Vehicles could be glanced to death in 5th Ed as well, this isn't in itself an issue that has arisen through the new HP system - it's just more common because in 5th there was only a 50% chance of doing the equivalent of removing a HP with a glancing hit.

EDIT: did I technically just defend 6th Ed?! Man I feel so sullied now..... :(

Alright, I'll buck the trend. I play almost once a week. Played yesterday in fact. I agree that 6th is a bit messy, and some changes are pointless or silly. I'll be honest, we just ignore them by not using them.
Allies? I used them once with an inquisitor from the grey knight book. I don't normally have any points spare for allies.
Fortifications? Used the bastion a handful of times. Its the only one I own.
Challenges? Tend to get forgotten about.
Fliers? I don't own any, and the only others in the group are a BA stormraven and the two eldar FW fliers who haven't seen table time since before 6th ed!
Warlord traits? Usually forget to roll, and if we don't, get forgotten during the game.
Mysterious terrain? Nope.
And so on.
We generally cycle between the BRB missions and others from 3rd BRB/ 4th BRB, chapter approved, 3rd ed codexes, and cityfight. Next weeks game will be either 500pt patrols or a 1500pt game using the space marine 3rd ed codex 'Planet fall' mission, vs orks.

I voted very rarely play at FLGS, but realised I haven't played a pick up game for a few years now. The last FLGS game was a year and a half ago, when we hired the gaming room for a big summer apoc game (that only used the apoc objectives rules, nothing else.....).

My concerns now are that I'm being left behind on rules. I wouldn't know where to find the current rules for any of my tyranid gargantuan creatures for example. i've not actually seen the dark angels, dark eldar, tau, space marine, inquisition, battle sisters or daemons codexes (by that I mean never physically seen them, let alone read them!) hell, I'd only skim read the previous daemons book too. New apoc book? Not seen that either. No idea about the apoc supplements or anything really.
I wouldn't have a bloody clue going for a pick up game these days. To top it off, I'm having trouble remembering the 6th ed book. Its got too much unnecessary detail in it and its badly laid out. I'm forever looking stuff up. Flier rules? erm.... etc etc

still, we have our own little fun once a week. We've been playing orks vs orks for the last few months and its been quite a laugh.

I agree with Angelwing - if you ignore all the "6th ed" bits of 6th ed, it's quite good.

KMB & I played a good game a couple of weeks ago. 2500 points. We had no fliers, no challenges occured, we had limited, fluffy allies, and no psykers. It was pretty good.

Alas, that is unlikely to happen outside of a basement...

@ Baragash - glaning to death did happen, but in 5th Ed the risk was low. You could take 10 glances and be unscathed with good rolls. In 6th ed the best you can get is taking 3 glances (LR for eg), since on the 4th glance it's toast. Walkers generally 2, and the third kills. Skimmers are lucky to get more than 2 hull points. I kind of like the idea of gradual deteriation of the vehicle, I just think this method . . . well, it sucks to me.

@ KMB and Angelwing - nice idea to ignore the parts you don't like, but would it not then be easier to simply use an ed you do like? At least everyone will know the rules - I'm pretty awful at the best of times, but being asked to ignore this rule and that rule would just leave me a gibbering mess.

Current rule set is good:

Way less grey areas, most rules are clear.
Special rule set helps standardise the game a lot more.
Being able to target part of a unit in less cover I think is great.
Loving the addition of flyers, they rarely do anything anyways.
Would rather allies weren't in the game or the data slates or the fw approved (even though I have loads of fw) for the simple reason there's just too many rules / options to know.
Hate the wound allocation combined with lookout sir rolling.
Hate that FnP was reduced and poisoned shooting don't get rerolls for my DE. Lol

Vote that I play quite a lot still and am looking forward to playing on Saturday night again also. Chris will bring hi SM for my dark eldar to capture and torture. :)

oh I think 6th ed works well for small games, 1000 or below. It starts getting bogged down above 1500. Its no hassle wound allocating, challenging look out sir etc with small armies. It gets bloody tedious with large ones.
@Berger. Its more 'completely forget' than ignore really. One day i'll remember you can throw a grenade, or you can move a squad except the heavy weapon bloke and he doesn't count as moving. Stuff like warlord traits or mysterious objective effects also tend to be forgotten really quickly during the game (despite using the nice GW mysterious objective marker dice!).

My group plays smaller games 500 / 1000 / 1500 pts. Double force chart isn't used (and I'd ask that it isn't as it favours certain armies too much over the armies that need it at high point values) and points are normally too tight for allies or fortifications.
I'll also add my group is very soft. I'd think twice about using a leman russ against a couple of our players. Yes a a single leman russ, as I know it would be difficult to destroy and would smash loads of their army on average dice. I tailor my lists to suit certain opponents, to ensure fun games, not to crush them silly. Essentially this means the majority of 6th eds silliness simply doesn't happen in our games.
I know I could run my 500pt adeptus arbites using the citadel journal rules from 3rd ed and still have a reasonable game despite being overcharged for almost everything in the list. If I took it out into the wider world though it wouldn't stand much chance. I played Lord malek's 5th ed nurgle daemons for example and it was painfully obvious how outmatched I was.

