Heh, I live within the sprawl of Birmingham, it's hardly farmland :P

My road is like a letter b (well more like a capital B with a tail, but for now let's pretend it's a b as it's simpler). The tail is the bit that connects me to the nearest main road (imagine a spider leg connected to the tail of the b, at the end of the leg opposite spider is one of the main roads from the M42 to the centre of Brum, the others are small roads and the body is a roundabout). Take that b, and put bend it where the tail meets the loop. From the side, the tail is horizontal, and the loop is angled down at around 40 degrees. My house is halfway down the straight part of the loop.

As of right now, the b is an ice rink covered in snow. The spider is little better, being frozen slush and ice. Even the main road isn't clear - there are two ruts where the tarmac is just about visible, the rest is frozen slush.

As it is, the tail of the b is very useful - off licence, 3 small convenience stores, fish & chip shop, indian takeaway, hardware store, and a few other shops that I don't go in (hairdresser, aircon sales, charity shop, launderetter). So long as delivery trucks can get through the spider, at least we won't be going short of provisions. I'm half tempted to see if the hardware store has snow chains in stock :)

I hear winter tyres are where its at.. get some rims from scrap yard stick winter tyres on them, stick them on your car dec to feb.(anytime its likely to be under 8 degrees IIRC) A few of my friends living in wilds of X swear by them.

I don't think snow chains are allowed? (whereas in some countries the burden is if you had an accident snow chains would have stopped you are automatically at fault, we don't and you get in trouble unless you can prove your entire journey was over a covering thick enough to prevent any wear and tear on the road....which is a pretty demanding standard for anywhere outside certain bits of snow covered farm land in scotland :) )

Suggest nearly entire thread moves into an existing snow thread

Back on topic, no as I'm at work all over that period, and to bring it back to snow, I wouldn't drive that far in this snow anyhow. Its sheet ice on the roads and it's just started snowing again. We are due a heavy fall sadly.

Saw on the news this morning that you lot are getting hit with yet more snow.
Everybody okay? (I hope)

Another 2 inches this afternoon here, but at least it meant we left work early at 4pm. With the help of my wife and 2 blokes with spades from down the road my car is however now on level ground :D I don't think I could manage another 4 mile hike to work in the morning, my knees are in agony.
