The Black Widows vs Tentacle Tide: Female SM vs Female SM

Postby DoctorThunder » Mon Dec 29, 2008 7:44 am

Thanatois fumbled with the black thread that secured the blood-soaked pouch to his belt. The flesh on his hands had been burned to a black layer of crisp that cracked and oozed as he forced his fingers to move. Although his hands trembled with pain he refused to allow himself to feel it. As a Sorcerer of the Inner Circle, his pride would not allow something as lowly as a whimper, even as his vital fluids rolled down his armor onto the dying ground.
His hand emerged from the pouch and cast the bones before him, and his one remaining eye widened at what he saw. Two phalanges, with symmetrical cracks, above three metatarsus, all cloven in two. It was the sign of the grinning cannibal.
Quicker then before, Thanatois crawled the last few meters towards to the edge of his stone well. Unholy light emanated from beneath as breathless souls clawed at his flesh with hands of smoke. He cursed as he spat. He knew his body could not regenerate yet. He had exhausted his reserves during the battle, and with his company slaughtered to the man, his former allies were now coming to claim him as their own. The Widows to use his body as a breeder, and The Emperor’s Children to sacrifice his soul to She Who Thirsts. He needed no bones to divine his chances. He could only hope to replenish his reserves before he was taken.
As he slipped into the gurgling pool, he found himself doing something he had not done in ten lifetimes.

He prayed.

The Black Widows Army List

I was very excited to play against Mike (Mephistoles1) again. He and I squared off last year during the ‘Ard Boyz qualifiers when my Valkyrie Drop Troopers beat his Eldar, so I know he was chomping at the bit for a rematch.

One of the true delights of the game is to have two fully-painted armies squaring off against each other, and Mike did not disappoint. Not only were his models beautifully painted, but they contained many small and subtle conversions that not only fit his theme but really made for one of the most awesome armies I’ve seen in a long time. “Slaanesh Tentacle” is a difficult theme to pull off effectively. I’ve often said that a properly done Slaanesh army can’t be played in a family store, but Mike found a way to fulfill his theme tastefully and appropriately.

I’ve always been a sucker for flamer weapons, even back in 3rd and 4th edition, long before they became fashionable with the “in” crowd. So, when I saw the rules for Vulkan He’Stan I knew I’d have to rework the Widows to make a list based on his abilities.

In 5th edition, I’m a big fan of scoring units, and I’m always looking for ways to make scoring units better so I can just take lots of them. Free heavy and special weapons on the already undercoated basic marine squad, you say? Free twin-linking on said free heavy weapons, you say? I think I’m sold.

The Tentacle Tide Army List

I was very excited to meet with Aaron (Doc Thunder) for this battle. My army, The Tentacle Tide is a mostly Slaanesh themed Chaos force with an Emperors Children style to them. It was once an exclusively Emperors Children force, but with the removal of that list from the Codex, they worked on corrupting some Sisters of Battle to adhere to the new army structure. Normally I use a pretty mixed force, with renegade sisters of battle making up my regular CSM and Raptors (renegade Seraphim), as well as Noise Marines, Berserkers, and occasionally Obliterators. To keep in line with the background of our forces being allies, I decided to use almost exclusively female models. The Black Widows see men as mating material to be disposed of afterwards, so the only men in my list were a few mutated terminators and a very mutated sorcerer. With this theme I decided to leave some of the usual power hitters like Berserkers and Noise Marines out. I rested my strategy in armor ignoring close combat attacks since I was mostly brining basic marines to the table. To that design I put power fists in all but two of my squads, leaving two champions naked to summon the greater demon out of. To add more armor save ignoring attacks, I put in a Lash Princess, newly modeled and painted just for this battle, and a Tzeentch sorcerer with Warptime to make his force weapon attacks more potent.