@ Angelwing - yeah, most of my group are also tournament players, so their lists are pretty damn hard. They also prefer larger games, 2000+ pts, so there is quite a bit of FW stuff, and lots of flyers. And when you have seen half a squad destroyed by lots of swooping flyers, you really start to hate them. :)

Warlord traits seem to often get forgotten, and I know mysterious terrain can end up the same way. Some other rules probably too, but since I have not played for so long, I would miss quite a few rules!

I find the wound allocation is just painful - I cannot believe no-one else in the squad would think to pick up that melta gun, etc. And look out sir? Really? The guy has time to see the laser beam (travelling at the speed of light, maybe?), and then either warn the CO to move, or jumps in the way to take the shot themselves. It kind of works in WFB, with arrows, but not in 40K.

The problem will always be that no ruleset will appeal to all. I know some people prefer 5th ed, just as others prefer 4th, 3rd or whatever. I can wait a few more years before dipping my toe in again for 7th.

I failed to read all the options and double failed when I then read James's descriptions of the options AFTER voting.

So rather than rarely, I should change to never (at best very rarely).

I'm going to play my first full game of 6th next week vs BDA. I've only just finished reading the rulebook.

A huge lack of time and playing so many other games means some things had to take a hit. WHFB was swapped for KoW. 40K was more or less dropped by our group altogether. No real hard decision - we just stopped playing it as we picked up other things.

I love all the fluff and still read the BL books when I can. But now I'm not playing the games, you realise the huge investment you need to make in both time and money just to keep on top of it. These days, I can't be bothered with that. My time, money and energy goes on things I'm more likely to play (and others are too).

I play about once a month now, which is slightly less than I did before. I loved 5th ed, don't like 6th as much because of how its fundamentally changed the game. people moan about flyers, fortifications and allies, I don't really care as you can tailor your lists to meet any foe. my main moan is that In 5th I allways felt I had a chance in any game to win whatever army I took, in 6th I think theres types of armies that will never win. I play orks and I think that they are way overpowered against certain armies, im just waiting for the new codex to nerf them completely which it seems to have done with every army out there. DE are easier to kill, SM are marginally harder to kill but still no problem, chaos and tyranids don't seem to cause me any problems, granted I may have just been lucky but I cant think of any games I have lost with an ork gun line, the sheer number of dice pumped out mean I get you eventually. (obviously I haven't played elder or tau yet)
bigger games seen to be more popular as other armies need more points to bring all their 'toys' to the table but bigger games seem to get bogged down in ridiculous rule challenges and constant checking of the relevant rules, in my experience anything over 1500 points and I don't get to finish a game in an evening
so why am I still playing - simple, the last few games i have played have been stripped down, low points (no more than 1000) and 2 vs 2 with random allied groupings and they have been damn good fun. last game was 1000 points orks and 1000 points tyranids vs 1000 points SM and 1000 points chaos, no one was out of it till turn 6 and every one had a good laugh
simple fact is despite the many games out there (and I play a lot of them) I haven't found anything better that 40k for my futuristic gaming fix
I don't think I will ever leave 40k (i have too many bloody models now) and personally i would love to play 5th ed forever but 6th isn't all that bad, it comes down to how much fun you get with the people you play against, im lucky in that the people im playing against seem to have as much fun as i do, and in gaming terms they are relatively newcomers so we don't have the boredom factor that can creep into the game when its me vs you for the umpteenth time

i play most weeks down the local club and got to say i love 6th ed.

it has been really good with the rapid release of the new dex getting every one up to date and the options of fortification, allies and flyers have all brought things to the game.

a lot of people have complained that old combos dont work any more but they are just to set in there ways and cant be bothered to find news ways to play.

melee has fallen by the wayside a bit but that is fine cos this is sic-fi with zonking big robots and space guns. if you want melee play fantasy. :)

my only problem with 40k is that most opponents play space marines, they might come in different colors but they are all basically the same and rather boring. need more of the other races out there to make it more interesting.

I play when I can. I live in an area where the gamers are widely spread out and, until recently, the closest store to me was an hour's drive away. I only managed to make the gaming store once or twice a month, if that, to game. Now that a store has opened up 20-30 minutes drive from me, I may be able to make it more often if the 40k players will come out. If not, it's Warmachine/Hordes and Star Wars: X-Wing.

Despite the rules changes, I still love to play 40k. If I could, it would be the only game I'd play. While the others are still great games that I enjoy, I mainly play them to ensure I can get in some kind of wargame while at the store. While I know that the game has shifted towards shooting armies, I still try to find a way of running a close combat army successfully. It's a challenge that I continue to work on.

I'm quite luckly I think - Wife doesn't mind too much that I disappear once every month to play at a Tournament or spend a day at my mate's place for a game; plus I manage to go to two local clubs each week.
Armageddon Inc on Mondays, Wycombe Warband on Thursdays.

Must admit must of my games are moving away from GW, mostly playing FoW, Chain Of Command, Malifaux or Xwing.
With last week, this week and next - I'm playing WH40K 3 times in a row, most I've done in the last 6 months!

Next Year I think it will probably be no more than once a month of either WH30K with my Sons of Horus or Fantasy; all depends how Escalations & Fortifications fits in on a Monday night?
