The scouring of Kobon IV – Mission 2

Postby mattjgilbert » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:05 am

Part two in the campaign so both sides able to field slightly larger patrol forces without being able to commit enough troops for a larger encounter. Looking at our list that meant we were playing a 750 point game using the Combat Patrol rules.

Background
Having taken the initiative early in the campaign, the Ultramarines were now making a push against the city and the suspected base of operations for the uprising. A company Thunderhawk has been called in to make some reconnaissance passes over a large plateau south of the city before being used to ferry equipment into the area. Intelligence also reports that scouts picked up some refugees from the region with stories of foul sacrifices to the Chaos gods and cultists gathering in power.

During the final sweep of the plateau before making its first drop-off, the Thunderhawk encountered freak and violent weather patterns, too strong even for the might of the ancient and venerable machine. The Thunderhawk has been brought down in wasteland ravaged by intense fighting as roaming cultists have laid waste to the local area. One of the injured pilots has reported in with disturbing news and Chaplain Agrippa has gathered a force to quickly move in for rescue and retrieval. Without the air superiority granted by the Thunderhawks the marines would be forced to fight a much slower ground based campaign.

Mission 2: Force Supremacy (page 254 main rulebook).
Force Selection: Matt

Chaplain (Reclusiarch) Agrippa with bolt pistol, jump pack and frag grenades = 107 points
Agrippa has Preferred Enemy (Alpha Legion)

Tactical squad Renius: 5 marines with flamer and frag grenades, Vet Serg with bolt pistol and Power weapon, Razorback with hvy bolters, extra armour and smoke = 205 points
Squad Renius has Furious Charge.

Tactical squad Invictus: 5 marines with heavy bolter = 80 points

Tactical squad Octavian: 5 marines with flamer and frag grenades = 86 points

Landspeeder with Multilmelta and heavy flamer = 75 points

Landspeeder = 50 points

Assault Squad Aeolus 4 marines with 2 flamers, 1 vet serg with bolt pistol and power weapon = 147 points.

Total = 750 points.

Matt’s notes: I stuck with the same force as the previous mission. Apart from keeping the squads that had earned veteran skills, I wanted to keep the narrative going and make sure Agrippa still lead the early part of this campaign. The scouts had died though and rather than replace them I went for speed adding 2 Landspeeders and an Assault squad to represent the force hurrying to the area to rescue survivors and secure the Thunderhawk before it fell into the wrong hands. Renius himself was beefed up with veteran sergeant status and his squad increased by one marine and gained some transport. I hoped to deliver them somewhere their Furious Charge could be put to good use. The Assault Squad would work with Agrippa on one Flank while the Landspeeders operated down the other. I just had to look out for any outflanking sneakiness from the Chaos side.

Image

Force Selection: Jon

Militia Platoon HQ Squad – Sire Leader Tarl (Champion) with Powerfist and Bolt Pistol
3 Militiamen (2 with CC weapon and Laspistol/1 with Meltagun)
1 Veteran with Demo Charge + Laspistol/CC weapon

Squad White – Veteran 1 Veteran with Demo Charge + Laspistol/CC weapon
7 Militiamen lasrifles/1 militiaman Grenade Launcher/1 Militiaman Missile Launcher + Laspistol/CC weapon. Squad has Veteran Skill Tank Hunters

Squad Red – Veteran 1 Veteran with Demo Charge + Laspistol/CC weapon
7 Militiamen lasrifles/1 militiaman Grenade Launcher/1 Militiaman Missile Launcher + Laspistol/CC weapon.

Squad Black – Veteran 1 Veteran with Demo Charge + Laspistol/CC weapon
7 Militiamen lasrifles/1 militiaman Grenade Launcher/1 Militiaman Missile Launcher + Laspistol/CC weapon.

Disciples of Kobon Squad – Champion Vren with Power weapon and Demo charge
3 Disciples with Shotguns, 3 disciples with Laspistol/cc weapon, 1 disciple with Grenade launcher, 1 disciple with Meltagun, 1 disciple with Flamer.