Image

Here is the list I used:
Iselena: Winged Lash Princess 155
Gar-dath: Winged Tzeentch Sorcerer with Warptime 180?
Keeper of Secrets #666 : Greater Daemon 100
8 Chaos Space Marines, Champion with Power Fist, Melta Gun, Icon of Chaos Glory, Rhino. 215
8 Chaos Space Marines, Champion with Power Fist, Melta Gun, Icon of Chaos Glory, Rhino. 215
8 Chaos Space Marines, Champion with Power Fist, Melta Gun, Icon of Chaos Glory, Rhino. 215
8 Chaos Space Marines, Naked Champion, Melta Gun, Icon of Chaos Glory, Rhino. 190
8 Raptors, Champion with Power Fist, Melta Gun. 205
8 Raptors, Naked Champion, 2 Melta Guns. 190
3 Terminators, Power Fist, Combi-Plas x 3. 110

As you may have noticed I made a mistake with my list and went over the points limit of 1750. I subtracted my IoCG then put them back and ended up cutting the raptor squads by one member each on paper. I also toyed with the idea of giving the sorcerer an addition power and added and subtracted trying to see what that would look like. I fiddled with it too much though and ended up forgetting about the changes by the time I was putting models on the table. As you will see it the battle report, the extra model in each raptor squad did not do much to help me. So the lesson here is cheaters (even inadvertent ones) never prosper!

Setup:

Since The Widows would all be arriving by drop pod, setup was fairly quick. Mike setup his army within striking distance of the regeneration pool, using the rhinos to make a wall of armor to protect his warriors.

Image

Turn 1

The Tentacle Tide surged forwards, using smoke launchers to protect the rhinos as the augers of the Dark Mechanicus squealed alarm at the detection of incoming drop pods. Already the regeneration pool was nearly within their grasp.

Image

The Drop Pods of The Black Widows descended down, piercing through the black clouds, each one trailing a single strand of silver thread behind them. Squad Kuro landed along the left flank of the enemy line, while squad Haiiro landed along the right.
All seemed to be going along swimmingly, until disaster struck Squad Aka, whose attempt to land behind the Demon Princess scattered them off the table and rolling a 1 on the mishap chart, lost forever. In an unbelievable moment of bad luck, Squad Aka became a 50 million dollar lawn dart.

Furious at the needless loss of their sisters, Haiiro Squad completely annihilated a squad of Raptors, while Kuro reduced the other squad of Raptors to just a couple of models.

Turn 2

Things were looking grim for the Widows. On the left, the Champion of one of the CSM squads stumbled out of her Rhino then exploded in a fountain of blood and organs, allowing the Keeper of Secrets to fully emerge. The Keeper, along with the Sorcerer, the remaining raptors, and a fresh squad of Chaos Space Marines surrounded Squad Kuro, their firepower and ferocity in close combat reducing Kuro to only its sergeant and Captain Nariko.

Image

The right fared a little better. Despite the insane number of shots coming from two full CSM squads and a Demon Princess, backed up by a subsequent charge, Haiiro was only reduced to five members, and the Sorceress, despite having no invulnerable saves, managed to escape the demon princess’ attacks unscathed. Mike bowed his head in awe of seeing so many ones and twos at one time.
Image

Two more drop pods streaked down from the skies. Squads Shiro and Momoiro claimed the objective and split into combat squads and used their twin-linked meltaguns to attack all four rhinos at once, destroying two and blasting the weapon off a third.
Image

On the right, Mistress Sorano had a trick up her sleeve. Using Gate of Infinity, she and her squad left combat, and using their pod’s locator beacon, safely reappeared just inches away in the perfect location for another round of flamer love. The twin-liked ability of the flamers again proved devastating, catching both CSM squads, reducing one to three members, and the other to five.
Image

On the left, Kuro’s sergeant was easily dispatched but Captain Nariko proved to be a hard nut to crack. Not only was she able to save every single wound put on her, but she killed four CSM’s, winning the combat and putting a wound on the greater daemon due to the resulting instability.

Turn 3

The squad of Chaos Terminators arrived and teleported to the safety of the trees on the right, far away from the objective, and along with the survivors of the destroyed rhino, attacked Momoiro squad, reducing one combat squad to the sergeant thanks to blue bolts of combi-plasma, and locking the four survivors of the other combat squad in HTH combat.
Image

On the right, the surviving CSM’s and demon princess again surrounded squad Haiiro and fired before charging. This time the Widows’ luck had run out, and they were wiped out along with Mistress Sorano.
Image

On the left, Captain Nariko, whom Mike had nicknamed Vulkana, once again proved invincible, making a total of nine invulnerable saves. This was especially frustrating to the sorcerer, who was using warptime for re-rolls, and only needed her to fail a single saving throw to use the force weapon’s instant-kill ability. Nariko finished off the CSM squad, winning the combat, and again the greater demon lost a wound due to instability.
Image

On the Widow’s turn Squad Murasaki arrived on the right, using the locator beacon of the fallen Haiiro squad to position themselves perfectly. Once again, twin-linked flamers wreaked havoc, reducing the blue CSM squad to a single model.
Image
In the center Shiro Squad moved up and fired on the pink CSM squad hiding bravely in the woods, reducing it to a single model.
Image

In the HTH combat phase, the surviving sergeant of Momoiro squad joined in the melee in the center, killing two CSM’s but unable to make them flee, while Captain Nariko again made another 6 3+ invulnerable saves, while finishing off the raptors and putting yet another instability wound on the greater daemon, who was no down to one wound!

Turn 4

On the right, Lash Princess Iselena decided she was done playing around. Using lash whip, she drew Murasaki Squad out into a long line, allowing her, the terminators, and the remaining CSM to all charge and destroy them in a blood-gushing display of deadly pleasure.
Image

In the center, the pink CSM sergeant showed her bravery by charging in to relieve her besieged comrades fighting squad Momoiro, only to lose the combat and promptly turn around and run away again.

On the left, Captain Nariko turned all of her attention to the sorcerer. Her luck was bound to fail sooner or later, and the force weapon was definitely the biggest threat. Her focus cost her dearly, however, as one of the greater daemon’s attacks got through her defenses, making her take her first wound, and despite hitting and wounding with all of her attacks, the sorcerer made one too many invulnerable saves and was left with one wound.

On the Widow’s turn, Momoiro squad finally finished off the last of the CSM’s from the destroyed rhino, and the drop pods storm bolters, which had managed to do nothing thus far in the game, killed the final member of the blue CSM squad that was bravely cowering behind a rhino.
Now that blasted demon princess was loose again, and only Shiro squad remained on the objective. Taking a gamble, Shiro squad opted not to help out Vulkana, and instead opened fire on the demon princess. Despite having a twin-linked multi-melta and meltagun shot (the only time in this game I got to use a multi-melta), and a cacophony of bolter rounds, the princess only took a single wound. (Mike seemed unable to fail invulnerable saves by this point in the game) Image

The gambit failed. Weary from eight rounds of close combat, Captain Nariko failed to wound a single time, despite the fact that both the greater demon and sorcerer were down to their final wound. Mike’s bad luck with HTH dice finally karmically adjusted itself, and Vulkana was slain.
Image

Turn 5

With a greater daemon, a chaos sorcerer, a terminator squad, and a demon princess now free to bear down on the remnants of Shiro and Momoiro, the results were predictably bloody. The remaining Black Widows were hewn down in a gross display or orgiastic ecstasy by the fervent champions of Slaanesh.
Image
The slaughter was bitter-sweet, however, as Mike watched in horror as his final scoring model courageously ran off the table.
Image

RESULT: DRAW

Battle Aftermath
Black ichors dripped from its wounds as The Keeper of Secrets fought to maintaining it’s presence in this reality. It had no lungs, yet it breathed heavily through bovine nostrils. It had no muscles, yet it moaned in ecstasy as its body throbbed from exertion.
All around it on the ground grass and insects writhed in pain as their existence was warped beyond recognition from their proximity to it.
The Keeper reached a long taloned hand down into the boiling green waters, but found no body there. Startled, it stomped it’s mighty hooves, breaking the ground asunder. The well burst upwards, spilling green contents but the body of Thanatois was no longer within.
Distantly, a fell laughter carried across the wind, and the Keeper of Secrets howled and roared in frustration.

