Ljundhammer goes to the GT!

Postby Ljundhammer » Mon Nov 24, 2008 8:56 am

Morning all,

I thought I'd bore you with a short reprive of my GT Heat 3 experience.

The army I took:

HONEY BADGERS (DeathWing army)

HQ: THE GRAND BADGER - 130pts
Belail - Twin Lightning Claws

HQ: THE GRAND INQUISITOR - 145pts
Interigator Chaplain - Terminator armour

TROOP: DeathWing Terminator Squad - 225
Storm bolter & power sword x 1, Power fist & Stormbolter x 2, Chainfist & storm bolter x 1, Power fist & heavy flamer

TROOP: DeathWing Terminator Squad - 250
Storm bolter & power sword x 1, Power fist & Stormbolter x 2, Chainfist & storm bolter x 1, Power fist & assault cannon

TROOP: DeathWing Terminator Squad - 225
Storm bolter & power sword x 1, Power fist & Stormbolter x 2, Chainfist & storm bolter x 1, Power fist & assault cannon

HEAVY: Land Raider - 250

HEAVY: Land Raider Crusader - 250

Total points: 1500pts
Total models: 19 (lowest at the tournament I think, but sadly no prize :()

I wasn't too optomistic going into the tournament. Expecting to see twin lash prince obliterator spam, banshee spam, ork biker nob spam, I felt my outlook would be poor...

Belail's been on report lately for poor performance, so be prepared for alerts to anything he does that's note-worthy.

Game 1
Verses: Shiney Blue Eldar - Michael
Mission: loot counters & table quarters deployment - loot counters used - 3
His List (approximate):
Autarch, jetbike, about 9million attacks on the charge...
Farseer, jetbike, psypowers to reroll saves, reroll wounds & all sorts!
10 x Warlocks, jetbikes and a load of fancy stuff - run with both HQs
4 units of 3 x jetbikes
3 x prism cannons

First impressions: well I won't have many tanks left & his jetbikes will take the objectives. What's this big flying unit do?

How it panned out:
He roled for first turn & took it. Deployed his big flying unit in the middle, 3 vehicles behing a building & put the rest in reserves.
I set up just outside 24" away in massive clump. HQs & flamer squad in the Crusader, everyone else clustered round the 2 tanks.
I didn't attempt to steal the intiative (hoping to be able to nueter his 'steal the objectives on the last turn' tactic)

His big unit pussied out, took 2 turns of shooting (killing about 3) before charging. Wiped out a terminator squad, but the felt the full shooting force of the rest of my army - they were taken down to the HQs + 1 guy, failed a leadership test & were last seen halfway back to Ulthwe.
His tanks didn't scratck my tanks all game, and in thanks received no return fire.
I held my right hand objective with a 4 man terminator squad, 3 of his squads had wimped out of assault cannon death & hid on an objective in the big building his tanks had hidden behind on my left.
That left only the central marker. It was contested by a 3 man biker squad in terrain. But, a 3 man terminator squad was looking at them angrily on turn 5. He moved on tank onto the marker too. I raced forward with the terminators, getting to the edge of cover & contesting the objective. I shot the bikes, 2 died but the last held firm. I rolled to assault him, hopefully gettinmg the chainfist on the tank too. All I needed was a 3 to get in. I rolled a 1 & a 2 :(. There the game ended

Result: Draw - 1 loot counter each, one contested
VPs - about 800 to me, 500 odd to him (I think)

Game 2:
Verses: Dark Eldar - Stuart
Mission: capture the flag - 12" in
His List (actual):
Archon - Agoniser, pistol, Shadowfield, Combat drugs, plasma grenades
3 x Heamonculi - jet bike, scissorhands, destructor, haywire grenades (one with Plasma grenades
Warrior squad x 4 - 6 man, blaster, Dark lance
Warrior squad x 2 - 6 man, blaster, splinter cannon
Raiders x 6 - Dark lance, horrorfex
Ravager x 3 - each with 3 Disintegrators, horrofexes

First impressions:
Dark Lances - how many? Oh just 10, that's fine then...
What do disintegrators do? Oh, strength 7 AP2 blast, that's nice...
I know archon is cool, what about the haemonculi? Oh they have flamers that have a random AP. So it can be AP2? Oh yes, that happens quite a lot with my rolling... :?