Alpha Legion Squad Corvinus – Aspiring Champion Corvinus with Powerfist/Bolt pistol/Bolt gun. 1 Veteran Legionnaire with Missile Launcher/Bolt pistol/CC weapon, 1 Veteran Legionnaire with Plasma Gun/Bolt pistol/CC weapon, 1 Veteran Legionnaire with Meltagun/Bolt pistol/CC weapon, 4 1 Veteran Legionnaires with Bolt gun/Bolt pistol/CC weapon.

Jons Notes: The basic plan is for the 3 squads and command squad to hold the line while I keep back both the Alpha Legion squad and the Disciple Squad to intercept any units coming down the flanks. I fully expect to be out manoeuvred so have elected to keep both Elite Squads in reserve as ‘outflanking’ units. Once (if) the flanks have been dealt with and my objective secure I will try to move my Champion + 1 other squad onto the Space Marine’s Objective (or at least ensure that no scoring units contest it).

Fluff

Postby mattjgilbert » Wed Oct 08, 2008 9:05 am

Custodian Veldite struggled with the Thunderhawk Transporter’s controls as the unnaturally sudden and violent storm threw the heavy craft about the skies; the craft shook and bucked as opposing cross winds tried to spin it about. The instruments spun crazily giving impossible and conflicting readings.

“This is Transporter Eagle 4, heavy storm front above primary landing zone. I am losing control. Warn off all remaining birds….”

An arc of lightning slammed into the Ultramarine ship and all the lights in the cockpit went out, glass exploded and a howling scream filled the cockpit.

Dead Stick. No Response.

Custodian Veldite needed no instrumentation to tell him the Thunderhawk was critically damaged.

A quick glance behind him at the engineer’s station where 2 Chapter Serfs (a watch keeper and a loadmaster) sat showed that the rear of the cockpit was a mass of fire; both Serfs already dead and consumed by it. Time to leave. His hand reached the lower Ejection handle.

“This is Transporter Eagle 4, position…unknown, I am ejecting, repeat I am..”

There was an explosion. A sensation of being hit in the spine by an Ambull (something Veldite had experienced during training)... spinning... then a snap as his parachute opened.

He looked down. There was…something on the Plateau a thousand feet below – something small and throbbing. Unnatural. It seemed to be pulsing a strange green light into the heart of the storm.

Buffeted by howling winds and at the mercy of the storm, through the swirling clouds almost level with him he could see the Transporter on fire and in a flat spin, both its port wings missing. A giant fork of green-tinged lightning leapt out from the depths of the storm and struck the helpless aircraft. Its cargo of munitions exploded and ripped through the rear side of the hold with such violence that even from his position a thousand or so yards away Veldite instinctively held up his arms in front of his face as the debris fanned out and imagined he could hear the wail of anguish from the ancient Thunderhawk despite the deafening roar of the wind.

His head snapped back and then…nothing.

================================================================================================

Pain. Light. Pain. Breathe………Agony.

Veldite opened his eyes. He was on the ground, his chute dragging his body slowly across a plateau towards the edge of a precipice.

Blinking the dried blood from his eyes the Custodian checked the suits HUD and winced as the enormity of his injuries and damage to his armour were displayed.

He reached across his body with his right arm (his left was shattered) and hit the chute release – the shroud, released of its burden, whipping away in the wind.

“Any call sign this is Eagle 4..I am…arrgghh...down on a plateau south of the LZ…activating my transponder now….there is something here…I think it’s... causing the storm.”

Blackness. Pain. Whispers. Laughter. As his crackling comm unit brought him to his senses, he could feel something beyond the physical pain. Something close. Something new and joyful. Something born. Something malevolent.

His comm crackled again.

“+++….IS CHAPLAIN AGRIPPA………WE SEE YOUR TR……………….EN ROUTE TO YO………..FIVE MIN………ON BROTHER WE ARE COMING FOR YOU.....+++”

Veldite could feel his body shutting down and with the last of his strength began reciting the Hymn of Solace. At some point during the 5th recital - hypno suggested routines took over and his body went into hibernation mode.