Doctor Thunder After Battle Thoughts
Wow, what a hard fought game that was. Loosing 1/3rd of my first wave to a bad scatter was a tough blow, but that only inspired me to fight all the harder. Mike is a really great player who knows his army well, so I knew that I was going to be fighting an uphill battle and I couldn’t count on him to make any mistakes, so I tried to focus on eliminating his scoring units as my first priority. The benefit of my army is that almost everything scores, so I knew he’d basically have to wipe me out to keep me from holding the objective, which he unfortunately did, but not before I’d eliminated all of his scoring units as well.
Mike is a lot of fun to be around, so I had a really great time, which is the whole point. He managed to keep me continually in HTH combat, where he had the clear advantage, and all of my clever delaying tactics only worked for so long.
The woman of the match was definitely Captain Nariko, who managed to survive 8 rounds of combat all by herself, taking down a marine and a raptor squad and reducing both his sorcerer and greater demon to a single wound before finally succumbing to her wounds. I never thought a 3+ invulnerable save wound make such a huge difference, but it really does. Vulkana is a beast in HTH combat, and since she has a reroll both on the to-hit and to-wound rolls, she seems to always reliably take down about four enemy marines each turn.

Mephistoles1 After Battle Thoughts
What a close game! I went in pretty confident that I would mostly be safe from the initial drop. Boy was I wrong! Even with Aaron losing one pod to a deepstrike mishap I lost one entire raptor squad and all half of the other one. For some reason I didn’t think about protecting those raptor quads. Perhaps they got too complacent around their allies and were very surprised by the sudden drop of once friendly troops. I did my best to keep Aarons’ forces in hand to hand combat where my forces have the extra advantage of numbers and more armor ignoring attacks. My first few rounds of combat did not go so well, and what should have been sweeping victories from 14 pistol shots, 2 melta gun shots, 42 regular attacks, 6 power fist attacks and 5 monstrous creature attacks on my charging turn turned into a measly two kills thanks to a slew of whiffed rolls, leaving almost the entire Marine squad the chance to gate out on Aaron’s turn and fire into me again. There on my left flank combat turned to my favor in the following rounds, though the toll was costly as my troop units dwindled in numbers with each victory. My right flank was dominated for almost the entire game by the insurmountable Vulkan He’stan’s female counterpart. No matter how many armor ignoring attacks I threw at her, she just kept making the 3+ invulnerable save. It wasn’t until the turn 5 that the combined 9 armor ignoring attacks a round finally took their toll. My poor sorcerer was frothing at the mouth(or fanglike appendages in his case) waiting for one of his force weapon attacks to break through that save, but alas, it never happened. By that time though we laughed as my only surviving scoring troop ran from the board. With no troops all I could do was annihilate the remnants of my once allies forces and hope the Sorcerer was still inside the healing pool when we got there. I was not to be and as all of my bloodied HQ units arrived at the center of the board they could only stare in shock at the empty pool and the lingering laughter of the Sorcerer who had taken advantage of the clash between our forces to finish his revitalization and escape.
As when any two gamers from different areas gather we came across a few rules that we understood differently, but we were able to reach consensus in all cases and resolve things quickly and amicably. Aaron was a great opponent and for his first game with the new marine codex he used a great force that not only fit his theme, but was challenging to play against. I loved the chance to see the Black Widows in person. The conversions were great and very well done, and it is always wonderful to put your models down across the table from another army that is painted well. I welcome the next time our forces clash, I know it will be a great game, and perhaps next time one of us will be able to pull a win out of it!

great batrep, and gorgeous pics too! :D

one thing i would have liked to see though were some close-ups of individual units in the CSM force - maybe your opponent can sign up and add some? :?:

a question that was on my mind: i take it the Pods werent all destroyed? its just you said you were wiped out, but also that the game was a draw... :?

cheers :)

Okay, I'll ask Mike if he has some close-ups I can link to, or if he can come here and post some.

Good point. I should have explained that we were playing a mission with the regeneration pool as the single objective. None of my pods were destroyed, but I lost all my scoring units, so neither one of us could do anything but contest the objective, which is why it was a draw.

Some interesting work there. A few odd looking conversions, but those are overshadowed by lashings of sweet stuff.