How it panned out:
As expected really. It took him till turn 6 to take out my tanks (both still shooting till then). The disintegrators lived up to their name & disintegrated my terminators.
BELAIL KILLED THE ARCHON! BELAIL KILLED THE ARCHON!
I took out 5 raiders, 1 ravager, 3 squads of warriors, 2 haemunculi, and an archon in a pear tree. He wiped me out to a man & managed to get a warrior squad in a raider on my objective.
Stuart was a nice guy & my favorite opponent of the weekend. Despite annihilating me!

Result: Loss - 2 bases to nil
VPs: 700 odd for me, 1500 for him. It's a dark day at Honey Badger HQ. Belail is parised for his martial prowess, but needs to marchal his troops better...

Game 3:
Verses: Necrons - forgot your name, sorry!
Mission: Kill points - Dawn of War
His List (approximate):
Lord - destroyer body
3 x 10 warriors
2 x 4 destroyers
2 x tomb spiders
1 x a squad of 3 scarabs
Monolith

First impressions:
Necrons - this'll be fun...

How it panned out:
This is my army's forte, the mission, the set-up play into my hands, can I capitalise?
He elects to go first & sets up 2 warrior squads behind separate big rocks at the back of the board with his lord. I place nothing, I do not want the initiative.
He brings on this stuff. The final necron squad hides behind a building. The destroyers hold fast with the central warriors & lord, and the tomb spider come on & run (!) at me. The scarabs turbo boost at me! THe Monolith lurks from reserves, awaiting its chance to deepstrike.
I bring my army on at one corner opposite the scarabs, on the side with 2 tomb spiders, but away from 2 squads of warriors which are now effectively out of the game. I shoot the scarabs & kill them all, & woundf a tomb spider with a lascannon - 1 KP to nil.
Turn 2- the Monolith deepstikes behind me & starts throwing ordinance at me. I'm a land raider, I don't care... The desstroyers move up & get me in range, both open up on a single terminator squad - no casualties. The tomb spiders run at me again!
I kill both tomb spiders, why was he running them at me? 3 KP to 0
Rest of the game - he managed to take out my standard Land Raider with the Monolith eventually, the destroyers decided to shoot me from 20" away, so had return fire from my terminators (why? they've got a 36" range - wierd...). He managed to kill 4 terminators, I killed 3 of one squad of destroyers.

Result: Win, 3 KP to 1
VPs: 148 to me, 250 to him
I felt a little ashamed by this one. He played & set up like a noob & I punished him for it mercelessly, running away from the bulk of his army meant it was my 1500pts playing about 700 of his - the result was inevitable. But running his 3 easiest to kill VPs at me was stupid - I would have had a much harder time assaulting 30 necrons and a lord - but I didn't need to.

End of day 1: 1 Win, 1 loss, 1 draw - target to qualify - 3 wins, 1 draw - I'm not gonna make it!!!!!!!

To be continued...

Ohhh, it's day 2. Another chance to get through, but I really can't lose today to have a cast-Iron chance of qualifying...

Game 4
Mission: Capture the flag, table quarters
Opponent: Khorne Bezerkers - Toby (no, not that one)
His list (approximate):
Lord - MoK - naked otherwise!
Daemon Prince - Wings, MoK
Greater Daemon
Dreadnought - 2 x CCW
Dreadnought - TLLC, missile launcher
3 x 8 bezerkers & rhino, no power weapons/fists
2 x 8 Summoned Daemons

First Impressions:
It's a standard run-at-you CSM army, but without any power weapons or fists (even the lord!)
The big things don't scare me that much, I have enough power fists to take them down, but will I have enought terminators left?