================================================================================================

Sire-Leader Tarl looked back at the runner “You’re sure it was a chute?”

The Runner from White Squad still gulping down great lungful of air from his breathing unit nodded.

“Positive Sire-leader – and Red Squad thought they saw something explode of to the south, an Astartes aircraft of some sort. Maybe the crew got out?”

Sire-Leader Tarl nodded once. A Space Marine captive gifted to his Lord and Father would raise his standing among his many siblings (all Sire Leaders in the Governors army were the Governors ‘Bastard’ sons and therefore ‘half brothers’, each hungry for elevation). Yes they would advance and take any survivors alive.

“Go! Return to you squad – I will join you shortly.”

Tarl turned to the massive Space Marine Champion as well as the leader of the attached disciple squad with a disdainful look. He locked eyes with the disciple leader who was of a comparable height and didn’t make him nervous. He despised the man but he was competent enough. The Champion was at least a head taller than Tarl and in his power armour cut an imposing presence among the group. He gave off an air of restrained anger and often didn’t try to hide from his voice his distaste for taking orders from Tarl.

“You are both sworn to me….obey now. You are to flank the plateau and capture any survivors…I WANT THEM ALIVE! Do you understand?”

Disciple-leader Vren slammed to attention “YES SIRE LEADER” while the huge leader of the attached Chaos Marine Squad made no movement other than a slight incline of his head “+++IT WILL BE AS YOU SAY……SIRE…..LEADER…..TARL+++”

Tarl nodded satisfied before stalking off towards his command unit and Black Squad. The ritual had gone well and soon he would be rewarded beyond his dreams but what they – he – had done, what they had asked for, must be protected and nurtured.

He was unaware of the malicious look of fury that Champion Corvinus gave him as he did so nor did he hear the half spat, half whispered comment.

+++It will be 'just' as you say+++

Setup
This mission called for “the blasted waste between frontlines” and should include craters, barricades and single-storey ruins. Paul again set the terrain up for us and this is what we got:
Image

One objective each represented the injured Veldite...
Image

...and the source of the disturbance, a newly summoned, but weak Storm Daemon of Chaos

Image

Deployment

Jon – won the dice off and chose the south side of the battlefield deploying Squad White in the craters on the right hand side, Squad Red deployed behind the ruins on the left.

Image

Matt – Deployed Tactical Squad Invictus behind the central barricade on his side of the battlefield. Matt chose not to try to ‘seize the initiative’.

Image

We were ready to play

Turn 1 (Jon):
Sire-Leader Tarl along with Command Squad moved on behind Red Squad while Black Squad moved on taking up positions behind the barricade near to the Storm Daemon. Despite seeing movement in the pre-dawn darkness neither White Squad nor Red Squad were able to pick out targets. Sire-Leader Tarl and his command squad getting somewhat confused in the Darkness ran stumbling on towards the ruins (Jon had actually forgotten to ‘Run them’ and asked Matt if he could do so before Matt completed his movement – and invoking the spirit of Jervis, Matt decided to “Just Say Yes!” – Jon rolled a 1).

Image

Turn 1 (Matt):
Speeders Black and Gold juicing as much power from their engines as possible zoomed onto the battlefield hugging the ground as low as their expert pilots dared in an effort to come around the militias Right Flank. Following them but turning slightly away from the flank, Razorback ‘Pendruc’ raced on to the battlefield taking up position behind the Tank Trap on Matt’s Left with Tactical Squad Renius buttoned up inside.

Image

Chaplain Agrippa with Assault Squad Aeolus roared on and after landing ran forwards making use of the cover provided by the crater on Matt’s Right Flank. Tactical Squad Octavian moved on flanking the Jump packers and ran expertly through the terrain on Matt’s Right.

Image

Despite the increasing light Tactical Squad Invictus could not identify any targets.

Turn 2 (Jon):
With the Chaplain and the Assault Squad advancing on his left flank and 2 Speeders on his right, Sire-Leader Tarl activated his comm link: “Corvinus, Vren attack Now!” – there was no response.

