Dark Angels Veteran Boxed Set

Postby Dorman » Fri Dec 05, 2008 4:56 pm

Just bought the DA veterans box from gamingfigures.com and whilst more than happy with the contents I couldnt help noticing that the contents are more than similar to the DA chapter upgrade sprue!!! It looks to me like the veteran box contains the upgrade sprue plus a tactical squad weapons sprue!!!

I feel your pain (in a manly non-sexual way, btw, TW), so, in order to assauge your suffering, you should send me all the torch/censer burner type things.

In this way lies the path to your salvation (btw, ALL da's are midgets, the pretence they are not is done with censor smoke and mirror blades).

Dorman, the DA chapter upgrade is just the vet sprue on it's own. Unfortunately that's all GW did for us DA players ...

from my experience (and all IIRC so check with MO to be sure):

DA Vet box = 5 robed marines + special weapons
DA Command box = 5 robed marines + special weapons + command stuff
DA upgrade set = 10 robed marines

if you dont need the special weapons or banner/narthecium etc, then the best way to get the robed marines is in the upgrade set.

hope that helps :)

O*Off Topic* Thank you for bringing a smile to me ruffian! It's been a hell of a month and I appreciate being in your thoughts (also in a manly, non-sexual way.) :D

On topic, sometimes GW merchanidse is not what it was supposed to be. Makes the little optimist in each of us buy more stuff hoping to get what we want.

its the same DA sprue you got in the Veterans box (5 robed marines, bolters, bolt pistols in holsters, accessories etc), but you get it twice (=10 robed Marines).

best double check with MO though, as i havent actually bought this one yet (Ben ordered it for me, but it was out of stock at the time so we cancelled it rather than wait) - this is what MO told me though (the details on the site were a bit sketchy, so i had them go and check for me after i read about it on Warseer).

cheers

marines vs DA

Postby Herne » Sun Dec 07, 2008 10:49 am

Let me start this post by stating that I am a DA fan - I love the fluff, have 4000pts + of DA's and am busy painting yet more to add. I did decide to compare the new marines with the DA's. So I wrote a list using the new marine book the other day. It was a simple list - couple of rhinos with tac squads, razorback with a small command squad and captain, couple of drop pods with squads of vets in and a LR with 5 termies in. I then compared it to an equivalent DA list. I matched the troop types as close as poss - e.g. DA vets for Vanguard and Sternguard etc. What I discovered I didn't like:

Marine list: 2045 DA list: 2135 - costs more in DA list

Tac marines - 10pts more for the same troops but DA's don't have the nice combat tac rules

Vets - Nice and punchy in DA list - lots of nice weapon options, but no options for relic blade on sgt - nearest equiv meant that he strikes last. ALso no nice ammo or special rules.

Command squad - apothecary rubbish in DA compared to new marines.

Drop pods more expensive as is razorback, and doesn't have the option for homer.

There were half a dozen other weaknesses I noticed too. Seems to me that there is absolutely no point taking the DA book now unless you want to take the specific lists - Deathwing or Ravenwing. The basic foot sloggers are now outclassed by 'vanilla' marines. Am I missing something?

i dont think you are, no. :(

i wouldnt recommend anyone to use the DA codex over the SM one unless they really wanted the things that you cant take in the SM list.

and thats even considering the fact that i would pretty much insist that they used the newer (C: SM) rules for 'previously identical' items at no increase in cost.

i noticed a similar thing with C: BA - unless you want the 'BA only' stuff, use the vanilla codex (its what ive done with the CP list ive written, where i didnt want Death Co. for fluff reasons, and i wasnt taking any of the other unique stuff due to points restrictions/game size). even at 400 pts you notice a big difference in what you can get into your list...

personally i think they should do an 'Angels of Death' mini-dex, containing add-on rules and special units/characters for both DA and BA to be used in conjunction with C: SM.

cant see it happening though. :(