How it panned out:
He went first (his choice - I can't figure this out, I won the roll once & made them go first, everyone else elected to go first - am I the only one who likes going 2nd?). Loads of stuff came towards my lines - I'd set up in a block next to my HQ which was in terrain on my right. I'd left one squad to DWA as a distraction & attempt on his Base.
I DWA'd my squad on my far left out of charge range of any bezerkers (all of whom were in rhinos) and scattered within 1/2 inch of the table edge, shot a rhino & missed with the assault cannon. The rest of my army moved backwards & opened up on the Daemon Prince (the only thing that could get to my lines by turn 3), no wounds :(
I took out a rhino going at my base on turn 2, none of his daemons turned up, no casualties to me on my right. On my left, a squad of bezerkers went across to deal with my DWA squad, they hoofed across in their rhino, jumped out & opened up with their bolt-pistols - 2 DEAD TERMINATORS! Ahhhhh!
Turn 3 it started getting messy. THe DWA squad assaulted the bezerkers & killed them over a couple of turns for another dead terminator. On the right the assault Dread & DP ran at me more, I moved back & finally assaulted him - he was quite shocked by that, but I had no choice... The bezerker squad I'd blown up their rhino ran back to get their own base from the DWA terminators which were trying to get there. Dread took a few turns to take out (Imobilised, weapon deatroyed, weapon destroyed, wrecked) The DP took out 3 terminators, but was annihilated by charging rerolling powerfists & my ICs. His fire support dread rolled for double shoot & the lord took it in the face from 2 lascannon hits - that saved me from bothering with him!
He sped his rhino'd bezerkers in their rhino into terrain to contest my base. 2 turns later (in turn 7!) I finally killed them all.
Over on my left 2 terminators contested his base on turn 5, but proved to be no match for 2 full 8 man daemon squads and a squad of bezerkers, so many attacks, so many ones...
Had it finished on turn 6, my opponent would have won, as he was contesting my base & holding his - praise be to the Emperor for turn 7!

Result: Draw - 1 base each
VPs: can't remember - about 700 each I think

Game 5
Mission: Loot counters, DoW - 3 loot counters, right, left & centre
Opponent: Fallen angels (CSM) - Robert
His list (approximate):
Huron Blackhart
9 x CSM, meltagun, powerfist, rhino - Huron goes here
10 x CSM, meltaguns, powerfist, rhino
2 x 5 man summoned daemons
6 x possessed in a land raider
Dreadnought, CCW & missile launcher
Obliterator

First Impressions:
This is a gimmie. No lash, 1 obliterator, no vindicators, no monsterous creature - schoolboy errors - it's a space marine list with none of the special rules - yay!

How it panned out:
He went first.
Deployed his rhino with HQ & squad at 24". I didn't deploy. His stuff came on, not too exciting. His squad that had set up move towards my edge of the table (!) and disembarked(!!!). I rolled on & my entire army shot at that squad, result, on Huron was left with 1 wound.
From there on it got worse and worse for him. I charged his other squad with terminator squad & they fled. Those terminators then took the right hand objective by assaulting a squad of daemons & held it without being shot at from turn 3 to 6. His possessed assaulted the HQ's & flamer terminator squad along with the obliterator which Deepstuck on a previous turn. They all died swiftly as BELAIL KILLED THE ENTIRE POSSESSED SQUAD ON HIS OWN! To make up for this act of herosim he was boltered by a rhino & failed both his armour saves, which killed him!
Huron was crusadered to death.
By then end of turn 6 the game ended, I had 2 counters, was 4" from the third, I had both raiders alive & all my terminator squads were alive. He had a land raider.

Result: Win! 2 objectives to 0
VPs: about 1250 to 700.
Looks like a lot of work for my interregator chaplains when I get these back to Dark Angel HQ!

Game 6
Mission: Kill points, 12" deployment
Opponent: Blood Angels - Matt
His list (approximate):
Mephiston
Chaplain & 4 DCs in a rhino
2 x 10 man assault squads with powerfists
5 man tactical squad
5 man devestator squad - 4 x missile launchers (oh how I laughed)
5 man scouts
Baal predator

First Impressions:
This is a gimmie. All I have to do is avoid Mephiston - he'll hurt! Other than that, only the Baal can penetrate my armour - guess my tactics?

