Do you still play 40k?

Postby Ljundhammer » Wed Dec 04, 2013 9:29 am

Well, do you?

I'd count:
A lot as 1+ times per week
Rarely as 1-2 times per month or fewer
Very rarely as 1-2 times every 6 months or so
Never as not played in 6 months

You can answer as many as you like, but let us know what you put & why - especially if your playing has changed recently.

Poll open for 30 days.

Inb4peepsbetonmyresponse ;)

On that basis I had to put "never". I want to play a battle game set in the 40k universe, and I want to have a reason to put time and effort* into my models but the triple-combo of 6th Ed being a terrible game, the Chaos and Daemon books being terrible books and GW's "throw every rule we can think of chaotically at the wall and see what sticks whilst charging per sentence" means I just don't care.

*This may be a relative term ;)

Probably play about once every six months due to work and life getting in the way. Oh and having little or no space to play.

Lost intrest in 40K when the 6th Ed came out, my reason behind this is I feel that the use of allies make for easy power gaming and it now seems to use a lot of pshychic powers which I have never been fond of.
This is just my opinion and is not meant to offend the people who love the game, if you enjoy the game play it, if you don't find new outlets for your addiction

I play rarely at work - the Datacentre I work at as a conference room that we are allowed to turn into a gaming room when I stay over.

So if you peeps happen to be in Manchester of an evening... let me know!

Voted no never due to i haven't played a match of 40k since 5th Ed. I 'want' to play, but also am not willing to play with unfinished models. A holdover from my LotR gaming time, and none of my 40k stuff is done. My hobby time is cyclical in that I generally get obsessed in one thing and play that till a new obsession take its place and then eventually work in a circle back to older stuff I left behind.
The only "hobby" GW is interested in is lining their pockets with your money.

I lumped clubs in with home/ with friends. I play alot both at clubs and round peoples homes. I've played far less at GW than I used to partly due to travel and cost to get there, but mainly because one of the old managers drove off all the gamers I used to go and hang out with. I've heard the new on is cool, but I'm out of the habbit now.

I get far less games than I'd like these days and when I do it's he same few players on repeat. I regularly only get one oponant that can give me a run for my money (other exist in the area, but I don't get to play them often enough). The lack of a challenge has me wanting to play less and less.

Very few "old guard" players seem to have the ability to adapt to the new rules system and only look for the negatives in current GW releases. The "new guard" are more concerned with the latetest and greatest meta units forgetting compleatly that they need to know how the game and it's units work on a fundemental level first.

I can't say I have a fantastic knowledge base and I'd still consider my self a relative newbie. I do though still have the desire to learn and adapt both my army and tactics. The options that are now available to any and all players these days are awesome and it should mean that every game you find a new aspect and challenge.... At least you would if peoples enthusiasm and imagination hadn't stagnated.

I'd like more people to come back to 40k but most having only given it one or two games with old army lists and just had a brief glimpse of the rules (if that) have just jumped on the bandwagon of hate. I don't see many of them returning even in the next edition nevermind to play this one.

I need to widen my gaming circle and with my free time being limited it may mean my atendance at my current clubs and group get much less over the next few months. I used to enjoy being part of the hobby community and clubs but with such a huge wayne in enthusiam and often hostility towards my chosen system I'm finding it hard to care.

I guess what I'm saying is it's not the game that has me not playing as much it's the community!

Had to vote never. 6th Ed rules (random psychic powers / charge distances, allies, Flyers rules) and codices have really put me off, and I don't want to spend even more money on the pre-heresy stuff. Sold everything except my DA, and that's only because I have so much I could not bear to part with it!

Also, if they fix things in 7th ed, then I may go back. Never say never and all that. I would hate to have to paint another 6500 pts of DA if I sold all the stuff I have now!

This loss in my interest in, what was, my core game, has allowed me to discover there is actually a great set of games OUTSIDE 40K! So I have started playing other systems (FoW, Dreadball, Deadzone to name a few) and been looking at other, more "interesting" (read different) styles of game - Infinity, Warpath, Malifaux, MERCs, Dropzone Commander etc.

I'm with berger on this. I have played twice in the last 6 months - once with KMB, and once with a kid in our village.

6th ed holds no allure to me. I'm still loving the IP, so I'm now learning to play and starting to port Stargrunt 40k.

It's nice seeing the otyher gaming systems out there & I'm enjoying my gaming a lot. I do miss mid 5th ed when there was a good fun, and comptetitive 40k game to play & we played a lot!

EDIT - WHY IS THE POLL NOT WORKING!?!

M25th Ed had it's share of issues but broadly speaking IMO it had the best underlying base so far. An evolution of 5th Ed (in lieu of rewriting everything with scope-appropriate rules) would have been a nice step forward.

It's not like they did everything bad, I've been saying vehicles should have "wounds" for nearly 10 years........ *holds tightly to the straw*

I agree that the idea of "wounds" for vehicles could be pretty good, but the rules as they stand could have been better though. Land raiders being glanced to death really grates! I would prefer a proper damage system, where each time you are damaged, the risk of the vehicle becoming destroyed is increased. Glancing hits have a very small chance of causing damage at all, but more glances increasing risk, pens cause damage and more damage leads to increased risk of explosion. Might need a little work, but would probably be better than having your paint scratched a few times so the crew flee in terror!

I agree with Berders comments, I have played 40K from 1996 (2nd ED) up to last year when I found that just before 6th ED came out the armies that tending to win hands down were the ones with the lastest Codex. I made the decision that whilst GW produce some of the BEST models in the gaming industry I objected to the major ramp up of prices. That aside I still have about 3000 points of Space Wolves which I won't part with and may in the future return to the fold. Nowadays my gaming is taken up with Rapid Fire (WW2) using 15mm, Bolt Action and Star Wars X-Wing.
I don't want this to sound like a I HATE GW it is just my opinion and how I enjoy my gaming.
All I can say is "May The Force Be With You" :D

As I get older, work and family life gets more intense so, things like 40k take the hit. I enjoy the hobby so as a minimum I read the novels

I've voted 'Never'

I've been a long time collector but rarely played. This was due to circumstance rather than choice. I've always kept upto date with rules though, so could play. Not long after 6th was released, my circumstances changed and I was able to start playing 2 or sometimes 3 times a week.
But as has been said above, I too quickly came to despise random Psi powers, warlord traits, charge distance... etc as well as glancing vehicles to death...
Add this to the rediculus price hikes over the last few years.. I'm not a GW hater, I'm just struggle to justify buying/playing any more GW stuff right now.
I still have my Blood Angels, and a few Eldar things that I'm not getting rid of. So if things improve in the future..

I'd been toying with getting other brands, but had a misplaced sense of loyalty to GW. But 6th has given me the push I needed. Now I have Malifaux and Bolt Action. I'm also considering Dropzone Comander and Deadzone when it's released.
