Tim's Tau vs Kate's Eldar - 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 5th Batreps

Got a batrep? Post it here

I really enjoy these bat-reports. You seem to have a lot of fun doing it, and you get to practice using your army on a lover points level, which is a good thing. One question.. are you extending your armies in time? or will you be staying at CP level?

And another thing. You should tell your wife she is a great sport, and I must say I envy you, Tim, for having a girl that will not only let you do this hobby, but even participates. I have yet to meet a girl witch actaully does that. Good for you!

cheers - im glad you enjoy reading them. :)

so far ive only done one proper one with notes and photos etc - the rest have been more like quick recaps. but yes, they are fun. :D

my Tau will be staying at CP level (it represents the survivors of a crashed ship stranded on an Imperial planet, so no reinforcements for them for a looong time :P). Kate's Eldar collection is worth about 1500 pts in total, but she is more comfortable with smaller games for now anyway. :)

ive got lots of ideas on the drawing board, and several projects on the go at various stages. ive written one 1500 pt PDF list and an 1850 AdMech list (using C: IG and C: WH respectively), but these are a long way off (and by the time im close to finishing them i will have had to adapt them to new Codex books), and i also have a 1500 pt SM list written that is on hold. the rest of my lists are limited to 400 pts, simply because if i tried to build a full army for all the forces and factions i want to represent, it would be totally impractical (money, time and space). instead im content to distill my ideas down to small forces that capture the feel and the theme of what im trying to achieve.

that way i get to try out a lot of different things and chase a lot of ideas. :D

dont worry mate - not a day goes by when i dont tell her how lucky i feel and show her how greatful i am. :D

its a two-way thing too: shes gotten me into TV shows and films etc that i would never have thought to try without knowing her (i have someone to play 40K with, and she has someone to curl up on the sofa with to watch soaps :P).

cheers :)

p.s. incase you were wondering how i got her hooked: it was Space Hulk.

I'm sorry I can't resist (even though my moans now cover 3 threads (mods do delete if required)
Tim doesn't play at a higher points level (how long has it been since the guard at 1000+ came out btw?).. haven't you be reading my nagging (petty points raised repeatedly in protest) against his only ever micro gaming.
It skews the abilities of some units, distorts the ability of races and encourages minimum requirement unit lists (not to mention the space issues and the afforded luxury of being able to stare at a rules point for ages because it is the whole game, whereas in a 1000 or above you'd call it stalling  )..and those are just the dribbling kneejerk points..wait until I am lucid enough to raise better ones

On the more relevant and positive side..I find it incredible how much you two have leadership issues in your army..it still comes down to leadership and who may or may not fail when and where..I (not just in CP but in full games) find Ld tests to be almost always irrelevant (auto passes\fearless\ LD10, or people on 8 being lucky, Mr6 can make (after modified) LD5 most of the time)...Its strange to see it playing such a big part in your games (its good..but i think my lot need the 5th ed changes :D )

It has always been the prerogative of half-wits and fools to point out the Emperor has no clothes, but the Emperor remains the Emperor, and the half-wit remains a half-wit.-The Sandman (The friendly ones)

before Seth was born, at least (although i was borrowing Kate's Eldar at that stage anyway as my gunline Guard had gotten boring).

there are other considerations though (on top of cost, time & achievability to build, and storage space): a CP game has plenty of room on our 4' x 4' gaming table, and can be finished between the time we put Seth to bed and when we sit down to watch our TV programs. plus we can fit both our forces in a single GW figure case (inc. rulebooks, lists and templates) with room to spare (which will come in handy this summer), and when we go to meet other gamers, we will be able to get many more games into a day, which means we get to play more different people.

im not saying CP is "better" than bigger games, its just that its right for us right now. :)

yes, i was thinking about that the other day actually. :)

i think its because we have:
- no Fearless/Ld10/ATSKNF troops
- Pinning weapons on both sides
- small units (more likely to take 25% casualties and to drop below half strength)

also, my Markerlights should help Pin units too, but in practice they rarely seem to make a difference (its usually just a -1 penalty).

its just because of the army match-ups and composition really. when i get my 1KSons or AdMech Marines put together (for example) it will probably be noticeably different when they hit the table. ;)

but yeah, it is cool. :)

cheers