Away to his right out of sight, Chaos Marine Champion Corvinus smiled and ignored the command, instead activated an alternate channel “+++VREN STAND BY AND BELAY THE SIRE LEADER’S COMMAND - WAIT FOR ‘MY’ ORDER+++”. An efficient double click answered him.

With no flank attack forthcoming, Tarl cursed and closed up with Red Squad in the ruins on the Militias left Flank. Red Squads Leader However seeing the Assault Marines powering towards him ordered his Squad to fall back further into the Ruins and out of charge range (or so he hoped!).

Image

On the right, Squad White using their hard won Tank hunter skills engaged Speeder Black with Lasgun, Krak Missile and Krak Grenade. Bracketed by a storm of laser shot and explosions the Pilot of the Speeder shouting a prayer to Roboute Guilliman, ducked and weaved using every ounce of skill he possessed and somehow evaded every shot. (Despite getting 2 Penetrating and 1 glancing hit Matt made every 4+ save – much to Jon’s disgust). Squad Black’s Rocket launcher also engaged the Heavy flamer equipped Speeder but the anti-tank rocket clipped the ruins and spiralled away above the vehicle harmlessly. On the Militia’s left both the advancing command squad and ‘retreating’ Squad Red’s Grenade launchers spat Frag grenades into Chaplain Agrippa and Assault Squad Aeolus with Red Squad’s munitions exploding among the Ultra Marines Assault Squad.

Image

A single red-hot fragment penetrated one of the Squad’s 2 flamer equipped Assault Marines spare fuel Canisters and it and the Marine disappeared in a fiery explosion. Agrippa, shaking with fury began to sing the Hymn of Vengeance and the surviving Assault Marines quickly joined in eager to avenge their fallen comrade. (Jon actually cheered wildly at this point – it was the first time Matt had failed a single Armour save during the campaign so far!)

Turn 2 (Matt):
Singing their battle hymn Agrippa and Assault Squad Aeolus surged forward and after landing ran gaining the cover of the Crater nearest the Ruins on the Militias left flank. Tactical Squad Octavian also advanced making a power armoured run following the Chaplain and Assault Squad.

Image

On Matt’s left the two speeders powered out of their high speed dash with Speeder Black moving into Flamer range of Squad White with Speeder Gold moving further forward in support. The Razorback moved around the ruins in order to bring its twin linked heavy bolters to bear on Squad White.

Image

White hot promethium fire engulfed Squad white burning 4 of them to cinders while the heavy bolters on the Razorback and Speeder Gold riddled 2 more with explosive rounds – despite this Squad White bravely held its position and Squad White’s Sgt thankful for his re-breather among the lung searing smoke prepared his Demo Charge (Jon rolled a 6 for the squads leadership giving them a leadership value of 10 and then subsequently passed the Ld roll).

Turn 3 (Jon):
Seeing the situation deteriorating badly Sire-Leader Tarl again activated his comm link: “Corvinus. Vren. Attack Now! Where the hell are you damn it?”

Still not moving, Chaos Champion Corvinus again activated his alternate comm channel and snapped his own commands down the link “+++VREN. WAIT. FOR. MY. COMMAND+++”. Again a simple double click acknowledged his order and both squads held firm.

Seeing no sign of his flanking units, Tarl snarled and took out his rage out on the retreating Squad Red. “Advance you cowards. Attack them you dogs. You useless scum.” Fearing their leaders wrath, Red squad back tracked and moved back towards the advancing Assault Marines.

Image

Red’s Squad Leader hefted the Demo charge and cringed as it exploded harmlessly. However Lasgun fire, Frag Grenades and Frag rockets from Squads Red and Black as well as fire from the Command Squad scythed down Veteran Sgt Aeolus and 2 of the Assault marines leaving an even more furious Chaplain Agrippa and a Flamer totting Assault Marine.

Image

Still singing the battle Hymn, both Marines fearlessly prepared to ‘purge’ the heretics. On the other flank Squad Whites Squad leader surrounded by fire, smoke as well as the dead of his squad hurled his Demo Charge at Speeder Black only for it to ‘bounce off’ and explode harmlessly in the nearby ruins. Still recovering from the shock of being nearly burned to a crisp the rest of the Squad missed the Speeder with their shots.