How it panned out:
He made CATASTROPHICALLY bad desicisions. He went first & deployed his assault marines on one side of the board with mehiston & the devestator squad, everything else on the other side. I deployed on the side with the Baal (I think my repeatedly telling him the only thing my tanks were scared of was the Baal made him think that I would rather be opposite the assault marines than that - au contraire mon amie). My whole army opposite them, 2 squads in LRs, one hiding behind.
His Baal & rhino moved forward, Baal out of range by 1/2". Missile launchers open up an optomistic volly on the basic LR & shake it! Swines! His assault marines do not move (eh?)
I assault cannon the rhino & immobilise it, lascannon (PotMS) misses the the Baal.
He moves the baal forward 6" opens up, nothing, missile launchers again shake my LR - magic rockets or what? Again his assault marines do not move.
My LR is full of terminators. His Baal is 18" away & completely unsupported. He gets charged & his Baal is toast. THe crusader destroys the Rhino & the DC pile out the opposite side of the wreck from the Baal & a squad of squishy terminators.
Turn 3, he shoots, nothing. The assault marines start flying at me, but it's too late, the DC run away to save their KPs I think?
I get back in my Tanks and run away. He doesn't catch me before the game finished on turn 6.

Result: Win 2KPs to nil
VPs: 180 to 0 - I didn't lose a model, the only damage I had all game was the LR being unable to shoot normally for 2 turns.
Again, a nasty game for my opponent, but a win's a win!

Overall result:
QUALIFY WOOOO! 32nd, 3 wins, 2 draws

Summary:
I was full of win. I didn't make a mistake all weekend. I'm really pleased with myself - I've never qualified before.
The Dark Eldar loss was tough, as there were only 2 DE armies there, but I can't complain about having 3 marine armies on day 2 - just what my army excells against...

How will I do at the final?
I'm going to get ***censored*** The only armies I'll beat will be really well painted :(

Nice, You've got to hold out a bit for the necron guy.. he just didn't take a Mr6 list with a Mr6 in control.. his perpetual destroyer spam sat at 35.5 makes everything else taste like it needs seasoning with a certain mature lactose :D
Shame Mr6 didn't bring out his dark eldar before they were painted sounds like they are very similar forces.
Looking forward to reading the last 3 battles (and hearing from the other folks I'd just posted a thread saying get on with posting dem bat reps when you popped up.. 8) )

Edit and if Mr6 is lurking " I told you seer councils were back :P "

Only if they're on jetbikes...

All our group layed at least one, and ther other guy who qualified fought 3!

I can't see why they're so good. The one I fought was over 700pts all in & they die to massed fire power relitively easily. I can see them messing up a guard army in CC, but I think they are a draw unit rather than a win in the scheme of things.

However, I must be wrong considering the number that qualified (not many in the top 10 though...)

EDIT - part 2 up now

An exceelent weekend's work there then James. Well done :) Congratulations on qualifying!

As to "am I the only one who likes going 2nd?"... no, I prefer it more often than not... depends on the mission and opposing army though. I certainly don't go first without thinking why I'd want to!

Cheers Matt. I felt a little bad, but a tournament army needs to be able to deal with any eventuality, and his didn't, so I took advantage of that.

His Mehiston cut a sad figure though. Flying around with no-one to kill. Poor Mephiston.

RE: the Necron Guy. I was talking to him at the end & it turns out he's been going for 12 years & qualified in 'about' 10 of them. You'd think he'd know...

Cheers Nigel. I only write bat reps like that because
a) I'm too lazy to write more words now
b) I'm too lazy to write during a game

I didn't think I was going to make it at any point really, especially after game 2 when I was 1 draw, 1 loss. When I drew table 29 for round 6, I thought I'd be facing a nasty list, as it was it turned out gravy!

Sorry I didn't see you as much as I would have liked, I kept looking for you when I finished my games, but couldn't find you.
