AoS Tournament August 2009 - PRIZES TO BE WON!!!

Postby Ljundhammer » Tue Mar 03, 2009 9:20 am

For those not keeping up with events, this tournament will have prizes for First, Second, and Third places, brought to you by your sponser, Gaming Figures.com

The latest draft tournament pack is now attached to this message.

There's been some rumblings from the unwashed masses that a 'mini tournament' could be a good idea for the August 2009 meet up.

Registration

If you are interested, please reply with 'I'm in' or whatever & I'll update this first post on an irregular basis.

Entries so far:
Definate:
Ljundhammer
KMB
Taumaul
KIng
Baragash
Spack
Simon
Mr6
Mark (jb)
Lord Malek
Antubis

That's a quorum of 8 (including tentatives) which is my minimum number. Huzzah!

Please don't think that the challenge is closed - anyone can still join - either as replacements, or as new players (depending on how the tentatives feel...). in summary entries are open until 31 July (or later if you really want to enter!) in order that I can make sure that we are completely sorted on the Saturday morning.

If we get enough interest then:

Da Rulz (UPDATED)

In order for this not to take up the whole weekend this will be a knock-out competition. This means that you could play one game, or up to 4 at a maximum depending on the results.

The bare bones are:
Points: 1500, 1 FOC
Time limit for game: 2 hours
Rules disputes: UKGT FAQ (the latest copy) will be in force, along with current GW FAQs - overriding rule will be act your age
Codexes which can be used: all GW 'official' codexes as per the UKGT & any others that are released between the last UKGT & our tourny, FW armies are allowed (eg Red Scorpions, or Death Korps) using the latest rules (whichever they are). Forgeworld models are allowed - but are to be discussed with the entrants & organiser as to which you may be bringing (I realise that most FW are overcosted & fun & fluffy, but a small number are not well playtested). Note that flyers (as oppossed to skimmers) are not allowed.
Timing: depends on number of rounds - I'm assuming 3 rounds can be done on Saturday, the final can be on Sunday if needed
'Soft scores': None
Armies: Minimum of undercoated - I'd like it to be fully painted, but I appreciate that there are constraints on people's time!
Prizes: Bragging rights :D

With 8 entrants the games will run as follows:
Round 1: random draw to be made on Saturday morning
Semi-final: we will have 4 winners - these will be matched in the semi finals (the higest victory point winner will play the lowest, the other 2 will form the second semi final)
Final: the 2 winners from the semi finals will face off

Missions will be randomly generated at the start of each round. Winners will be determined through the normal mission victory conditions. In case of a tie - VPs will be used.

Now FIGHT!

I'm in/interested..
Still figure if the numbers of folks just generally interested goes up you fellas being seeded might be a good idea for games ratio and matching opponent levels.
Are we C-blocking it with our toughest lists, the ones you'll be be GTing with etc. Or will it be new lists all round?
Do I bring roxxers, paper (as in rock/scissors advisorys) or honourable mention? I think that depends on what other people want to get out of it (don't want to infect nice shy gamers who aren't used to such things with roxxeritus)

im tentatively interested, but it all depends on how competitive my Zombies list turns out to be once it hits the table (dont want to waste everyone's time if it is a walk-over).

if we have a Knock-out tourney, everyone who gets knocked out is going to be looking for another game anyway - is there any way to arrange something where the losers play eachother to determine their rankings (so you have a 1st division winner/2nd/3rd place and a 2nd division winner/2nd/3rd place too)?

We could, but if we are going down that route, we may as well run a league. I'm happy to do it that way, or as you suggest.

I was going to suggest that we do it for a '3rd place play off'. What I'm trying to avoid is to have people playing in a 'tournament' (no matter how friendly) that they have no chance of winning (for example a 4 game tourny where you lose the first 2 games) it saps the fun from the later games & leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I think getting beaten to a bloody pulp by Nigel or Gav, then having a few friendly games with other who have likewise been knocked out should prove to be more fun.

That's only my opinion though, so I'm glad to hear yours & others suggestions.

I'm unsure about seeding - how do we adjudge who gets seeded where objectively? If anyone has thoughts let me know.

As to 'nasty' lists. I'm happy to include soft scores if anyone can tink of a way to do it.

