Concerning Leman Russ varient models, how do they differ?

Postby mortiferum » Wed May 06, 2009 8:02 pm

I don't (yet) play Imperial Guard.

How do each of the Leman Russ varient tanks differ from each other?

I'm considering scratch building a Leman Russ tank (with magnetised weapon mounts so I can experiment / field all the varients).

Is it simply a dfifferent turret mounted weapon that dertermines which varient it is or are there other subtle differences (if so what are they) between the models?

The RRP price difference (£9.80) between the Demolisher and Battle Tank seem to suggest you get more that just a different turret weapon? I'm assuming both kits are all plastic (no metal components in the Demolisher kit, right)?

Cheers

Morty

Demolisher used to have metal that you would add to the turret to build up the armor, a new barrel and plasma sponsons.

I am not aware of that going to an all plastic model but I may be wrong.

Demolisher from the GW webstore wrote:This boxed set contains 1 multi-part plastic Imperial Guard Demolisher, and includes options for a Tank Commander, alternate weapons, wargear options and extra detail.

No mention of metal components? If it did indeed contain metal I could understand the price difference.

Maybe it was recut in plastic. I would have thought I would have read more on that since they hyped the Crusader going all plastic.

Externinator and Demolisher had different turret WEAPONS (and the dem had extra armour for the turret).
Demolisher had plasma and multimelta sponson weapons.

All of the changes were metal bits.

I heard that the Demolisher WILL be an all plastic kit.. The only "new" part of the LR will be the turret design.. Apparently.

So it is still part metal currently but at some point will go all plastic?

Historically, the Demolisher has had extra armour over its engine compartment, at the back, as well as more armour on the turret. Few people notice the engine armour, so you could probably do without it (or include it on a normal Russ as well). Really, you just need to swap the turrets, and have the right sponson weapons (and this is easier IIRC now that the normal Russ has more options in this regard).

hope that helps :)

This does help, thank you :D

So are all turret options available to purchase via GW and or Forgeworld?

Heres what I've found:

Battle Tank - Forgeworld / GW
Exterminator - Forgeworld
Vanquisher - Forgeworld
Eradicator - does this exist?
Demolisher Forgeworld / GW
Punisher - does this exist?
Executioner - Forgeworld

I also found a Leman Russ Annihilator - whats this - could it be used as a 'count as' for the Eradicator / Punisher?

Yes, the Demolisher kit definitely has metal parts. The "current" kit has slightly different metal parts to the original kit, the gun barrel was redesigned and the armour size adjusted, but the all plastic Demolisher is still some way off from release.

The Exterminator not only had metal autocannon barrels, but it also included a metal heavy bolter hull weapon (completely replaced the lascannon).

Eradicator has no GW/FW turret yet, but looks like you could easily use a Hellhammer barrel (a lot of people might have these spare from Baneblade kits).

Punisher has no GW/FW turret yet.

Annihilator is from Imperial Armour Volume 5 - it's a twin-linked Lascannon.

Expect a few of the variants to have parts on the yet to be released GW Russ recut turret sprue (I've seen rumours about multiple barrels to be included so a few of the variants in the IG codex can be built from a single kit), others will probably have FW turrets released if they don't already have them. I'd also expect to see the Executioner turret redone as the current one is an RT/2nd ed style plasma barrel rather than the design seen on current plasma weapons.

You're also missing the Conqueror variant, which is from IAv1 and has a blast weapon with the same stats as the Exterminator and a turret from FW.