Image

Turn 3 (Matt):
Speeder Gold seeing its consort more than able to handle the survivors of Squad White hugging the edge of the Militias deployment zone sped around to draw a bead on Squad Black. Meanwhile Chaplain Agrippa suddenly realized that he had taken a wound to his left leg, such had been his battle rage he had not felt a thing (Matt Rolled a double 1 for his terrain test). His vision seemed to go a hint of red and everything seemed to slow down as he launched himself towards Squad Red. The Flamer equipped sole surviving Assault Marine split up from him in an effort to flank Red Squad and the Militia’s command unit. Tactical Squad Octavian continued to follow up behind. On Matt’s left the Razorback’s custodian hit the accelerator and the light tank raced flat out towards the Storm Daemon.

Image

A second dose of white hot promethium from Speeder Black incinerated Squad White’s survivors. Speeder Gold did not fare so well – its Heavy bolter only managing to chew up the barricade behind which squad Black was taking cover. Meanwhile the surviving member of Assault Squad Aeolus fired a gout of promethium into both Squad Red and Tarl’s Command unit killing 2 of each – while supporting fire from Tactical Squad Octavian ‘firing on the move’ claimed 3 more from Squad red –

Image

Both Militia units began to fall back, seeking escape from the death and destruction around them, but at that moment Judgment arrived. Chaplain Agrippa, like a vengeful whirlwind of death and destruction, like some elemental being from the Myths - hacked and slew his way through the remaining members of Squad Red – none of which could stand before his rightful vengeance – and in seconds the entire unit was torn to pieces. The last member of Squad Red, its leader, dropped his weapons and sunk to his knees and begged for forgiveness. The blood splattered Chaplain smashed the traitors head in with a single blow before raised his crackling Crozius to the storm above and roared his answer “+++THERE CAN BE NO FORGIVENESS – ONLY DEATH+++”.

Image

Running away as fast as he could with the 2 surviving members of his command squad following Sire-Leader Tarl ‘sobbing with fear’ suddenly realized that he had been betrayed.

Turn 4 (Jon):
Seeing the Militia’s left flank collapsing and the right flank totally destroyed with Sire-Leader Tarl running from battle like the coward he was, Corvinus decided that his task was done and while this battle was lost there were Loyalists to kill. Activating his comm link he contacted Varl. “+++KILL THE WARRIOR PRIEST.NOW!+++”. He then led his Squad from hiding, moving up behind the 2 Speeders as the Disciples advanced towards the Chaplain on the opposite flank.

Image

Feeling the Battle Frenzy leaving him Agrippa was preparing to chase down the enemy commander when he was spun around by a solid shotgun round. Las pistol rounds exploded across his armour and a krak grenade hit the Rosarius and the device failed with a ‘pop’. Another solid shotgun round smashed his bolt Pistol from his hand and then…more pain than Agrippa had ever experienced….then darkness as his suit pumped him full of pain blockers…..opening his eyes the venerable Priest realized that something was amiss. He was laying down for some reason – looking at the clouds – why was he doing that? – There was something else? – Something important? – firefly’s buzzed by above him – no not firefly’s – a meteor shower? – No? - Las bolts! - That’s it... las bolts... he looked to his left and saw the last member of Assault Squad Aeolus explode as a krak missile hit him. Lifting his head, which seemed to be heavier than normal, Agrippa looked down his body and saw, with dimming vision, the ragged still steaming ruin of his chest where the Melta blast had hit him. ‘Seen worse’ thought the Chaplain and was trying to recall ‘exactly where’ when blessed unconsciousness claimed him.

Image

On the other side of the battlefield Aspiring Champion Corvinus led his Veterans from hiding and they opened fire on the nearest Speeder riddling the stationary craft with bolter fire. Both crewmen were immolated when the heavy flamer fuel was hit by a Melta blast. The fire flashed back to the engines and both turbines blew out and the skimmer crashed to the ground, a burning wreck. However the Squads plasma gunner experienced a catastrophic overload and was killed when the weapon exploded.

