Building a modular gaming board: Would Like you Input

Postby Jay » Sun Oct 28, 2007 6:10 pm

As a small project I've deicded to build a modular gaming board out of a bunch of cheap materials. When building this board I've got a few things that I must stick to make it work as intended, that is to be completely modular and easy to transport as well as being built on the cheap.

So far I've got my base sorted, 12 - 16 (depending on what size I want and what type of board) polysterine ceiling tiles glued to a pieace of thin MDF (equal to the size of the tile - 150cm) What I'm struggling with is keeping these tiles 'locked' in place without sticking them together permenatly - any suggestions?

What about hinges or magnets underneath, so they stick to one another, but can be unclipped for storage?

most modular boards are actually laid on another full size table.

Or based on this notion, some sort of non-slip mat, so the modules don't slip on the table, maybe scratching it, and if its a valuable dining room furniture saving you from harm.

I did a modular table years ago (with a friend who was into 20mm WW2).
The table was going to be 6x4. It was going to be made up of modular tiles, and it would incorporate terrain features into each piece. It therefore had to be sculpted and carved out of the foam tiles.

The tiles were 12"x12" and 1" thick. The highest point on the table was 4" and the lowest was 1/4". It had roads and a river with bridges and fords. It took us about four months of weekends to make it - carving, painting, flocking and varnishing and in the end got glued down to a board for a model train layout (after 5-6 years of use).

I'm doing a new one up made up of 15mm mdf. I'm getting a full sheet (8'x4') cut up into 4 4'x2' pieces. I have my plans done up, so that I can have roads and a river entering/leaving each board, and the boards can be line up in different places to change the layout - WD back in the mid 100's had an article on how to make one.
It's also double sided. Grey (urban) on one side and green (wilderness) on the reverse.

For a 6x4 table, I can use any 3 of the 4 boards together to give me my layout. It's also going to sit on top of a tabletop that is 6x4 with a rim to hold the other boards in place.
