Bit hard to see what it is from the picture and I don't have the frame myself to check. What does it look like it could be?

I take it none of the pictures of the painted models show it?

arent they spent ammo cases in a small pile? (like on the proper dread base?)

That is the piece with the large peg on the other side, isn't it? I have no idea if it is supposed to be on any specific model. I didn't use mine. However, that peg looked to be the right size for putting in the holes found on the 40mm base.

Yeah. Its for base decoration. It is very similar to the bits that the LotR mounted figures have for their bases. Just a bit of decoration.

There are a few of these, there are also a couple of skulls with bolter holes in them. They are probably decorative elements that can be used on any base, but Culven is correct that the peg fits the holes in the 40mm bases.

That might also explain the Ork Warboss with Powerfist and Multimelta. Perhaps one shouldn't assemble models with their eyes shut, eh?
