Best Pretorian Force

Postby Ben » Sat Sep 26, 2009 2:54 am

I have quite a few Pretorian HW teams I picked up at the store that time forgot. They are nifty figures but I was wondering what is the best way forward. Should I pick up those plastic British soldiers from the Zulu wars, the metals from Old Glory, or try to get the GW ones (at some cost)? I am leaning toward the Old Glory figures since I like metal but either of the first two can easily be used for historical wargaming so I would get more use.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean the vitrix (think that's the name) ones?
I had a look at some in a local and thought they were really nice, lots of bits for mucking about with/variation and cheap!!!

I think they would make a nice guard army, flintloquelas to the fore, volley fire!!!
Victorian style "steampunk" vehicles, etc would be excellent!

Not sure how cheap/available they would be, but mounted officers look cool.
I've done this with my company commander and commissar lord, the arrogance level looks truly astounding!

I envy you that store, Ben, I really do!

Wargames factory do multipart plastic colonial British.

If your after metals, forget Old Glory and go for either Rapier Colonials, or Empress Miniatures.

I like Empress's officers, but prefer the Rapier rank and file.

Maybe have a look at the Perry Miniatures Sudan range.

All metal but they come at 6 for £6.
Also Camel cavalry.

I keep forgetting Perry do late Colonials, I still associate them with Foundry for that era!

I was thinking actually of the Wargames Factory set. They are multipart plastic and cost $15 for 20 minis.

I have been working on my Vostroyan army being Steampunk so with some proper magnet placement I may be able to get some double duty.

That is a good idea with the officers. I mean Space Wolves have Wolfy McWolf riding a giant wolf so surely I can have mounted officers.

Is there anything in particular that you want? I can look around for it if so.

Those are twice as much before shipping. I need to check on how the OG looks in person first. I love the cowboys and pirates.

That would be a very interesting. I will keep that in mind as well.

If you have the OG army card, then they are by far the cheapest. Otherwise they are 30 figs for $41 against 24 figs for $35 (approx with exchange rate at 1.6) including postage.

Personnally I am using Cadians with Topee helmets and gas masks as mine, but I doubt they would match the older Pretorian Figures as well.

Do you need old metal cadians? They have those at the store as well as old Catachans. How Catachans moved those wheeled HW teams through jungle I don't know. LOL

No, when I started on them I deliberately based them on the plastics. Do they have any old style rhino's though?

I will look. I think so though you may have to buy an old style Razorback or Whirlwind. Would that be okay?

They would be even better, especially a whirlwind. Old style Chaos Rhinos would be of use as well.

I will pop in and check it out. I can't promise today as there is a home game (Alabama vs Arkansas) but if I can't it will be tomorrow.

Here is my most recent find.

Sorry about the glare from the shrink wrap. I started to pick up the chaos space marines they had. I don't know when they are from but they have very old school weapons. I think they are $8 per blister of 2.