Image

Turn 4 (Matt):
Seeing their brothers killed in Speeder Black – Land Speeder Gold powered away from the Chaos marines and towards the Storm Daemon objective intent on exterminating Squad Black. Veteran Sgt Renius, suddenly realizing that he was now in command, ordered his Squad’s Razorback to accelerate across the battlefield determined to exterminate the Militia and avenge Chaplain Agrippa and his brothers who had fallen this day.

Image

Speeder Gold opened fire on Squad Black blowing apart a single Renegade. Squad Invictus also engaged the renegades but their shots missed or hit the cover. Squad Octavian elected to carry out a make or break dash for the Storm Daemon objective.

Turn 5 (Jon):
The disciples, flushed with their ‘kill’ of the Chaplain, chased after the marines of Squad Octavian in an effort to stop them reaching the objective. On the other flank Squad Corvinus ordered his squad to halt and engage the last speeder. Squad Black nervously held their positions while their commander Sire leader Tarl regrouped and moved back towards the Storm Daemon objective. Opening fire Squad black fired an anti-tank rocket and krak grenade at the Razorback stunning the crew. Squad Corvinus riddled Speeder Gold with bolter fire before blowing it to pieces with an accurate Krak Missile.

Image

Firing from the hip the Disciples riddled squad Octavian with Grenade, shotgun, Melta and laspistol fire but only a single Marine succumbed.

Image

Turn 5 (Matt):
The custodian driver of the Razorback, struggling for control after the anti-tank hits, drove the vehicle straight at the objective. Sgt Renius roared at his squad to deploy, shouting the unit’s battle cry of “+++HONORIS CAUSA+++” as he led them from the APC. Squad Octavian moved forwards in support.

Image

All 3 Tactical Squads opened up on Squad Black sweeping it away in a hail of bolter rounds and promethium fire. The 2 survivors staggered from the flames and ran from the battlefield throwing away anything that might slow them down.

Image

Turn 6 (Jon):
Sire leader Tarl, almost crying with rage and shame, staggered towards the remains of Squad Octavian as did the Disciples. The Chaos Marines stood still and Aspiring Champion Corvinus laughed at the storm laden sky....

Image

...his Missile Launcher equipped Marine on the other hand fired a krak missile at the Razorback leaving a nasty smudge where the munitions failed to damage the tank. The Disciples and the Command Squad riddled Squad Octavian once again killing a single Marine. Screaming with a mixture of rage and fear Sire leader Tarl charged the 3 survivors of Squad Octavian. One of the renegades was ripped apart by a close range volley of bolter fire and another marine managed to duck aside from what should have been a devastating blow from the sire leader’s power fist. Still screaming his hatred Tarl refused to run again and both squads remained in combat.

Image

Turn 6 (Matt):
Squad Renius consolidated their position around the Storm Daemon while the Razorback moved back to block LOS from the Chaos marines.

Image

The 3 marines of Squad Octavian closed around Sire leader Tarl and shot the Renegade commander apart as he was still screaming obscenities. The remaining member of his command squad tried to run but a burst of bolter fire caught him in his back blowing him apart. The heavy bolters of both the Razorback and Squad Invictus opened fire on the Disciples, but neither managed to find their targets.

Image

Turn 7 (Jon):
The Disciples moved up again trying to finish off squad Octavian while again Squad Corvinus stood still.

Image

The rocket from Squad Corvinus missed while the Flamer Marine and a Bolter marine from Squad Octavian were ripped apart by fire from the Disciples Squad leaving Sgt Octavian as the sole survivor.

Image

Turn 7 (Matt):
Squad Renius left their cover and advanced towards the Disciples. Sgt Octavian on the other hand moved to claim the Storm Daemon Objective.

Image

Gunfire and flamer bursts from Squads Renius and heavy bolter fire from Tactical Squad Invictus and the Razorback sweeping through the veterans killing 9 of them leaving just Disciple Leader Vren who heroically held his position.

