GW Price Increase

Postby Ben » Mon Aug 25, 2008 3:02 am

Is this going to change your buying habits?

I switched to online a while back since I game at home now. The increase in metals (the models I like) means I will be buying less. I have already stared replacing some units. For instance, when I couldn't get Steel Legion after the Bitz reorg (since added back in US) I started buying Panzer Grenadiers at 10 for $8.

This may mean I am done with Sisters and Grey Knights baring great deals on eBay (or I somehow get a trade account for deeper discounts). I already decided it is only eBay for Vostroyans due to them shifting to direct only.

I am just curious if this is effecting anyone else? Naturally on Warseer it is doom and everyone is quitting or it is GW doing what they should because now Air Force 1's are $450 and bread costs more than last week.

I think it will. I'm with you I enjoy my GKs, but I'm not going to pay extra for them because they are metal. I think a need for a plastic shift has been long over due (judging from what I've read of GWs history and what not). I think GW is mainly justified however in their price increase, and I do think it's probably a decision made with quite a bit of trepidation. Costs of everything are rising and as necessities increase in price buying things for hobbies and entertainment are going down. Is it the end of GW and WH40k? I think not by any stretch of the imagination. I think the ranks of the hobby will dwindle a bit, and certainly newcomers will be put off.

All I can say is God love ebay/onlinediscounting. Ben, if times get rough, I'll always be willing to trade some of my GKs for some of your BTs!

i dont think its going to make any difference to what i buy or how much i spend - just how long it takes me to get everything i want.

i may "panic buy" a couple of items (anyone know if Greenstuff is included in the list of items that are rising in price?) that i was going to buy eventually anyway (just to dodge the increase), but thats about it.

to be honest, after my splurge at the WHW weekend/start of 5th ed, my only remaining planned purchases for the rest of this year is an issue of WD (the next one, with the free figs) and the SM Codex (compulsory purchase). aside from bits on ebay and the odd pot of paint, i hope not to buy anything else until the end of the year.
(i want the Thunderfire, obviously, but im not going to use it yet, so there is no point in buying it as soon as it comes out - it can wait)

next year i hear the new IG Codex is coming, so that will be an ideal time to finally build my PDF (im not starting them until i get the book in my hands, as i know i will have to revise my list) - but that will mostly (if not completly) be plastic, so should be unaffected by the increase.

but no, i was more affected when they stopped the bitz service...

cheers :)

^^This

*shrugs* I do a lot of price analysis in retail (and have done since I graduated in 03), it's a fact of life.

GW will only get cheaper if it abandons it's store estate, and I think that would be a bad move for the whole industry, not just GW.

They increased prices when costs of production were relatively low ("because we're a luxury product  ") and now that the actual raw materials+ energy consumption etc are up and most folks predict the tide will crash and labour costs have to start going up soon= an almost legitimate price rise? Nah its time to start selling non luxury products in a time when no one can afford something with the"luxury" sticker..which analisyt was it who said "always invest in steak and mince for good times and bad"..GW should be encouraging its cheaper production products (but not by pricing the other ranges out) instead across the board they are sewing up the incentives (or as I'm sure they refer to it as loopholes)..such as the battle boxes..most rumours say the AOBR box will the last box to cost so little. (hence the almost panic buying of it)
They had some big thing a while back where they realised that all they had left was nutters who would spend £60 to get a landraider and that they didn't like nutters.. they liked more people to buy stuff (so they could freeze out the nutters voices).. but they couldn't work out why sane people wouldn't buy a landraider if it was priced the same as a conctuction kit of a similar model with a real 2 stroke engine inside.
GWs pricing policy is nearly always insane (or at least badly motivated by some idea it can patronise its loyalists),I reckon of members on this site I have spent the least to get the most and I still gripe about it (even after only ever sniping deals, blagging hand me downs from retirers, getting the biggest discounts etc If i paid full price I wouldn't have 1 army let alone 6..
(If anyone wishes I could chock up a quick tally of decent models: spending, to compare but it would only make you go   )
But if I groan so what- if I say no more so what..Its previously been discussed elsewhere that you've spent 10 years in the hobby, you've spent your money..your now dead weight buying occasionally but expecting more and groaning (post peak).they are looking to the you whose ten years younger so get out the way.. I'll carry on only buying at super super double double discount in my slow and purposeful way.
If you can't just buy robottech and all the other miniatures that are cheaper and more varied and use them in 40k. (E.g. that insane after nuclear war cowboy game with its awesome defiler\soulgrinder like model at half the price etc)

Greenstuff
buy grey stuff its cheaper buy the lb and i (and mr 6) find it better.. I'll be back with a linky in a mo

This..is greenstuff http://www.sylmasta.com/acatalog/Creati ... tties.html
this is grey stuff (superior IMO)

KMB: Grey and Green are just different. They have different uses just like Brown is different and has a different use.

Baragash: I agree that the retail footprint is driving GW at the moment. They have a 70% gross margin and barely turn a profit (or have a loss) so there is a lot of expenses from their gearing.
I think there are better ways to handle the fuel prices on their part but that is because I was a freight costing manager for a couple of years for a global fortune 100 company. I had to be creative at controlling costs because our customers were in no way price insensitive.

Tim: I still may panic buy. :( We have a month.

Reaver and Norse: Just let me know how much you have and how much you want. ;)

my WD newsletter just arrived in my inbox, with this announcement:

PRICING UPDATE
As everyone knows costs are going up all over the world, and just like everyone else we are seeing increases in the price of oil, metal, printed materials and transport. Up until now we've absorbed these increases, but the recent and dramatic doubling in the price of tin is simply something we are unable to ignore and therefore some of our prices will be going up too.

As from 29th September 2008 we will therefore be increasing the price of all metal models as well as a selection of other items including most of our books and some accessories including paint.

The good news is that we do not intend to raise the price of our plastic kits at this time which means Games Workshop's plastic range remains excellent value for money for all hobbyists. This has also encouraged us to accelerate our plans for expanding our plastic kit range even more quickly so keep a look out for new projects in the future.

so now its official... :(

I'm going to resist panic buying, but I'll have to look long and hard at future purchases. Probably next up is SM Codex (obvious reasons) and then I'll sit back and finsh what I have before jumping in to new models. (Although I do have to admit that I really do want a thunderfire! )

someone on Warseer suggested that the price of the Thunderfire already includes this upcoming increase, so it shouldnt be getting any more expensive...

hope thats true - i think i will get one for my birthday. :)

They are still in the original boxes, never opened them. I am willing to trade, so if you have something Deathwing or Tau, I am up for that...

Or we can agree on a price. Up to you.

I heard it will now be $40 in the US. I don't know what it was before.

By Deathwing you mean Terminator Sprues? I have those. If you want Tau what do you want. Actually I guess we should PM so everyone else don't have to read it. LOL

I think it always was $40 US. Here is the link to GW US: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... tyle=wh40k

It doesn't look like the price increases have been put in place yet, the codex is still listed at $25. I'll have to pre-order. If GW raises the prices by 25%, that wipes out most online sites 20% discount

That is good. I have been looking at bits of tubing though to build that Thunderfire Cannon. Another alternative I thought of was to put an Empire Volley Gun on an Epic LandRaider.

That would work, or you could find a scale model of one of these;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliath_tracked_mine

and use your multi-tube idea on it.