I'm going to sleep on it...

a walk over, i don't mind, i'll play Tim ;) Come on Tim, it doesn't matter, ;) people won't care if they get an easy win, and will expect a hard game, so either way you can't loose... well you can but not in the way I mean.

the only way that can be done is everyone plays an even number of games... so then ur o be looking at the same format as the GT and playing tourney games all weekend. 6 games of tourney play.

while i do like my GT tourneys, i also like the relaxed approach of the AoS weekend, and would rather opt for the knock out, with just a 1st and 2nd place, allowing me to go play some other games with a diff list/army.

As for prizes: bragging rights, how about AoS/GF putting up a small prize and maybe some token to keep. I won't specify at the moment, in fact I may just make it a suprise. ;)

To help Ljundhammer have a think on its format
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament ... ournaments
http://www.chessboss.com/chess_tournaments.php

The GT is a swiss variation i think
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_system_tournament

knockout does sound simpler :)

If we're playing for fun and it ends up being a league knockout... you could have people who on paper are linked. They progress under the same banner (e.g. "Sad cow and cold one"). but Play seperate games and operate in a completely seperate manner .. but on paper they're scores are matched up.
Then it all comes down to pairing and friendship. Your mate loses 2 games dragging you out too.
Then it all comes down to pairing with someone of vaguely the same talent and list..
I think this is what they do in happy gilmore when Bob barker ends up decking him.
Adds a friend element to it, makes it a bit more complex. its not a doubles tournament.. but it has some of its good points.
(Am i just a crazy cracker or what??)

if its kept simple (FA cup style) with numbers and a draw before hand (I suggest a hat and a web cam that spack sticks up   ).. Some folks can get in their first round early (Assuming that some folks will only be turning up saturday etc)

We ran a double elimination tournament in my golf club. I found this link;
http://jobu.netfirms.com/tbb/
it lets you download a bracket program. You can set up a single or double elimination tournament bracket.
What do you think Ljundhammer?

Looks good! It can also be set up in a double elimination format, or a 2nd tournament from the first seed losers leading to a 2nd palce winner.
Many variations are possible. Glad you liked the program, I found it quite some time ago.
Worked well for a golf tourney (I didn't win though, I guess there was a minor flaw in the system  )

That's what I was thinking. KISS never fails me.

I tried to look at the double one TW, got confused - I'm a simple man! Golf is made to confusing - what's wrong with hitting a ball into a hole with a stick?

So do I take it that Timewizard, King and Taumaul are in?

Not me I'm afraid.
I hope the day comes when I can travel across the pond and meet the other AoS members at a WHW meet up. Unfortunately, unless I win a lottery or something, this is not the year.
Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts though! And I'm glad the tournament program works.

Hmm... I'm undecided TBH. I don't usually like playing tournaments. I might give it a go though.

The meet-up is definitely August is it? I thought we were not going to find out until early this month what WHW could do for us?

im not normally a tourney player either, but considering the whole crowd will be AoS people, i think its a bit safer than normal. ;)

its not been confirmed, no - but since its supposed to be an annual event, and the last one was in Aug, we are referring to it as that by default. :)

there are a good couple of reasons why folks who don't normally tourney should play
1) Its not £50+ (thats the big one for me)
2) This is the 3rd meetup most folks know each other and so although for example I sometimes don't act my age.. I would also be a bit embaressed to start pulling some waac crap.
3) You can dip your wick in, and its over after 4hours- 2 games. Then you can tick that little life experience box.
4) those who don't ever tourney- see it as a time for a different kind of list.Make yourself something funny and cruise control it.. you never know you might win doing something like that.
5) Its a good way to break the ice.I haven't played Cgra, simon, zipperfish or a whole bunch of others.. and now I have a roster of rivalries in my intray that prevent me half the time from playing them (e.g. vs king is enshrined in law now, and although I've played Tim twice I still owe him 1 particular sort of game etc) Its good to break the habit and play some other folks. And for the shy gamers a good way to end up stuck opposite someone and to realise they are quite pleasant.
6) Jellybabies, if I'm worried about whether I'm being mean I douse opponents in good will sweeties.
7)If you turn up and your facing 3 landraiders and you only have str 7 gunline.. you can just declare and go off and watch bloodbowl/other entertaining event if you want.
