 objectives, the other 2 are unclaimed and uncontested.

Image

Eric rolled for WBB and the dice were still favoring the marines! Destroyer (H) failed to bring anyone back, destroyer (F) got 2 back and warriors (B) and (D) got 1 and 5 back respectively. Adding insult to injury, the Lord failed his WBB and was gone for good! Now the Necrons started moving, The remaining 2 scarab swarms (E) moved closer to the terminators to assault them, the Heavy destroyers (G) moved to the other side of monolith (I) to be able to shoot at the speeder, Monolith (J) moved 6" forward and the destroyers (H) and (F) moved slightly closer to the Marines.

Image

Destroyers (H) shot at the scouts (E) but only managed to kill one scout. Monolith (I) discharged its particle whip at Marine unit (A) but is scattered and only caught 2 Marines. The Heavy destroyers (G) fired at the same unit (A) and managed to kill the rest of the squad. Warrior unit (C) shot at Tarkus (LRR) but failed to do any damage (Chronus helped the tanks ignore the shaken and stunned results!). Destroyer unit (F) now fired at the scouts (E) for 8 wounds and even after the scouts go to ground 2 are still killed. Monolith (J) discharges its particle whip at the devastators (I) and cover saves bring the damage to only 2 marines dead. Marine units (E) and (I) pass their morale tests and stand fast. The scarabs (E) now assault the terminators (G) still locked in battle with Necron warriors (B). When the assault finishes, the scarabs have 1 full base, a base with 1 wound remaining and Necron warrior unit (B) is destroyed. The Terminators are unscathed but are now locked in combat with the scarabs. So much for moving against the heavy destroyers next turn. The Marines still have 2 objectives the other 2 still unclaimed.

The Marines are on the move again. Squad (D) moves down 1 floor to get out of LOS and to control the objective marker. Vindicator (M) moves to get a shot on the warriors. Shrike (KS) and the assault squad (F) move 12" towards the destroyers on their right hoping to get close enough to assault them. The dread (H) and speeder (K) both move further to their right to target the Necron units on the flank. Vindicator (L) moves back to get out of range of the monolith (J). Tarkus (LRR) moves 6" into the ruins to get closer to the Necron warriors. Bedlam (RB) moves slightly out of range to protect the other scoring unit. Antioch (RA) seeing its squad (A) get wiped out charges forward tank shocking warrior unit (D) who pass their morale check but have to move back to avoid the rhino. The terminators (G) are still locked in combat with the scarabs (E).

Image

The speeder (K) shoots at the heavy destroyers (G) and destroys all 3 heavys! The devastators (I) fire their missiles at the destroyers in the center (F) and drop 1 of them. Vindicator (M) fires the demolisher at the warriors (C) in the center. The shot scatters off most of the warriors but over the destroyers (F) downing 3 warriors (C) and killing of the rest of the destroyers (F)! Vindicator (L) targets the monolith (J) and though the shot is on target, the monolith is obscured by enough of the ruin to get a cover save, which it makes. The dread (H) is able to get a shot off at warrior unit (D) but the shot scatters and misses. Squad (C) fires a missile at the warriors (C) but the shot again scatters off and misses. Tarkus (LRR) hits the warriors (C) with the left flamestorm putting 3 warriors down. Now Shrike (KS) and the assault squad (F) run far enough to assault the destroyers (H) and bring 2 destroyers down with no wounds suffered in return. The terminators (G) defeat the rest of the scarabs (E) in close combat. Necron units (C) and (H) pass their morale tests. The Marines now have 3 objectives and the last one is unclaimed.

Image

Things are getting desperate for the Necrons. More bad WBB rolls bring only 1 warrior from (C) back. The left monolith (J) pivots to bring its portal facing the Marines and the destroyers (H) teleport through and both destroyers make their second WBB roll and return! The other monolith (I) pivots its portal to face the other monolith and warrior unit (D) teleports through. The remains of warrior unit (C) move forward 4" towards the objective marker.

Image

The Necrons don't have much left to shoot with. Monolith (I) uses the gauss flux on everything in range with; 3 attacks on Tarkus (LRR) to no effect, 1 attack on Antioch (RA) which misses and 6 attacks on the terminators (G) which after 5 hits and a failed save kills 1 terminator. Monolith (J) fires its gauss flux and; 4 attacks all hit the devastators (I) but they make every save and 3 attacks on the assault squad (F) all miss. The destroyers (H) fire at the scouts (E) removing 1 more. Warrior squad (C) shoots at Tarkus (LRR) immobilizing it but the other warrior squad (D) fails to damage Tarkus any further. The scouts pass their morale check. The Marines hold 2 objectives, 1 is contested and 1 is unclaimed.