Image

=============================================

With that Sgt Octavian looked down at the mewing Storm Daemon, the green streams of magic lashing the heavens hurting his eyes. “Die Spawn” he snarled and emptied his entire bolter magazine into the creature, spraying demonic ichor across the sandbags. Above the battlefield the unnatural storm began to abate. The battle was over and with the storm gone and their Thunderhawk detachment once again able to operate in support of 2nd companies’ Battle group; the Ultramarines have regained the initiative and are now poised to move on towards the capital city.

After battle reports
Matt
I took a big risk hugging so close to both edges knowing that Jon had units outflanking. However, it really paid off as the dice gods were not on Jon’s side and his reserves failed to turn up until turn 4 which really ruined his plans. That made it really easy for me to pick of the Militia units at will without worrying too much.

Agrippa will not be commanding any troops for a while and is currently spending time in a field hospital served by an Apothecary with a questionable bedside manner.

I rolled Relentless for Squad Invictus – a real nice to have with their heavy bolter. They can now take the fight into the heart of the enemy. Squad Renius rolled the very useful Feel No Pain.

Jon
My choice to leave the 2 Elite Squads in reserve well and truly backfired – but I still think I was right to have done so (Matt had the ability to manoeuvre against them had I deployed them in turn 1). When they ‘did’ finally turn up the Disciples killed the Chaplain and the CSMs shot down the speeder. Sadly that was in turn 4 and those units had done their jobs already.

What heaped further scorn onto my plans was my inability to roll better than a ‘2’ whenever I penetrated the armour of Matt’s Razorback (3 times) with the shooting of my militia and both demo charges (that got used) just about deviated as much as they possibly could from their targets.

I certainly had the chances to stop Matt’s charge across the battlefield – just not the luck it seems!

I rolled Fearless for the CSM Squad Corvinus – hopefully they will turn up next battle!

That was great
"seen worse, trying to remember when" was awesome.
You guys certainly used the terrain well (I'd have just griped endlessly about the giant killing zone in the middle and lost if I were playing :) )
So just once again, the assualt squad.. landed T1 in dangerous terrain (no results listed) took off and landed in dangerous terrain turn 2 (no results listed) Turn 3 took difficult terrain and rolled a double 1...A bit confusing.. were they walking and running rather than flying?
But an awesome bat rep..well done all :)
Are you going to try to switch up to 5th ed smurfs mid way? - your army could translate fairly well as it currently stands IMO (strange that)
Poor wolflord (I still haven't seen outflank 'work' effectively yet.. I always end up just lost somewhere wondering why I decided to send my guys to where the battle wasn't)

Switch up to 5th ed = yes. Should represent the Ultrmarines now able to fly in more support equipment and more regular troops.

My assault marines jumped outside each crater and then ran in (so no DT tests...on the way in). Agrippa jumped into the ruins though.

Outflank worked great for me the other day even if it was delayed (which actually turned out ok in the end).

So you took them each time you left instead? :?
Do tell more how did outflank work for you.. (I tried having the shrike wing come in from a side for a laugh and just watched as the enemy moved (slowly) away from anywhere that might suffer them turning up :(

I suspect Martyn forgot I had a rhino full of tactical marines outflanking. He had a unit in ruins close to the edge of the board. I arrived, disembarked and flamed/boltered 15 DE warriors into pieces.

On the other side, the scout bikers had the movement and range to outflank and fire on targets much further into the board (to good effect.. you can still fire rapid fire blasts from the grenade launches at targets 24" in from the edge). I think outflanking and shooting might prove better than try to assault (if your opponent has moved out of assaultable range). Of course, that means he bunches up in the middle of the table and has less room to move (or has sacrificial units on the flanks).

I'm off on a course all next week and my parents are around Monday night so I'm not gaming. Following week I'm in the US... so no gaming. Week after that I still have painting to do before we can take more pictures (as does Jon...well Paul on behalf of Jon). So the next game (Mission 3) is penciled in for the 17th November (at the earliest).

Sorry it'll take so long :(

Although only KMB seems to have read this one! :P
