Often though that can be fixed with explosives. For instance the Daisy Cutter (BLU-82) can create a good sized LZ and was used for that in Vietnam.

The cost of say a melta bomb would be less than the material costs of building such a facility.

I guess this is a rule of cool issue.

Iconic wise return of the jedi that landing pad by ewokville is put above the ground isn't it?
If you landed on unstable shifting sand dunes presumbaly you'd suggest super heating to make a solid? That would be more cool..I guess oil rigs are just easier in our brains (and to sell)

What got me thinking was I was going to try to build my own landing pad and I like the old one (looks like a pizza dish) that GW used in photos. I was going to put an elevator in because you have to be able to move the cargo off and to the camp. I was thinking of having that like the elevators on an aircraft carrier where it is basically a large lift that moves planes from the hanger to the flight deck.

This is one in action bring up an S-3 and an F/A-18.

I started thinking about why the US military doesn't build platforms and then realized it is just easier to have it on the ground. No climbing ladders to get to the aircraft. No difficulty in getting fire fighting equipment to it in the event of a crash or malfunction. No weird logistics in trying to rearm.

This in a game with giant bugs, killer bipedal fungus, Elves in Sppaaacce, and chainsaw swords. I need to just accept it. LOL

My wife suggested an ornithopter instead of the balloons. The said the cockpit should look like a giant brass eagle head (bugger all if I know how to build that) and with exposed pistons to pump the wings up and down.

How about something like...

You could scratchbuild something like this relatively easily, I would have thought and differing types/sizes could be valks/vendettas to chimera's/russ/hellhounds etc.

Check out lego propeller blades on e-bay for them.

I have a metric butt tonne of LEGO blocks so I think I am good on the props.

That is a nice find. Thanks.