The Marines smelled blood (or oil in the case of the Necrons) and closed in for the kill. The terminators (G) moved along side the monolith (I) to try to close with the warriors (D). Bedlam (RB) moved in behind Tarkus (LRR) and the speeder (K) moved around to get a shot at the warriors. The remaining scout (E) moved back in the ruin. Vindicator (L) moved forward slightly to shoot at the destroyers (H). Shrike (KS) and the assault squad (F) moved 12" towards the destroyers to try to cloes into assault range. The dread (H) moved around the ruin, but I can't remember why I did that! Antioch (RA) moved back towards the ruin stopping at the objective marker.

Image

Tarkus (LRR) opened fire with the right flamestorm and the assault cannon on warrior (C) but only managed to bring 1 warrior down. The machine spirit fired the left sponson at warrior (D) downing 2 of them. The speeder (K) fired a frag missile at warrior unit (C) but it scattered onto warrior (D) downing 1 Necron. Vindicator (M) shot at warrior (C) but the shot scattered a bit and only took 2 warriors down. The devastators (I) fired at warrior (C) bringing another one down. Combat squad (C) shoots at warrior (C) but misses. Vindicator (L) shoots at the destroyers (H) and hits removing 2 destroyers. The last scout (E) shoots at the remaining destroyer (H) but misses. The terminators (G) run close enough to the warriors (D) to assault them. Kayvaan (KS) and the assault squad (F) run towards the last destroyer but don't get close enough to assault. The terminators (G) now assault the warriors (D) wiping them out.

At this point, even if the remaining Necrons made all their WBB rolls, they would still be below phase out so the game ends.

ImageImageImageImage

The Marines were closing in on the remains of the Necron force, the air heavy with the smell of battle. Suddenly the air around the Necron machins and the remains of their warriors shimmered with a ghostly green light. It enveloped the Necrons growing in intensity. In moments, the light faded out and the Necrons were gone! The Marines looked around and knew that once again the Necrons had used their powerful machines to phase shift back to their ship. They would be back, and as strong as ever. For now though, the Apothecaries began to move among the wounded and the servitors were summoned to repair the Marine's vehicles. The battle was over....for now.

Cool stuff. You're really getting the hang of battle chronicler.

How come the Lord went down from a single vindicator shot?

He had to use the toughness of the scarab swarms (T3) because he was joined to them and you have to use the majority toughness, and the demolisher cannon is S10 causing instant death.
He had a chance at WBB because of the res orb.
Did we do that right?

EDIT: I just had a re-read of the BRB and it looks like we did it wrong. We knew that you used the majority toughness of the unit to allocate wounds and thought it applied to instant death as well. But looking at the instant death rule, it appears that instant death is based on the model's toughness, not the unit's, so the lord should not have been instant killed because he was on a destroyer body giving him toughness 6. So he actually should have only taken 1 wound from the vindicator (he failed his invulnerable save) and that would have changed how I proceeded with the rest of the first turn. Nice catch Matt, thanks!

Great Battle report - another win for the Space Marines (just confirms my feelings of the current Necron codex - sub par).

Love the use of bases to identify units in the pictures, nice high visability.

Great Battle Chronicle maps, how do you do the arrows on the image?
Are they the jpegs editted outside in Paint or other tool?

It seems that I'm the only idiot that can't seem to deal with crons!

+1 for the instant death thing, btw.

Thanks! They serve 2 purposes. One is they identify the units in the pictures. The other is that it simplifies note taking during the game. I set up an ms excel worksheet and use it to keep notes. If anyone is interested, I converted it to word and then to a pdf, and it's uploaded here.

They were easy enough to make too. I just printed out the lettered circles from a power point program (any other program would do too) and then glued them on to slotted bases.

They are in the latest version of battle chronicler. When you move a unit you have a few options. You can leave the arrows (which are white) or choose not to show them, or designate the unit as charging (the arrows are then red) or falling back (the arrows go yellow).
One thing that I found useful is that you can adjust the size of the units at the beginning of each turn. So if a unit of 5 marines takes 3 casualties, the following turn I change the size of the unit from 5 to 3, the marker showing the unit then shrinks slightly showing the attrition of the unit.

+1 for the instant death thing, btw.

I just do my best to try to capitalize on every mistake my opponent makes! 8)
I also try to destroy his entire unit in one phase to deny WBB. This battle it was a little tough to do.

Re:the instant death thing, which do you agree with? 1st post or the edit?

That's a point!
Shouldn't have been insta killed!

Dropped the same clanger once a while back with a tomb spider and scarabs.

Did you see the Queen?
If so, ask about the combination for the wall safe in the big room with the pictures ... I can't figure it out.

Well, as difficult as it was finding a Queen in Manhattan (look here! :twisted: ) I did manage to ask her that very question.
She said the combination is a princess's measurements, but wouldn't go any further! :wink:

I think you have a better shot at grabbing the family jewels! :lol:
