assembling Nids

Postby Stunty » Mon Sep 28, 2009 6:50 pm

Hey guys.

I had planned on starting to assemble my nids but I am a bit unsure of how to go about it so would like some advice please.

1. Im magnetising my larger beasts but stealers and the like how important is it to have the correct biomorphs displayed on the model? as I dont want to have to buy 100s just to I cover all bases and I don't think I have the strength in me to magnetise everything (not even sure its possible).

2. Is it worth assembling models now with the new codex looming and biomorphs more than likely changing..

1. Much has been made of WYSIWYG, but in my battles with my friend, we don't hold too strictly to it. It's just too expensive to try to have models with every conceivable option. Magnetizing the larger beasts is a good option. I have also "blue tac"ed some options on my models for a game. Most of the time though, we just exchange lists (or at least disclose what each model has) and play on from there. We've even used a land speeder base to "count as" an Necron Lord on a destroyer body. So I don't think it's necessary to magnetize everything (especiall for 'nids).

2. If you've waited this long, another couple of months probably won't hurt. Bear in mind also that as the codex release gets closer, more and more details will get 'leaked'. I've got my Tyranid army on hold for now, was concentrating on my marines. Looks like I'll have something new to work on come January! :D

There's my 2 cents (pence?).

I would hold off if possible at this point. You simply don't know what changes are in store.

magnetise the weapons on the larger beasts. (warriors upwards). WYSIWYG wise, weapons should be on the model. Stuff like adrenal glands could be internal, and things like scuttlers don't have to be modelled. However, your opponent should be left in no doubt as to what everything is equipped with, so clearly state if anything isn't shown on the model.
As an example, I've played against an army that had 3 warriors armed with deathspitters and scything talons, no biomorphs on the model. during a critical part of the game it turns out they in fact had talons, rending claws, leaping and associated combat biomorphs. A unit of mine I thought safe was well in charge range and got wiped out, allowing him to follow up into another unit. For some reason, my opponent thought it was okay to simply write it down on his list and not actually bother to tell me.

I'd assemble big stuff with magnetic weapons now, but leave off biomorphs. These can be stuck on later. Gaunts are more tricky. We won't find out which weapon options are best (if the writers done his job correctly, then none of them will be 'best') or which suit your play style until the codex is released. If you are easy going with your army then just use the ones you like the look of. If your a hard core tournie player, wait for the book.
One thing though: grab a couple of the current battleforce boxes. They are being delisted and will no doubt be replaced with contents that are not as good a deal. Currently, the carnifex is almost free.

Personal opinion - depends on where / who you play. If you are a tournament player then it's worth doing it because you'll lose points / be disqualified because of the rule. Fair enough - but then won't you be practice playing and refining a list for the tournament, so you'll know exactly what biomorphs to use won't you.... :)

On the other hand our club isn't too fussy about wysiwyg and I hate wysiwyg facists. Don't get me wrong - a certain amount of wysiwig is necessary -

'That coke can is a dreadnought, that shoe box a landraider and my marine captain is that matchbox - oh hang on where'd my dread go - oh- damn Chris is drinking it!'

That just isn't any fun. However the current nid models show just how stupid the rule is in general.
'Err - is that funny blobby thing an adrenal gland, an enhanced sense or a poison sac? Oh - sorry my bad - it's a glue blob.... Hang on - your glue blob isn't the correct biomorph - your'e cheating by not WYSIWIG'ing and I'm not playing you any more.... WAAAAAAAHHHHHH WANNA BICKIT.'
Sheesh. (Now let's roll out the argument about the size of a marines crack grenades.....)
Lifes too short. Swap lists, be open and get on with having FUN. :P :D :D
