Air Mobile Vostroyan Army

Postby Ben » Wed Oct 14, 2009 12:51 am

I was thinking of making my Vostroyan force an Air Assault force.

Naturally I can't have my Vostroyans with these

So I want to build something like this

This would be for the Vostroyan "Valkyrie".

For gunships I would have them enclosed like the one in the distance here

What do you guys think? Too over the top?

In 40K, nothing is too over the top! I think it would be great, especially for the voystrans.

That is from the game Wizard 101. That particular world is Marleybone which is Victorian era (Steampunkish) London only instead of people they are all dogs. Hence Marleybone instead of Marylebone and there are sites like Wolfminster Abbey Barkingham Palace.

Here is a shot of Sherlock Bones next to my life wizard.

I am thinking of using a balloon to shape my balloon and then just paper mache over it like a pinata. I will pop a Vostroyan pilot in the pilothouse. The basic shape I am thinking wood just because I have so much plywood sitting in my woodshop. I am going to make floors on mine wooden like a battleship deck and put a lot of brass on it. I am looking for some really ornate dollhouse pieces to dress it up because I imagine anything the Vostroyans build will be like that.

A perfect oppurtunity to work with balsa and lolipop sticks, will the under carriage be the valk and the balloon not count for true LOS (you'd be make something that would always be 60% visible)- or does that fit with the whole long stem thing.
I think its an awesome idea.. but you'll need a wind mage on board if your going to say it can go as fast as a super sonic future jet. :D (Mummy 2 they have turbo jets on the back of the balloon, also there is 3DMark06 where one vid is a turbo boosting setup as you describe getting away from a water dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbWHerQskxk (2min 40ish of this)

If you simply explain that the gas bags are self sealing and nothing short of a direct volcano cannon hit will actually "pop" the balloon, then it kind becomes less of a target. Alternatively, have the hull down low, and the balloon start at about the height of the normal valk when its on its base. That way you have the balloon as the actual target instead.

This site has links for free printable card models of airships at about 13" long that might help with a more streamlined ballon than papier mache. You could then add your gondola with valk engines underslung on cables.
I can't wait to see how you get on with this build. Doll's house bits are always a bit large for 28mm imho but I'd love to see chandeliers in the cabin, mahogony and brass

I am not worrying about explaining the speed. After all soldiers (IG, not aliens or genetically enhanced) can move 6 inches and if running they can move 12. To move 12 I just have to move as fast as a running soldier in all of his gear. ;) To move 18 doesn't seem like such a stretch to me. LOL

If I make the gondola real big (Valk size) I could just say treat the balloon as a banner and consider it not part of the model I guess. I don't see it being an issue either way since this is really just me building some stuff. There are no 40K opponents in my city that I have found and I don't care to cart everything up to Birmingham (the Alabama one) to play since I will spend as much time driving as I do gaming.

General Lee, what do you think about brass fish hooks. Lash 6 together with the hooks curling out from the center. I cut off the dangerous bit with a wire cutter and glue a little paper lampshade. That would help better adjust for the size I need.

Not sure why, but I have the image of zeppellin style balloon, gondola with paddle steamer wheels!

I haven't seen the Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow but I hear there is a flying aircraft carrier in that movie. The wheels are turning.

Do you recall how it stayed aloft? I am guessing rotors down in the clouds like an upside down helicopter.

Pass, to be honest its a bit of a snoozer of a film.. the valiant (in doctor who http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1czVhlgAHi8) uses giant turbines, this is used as a plot device because the air is being filled with poison and it descends, pushing the air away, so that the elite forces of unit can take off their breathing apparel ready to charge down the sontarans :D

The Valiant looks pretty cool.

Speaking of thinks that difficult for difficulty's sake...why is it the Imperial landing platform is raised off the ground? Seriously. It makes is more difficult to load and unload and makes the aircraft on the pad a better target.

Imagine landing on a planet like LV 14 (whatever that one in aliens with buttloads of pointy ass harder than nails 40 ft high rocks) clearing 7 support struts is easier than clearing 40metres square.
By the time you'd scraped the whole ground clear enough to lay the tarmac you'd have already lost the beans and bullets war..terraforming is not an imperial mandate
(bit tipsy..do take as overly serious with a silly smile :D)
