Poking the hornets' nest :D

Postby Ranhothep » Fri Sep 28, 2007 6:28 pm

So, I have a feeling there might be LaTD supporters here, so lets talk about this pretty army. I have been thinking lately, whether it could still be playable in some way together with the new codex.

Of course the biggest loss is the armory, which considerably weakens the LaTD characters, but since none of us are power gamers (:rofl) I think we can live without it.

HQ

Arch Heretic counts as a Chaos Lieutnant or Chaos Sorcerer. We still DO have the later one, so we have an HQ! The aspiring champions cant get gear, so they arent very usefull. They can at least get marks and luckily they do have standard weapons, so they can fight. They are "playable" but not as good as before.

Elites

Big mutants are from the list ofc, so no problem there. Possessed still exist but demon packs are gone. I'd think reasonable opponents would allow you to use the lesser summoned demons in their stead, but in any case, you would do well, without the LSD's completely :) Lets remember, that marked chaos marines will fill the elite choices most probably

Troops

Mutants are still here and although the boss looses his power fist, even I have to admit, that it was a bit too good to have it in the first place. All in all, I think the mutants are still a very good troop choice. Nurglings ARE GONE! ....so what? Traitor sergeants were never meant to be geared up and dont need it as they are a shooting unit by default, so again, the loss of the armory isnt maybe that big of an issue. Also troops choices can be filled with allied marines

Fast Attack & Heavy Support

Here we will miss only daemonic beasts. The defiler has now all its upgrades listed in its unit entry, so the loss of the armory is irelevant.

The allowed allies from the Chaos Codex will round the army up nicely even tho it will miss obliterators, but again I dare say they were better than good in that army so its fair.

All in all, I think the army might still be quite ok to play with and even tournament legal, What do you guys think?

This hive, is not going to stir to someone throwing rocks at it.
The mutants don't just lose their fist :x
They lose their "I'm a vehicle for someone else" ability as well. Since the aspiring champs can't have speed.etc. Making only basic mutants a viable option (and I'm not taking the 400 mini list)
I think folks that based it heavily off guard seem to be handling it ok\(swapping over), as someone who merged in chaos and It was all speedy, I can only go :eusa_boohoo :llorar :mumum Etc etc.
Tourney wise the GTs have spoken (UK first and US this autumn).
Try to find out from someone who went to the ard boyz tourney what they were allowed, because that allowed LATD with the 4th dex.

My zoats are my spawn (not that I'm using spawn in this version again)

Not so much banned as just not allowed
The Uk gt has been rather restricted for a fair while ( at least 3 years, no idea passed that) in saying things like, core codexs of current releases only (they refer to the eye of terror codex as a mini dex or expansion codex and so have said its no good for a while). The US one had a last minute kind of change, similar to the AC one (which had a bit more notice). But yeah the closest to a global tourney thing I can think of for guidance would be the ard boyz, no idea what the adepticon lot did.
Gorgon (at warseer and I believe Dakka)is leading the charge for lets keep a good modelling and freestyle list in the list of main armies you see, (first he did a petition which you might have seen around the place, and now he's encouraging a letter writing campaign).
As you say the real problem is integrating the lists, which is why ard boyz views would be interesting.
(I'm just sat twiddling my thumbs hoping the data sheet keeps the traits\blessings)

Yeah, the loss of the armory does mess up things quite a bit, especially for those of us who liked using the LatD list as a 'counts as' list for other armies. It will make it a little harder for me to fit up a Squat army using that list, though an Adeptus Mechanicus list wouldn't be as hobbled (since it would probably be raiding the IG book a lot anyway).

For friendly games, one option would be to look at what options a 'normal' Aspiring Champion can take in the the new CSM Codex and allow those options for the LatD Aspiring Champion.

Ah, but with the new list, what does 'marked chaos marine' mean? Do Chaos Marines with an Icon count in this case, or would it only be the Plague Marines, Noise Marines, Khorne Berserkers and Thousand Sons?

The loss of the powerfist definitely hurt, since I liked using the Mutant list to represent squats and would use the old one with a powerfist in with this unit. If this were to be house-ruled, again maybe the weapons options open to aspiring champions would be available for the boss - either that or have them pick from the IG book (your preference as to what to convince your local group to allow...either way, you still wouldn't be able to get a power fist due to either IG restrictions or CSM cost).

The Defiler makes an interesting addition now that they've repurposed it. People wanting indirect fire will stick with Basilisks while the Defiler makes a better assault choice now if given the extra arms. There's also the Forgeworld Chaos beasties that they say a LatD army can take that will help. (Not to mention the aircraft, if you're into that).
