Ruination rumination on allies.

Postby ruffian4 » Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:58 pm

Well, us lot here at T.W.A.T. have decided that 6th will be on the menu.

Tbh, I am full of fears about what is on the way, but, maybe the allies rules will breathe some fresh life into things and actually reanimate some long lost armies.

So, I reckon a bit of sideways thunking might be goody goody gumdrops.

My world eaters are about to get some beastmen. Did I say beastmen, I meant ork boys!

My genestealer cult may well re-emerge with death cult assassins and an eversor.
However, this has got me to thunking ...

If foc choices determine what can and what can't, what about units that take up no slot???

For eg, the death cult as allies for ig.

Do I need an inquisitor?
Can I even have death cultists at all, as they don't eat an foc slot?
If they don't eat an foc slot, does that mean I can have a gazillion units???

Of course, the abuse level for this could be colossal, but, am I trying to rebuild a lost love, or patching holes in an ig close combat free zone???

I'm sure they'll have to put some sort of limit on it or we could see all kinds of game unbalancing hideousness!

In the past I had Renegade Guard / Cultist detachment with my Black Legion Chaos Marines.

I like some of the options from C:SM like Master of the Forge, Thunderfire, Storm Talon etc.... I had been thinking of making my force usable with any codex. This may now mean I don't have too.

Might even add a couple assassins. I like the idea of captured and reprogrammed Necron Deathmark (is that the sniper cron?) for a Vindicare :D

In the past, wasn't the rule for allies that, you had to have an HQ and at least 1 Troop choice for you chosen allies, then anything else after that?

I like your idea of (ork) beast men allies. May have to steal that idea if I do another chaos force. if the rumours about the next box having DA and Chaos Marines, good excuse to start Fallen... Or not.

Having not seen the new rules yet, I would assume that you still need to meet the requirements for a unit prior to taking a unit. So in the case of death cult assassins, you still need an Inquisitor for the henchman squad. However that squad is a freebie for FOC. What I see could be a problem is what FOC slots can be used for allies, as thta will naturally determine what is posisble.
The only "hobby" GW is interested in is lining their pockets with your money.

Has it actually been stated as fact that allies will be used or has someone just seen a list similar to the one in the WH 8th ed book and assumed that allies can be taken? If it is definite that they can be taken I can see this sparking a 40K arms race as everyone rushes out to add the coolest/hardest models they can to their army. With GW laughing all the way to the bank! I did see something on another website with regards to this and they showed a GW doubles tournament list from not so long back showing who could ally with who and the assumption was this would be how 6th ed would work, any body could ally with anybody else but you got penalties and bonuses depending on how far apart their alignment was. The 'Nids were the only ones who couldn't ally with anybody so not sure were that would leave your GS cult army.

Allies are plastered all through the latest WD. IG with Gray Knights. Seen many Space Marine forces with added Inquisitirial force etc etc.

I'm sure I saw it mention there would be a chart showing who could ally with who. But I may be wrong, I may have just seen that here.

Yep, you do, especially as it now seems that you can buy buildings as well so they'll be shifting a bit more of their stock.

Yes when I saw black templars and sisters of battle allying with xenos races the first thing I thought was "oh what a clever business model"..
Oh..no it wasn't it was..
WARD!!!! its a continuation of the greyknights dipping their blades in soritas to get holier weapons and bloodangels allying with necrons.. the final retcon that makes it right and proper.(/new majority paradigm in fluff)
That said I found the other thread too smingy to post in..and I have always wanted to use my assassins et al (demons and CSM wooo) together..
I even have half an aegis defence line somewhere in a box that someone left with me..
(from rumours aegis defence line and dark angel fortress are the 2 things you can buy..which to me is reasonable(quantifiable/expectable).. none of my early mistakes in gaming where MR6 homemade 2foot square aircraft hanger with no entry points except vertical that his tau or eldar jumped out of shot me and then hid in.)
Current competition stuff is doomed, balance (at the moment) appears doomed, but it does look quite funny- which is what a chunk of people were crying out for.

I think we'll be seeing a lot of IG.

HQs for the cheap psyker, or reserves manipulation depending on need. Hydras in HS, and possibly Vendettas in FA - all for the paltry tax of 100 points of guardsmen.

Do I think allies is good? Actually, yes I do. It gives more options, and until the netlists get bedded in, there'll be A LOT more variety in the armies out there. Lots of fun.

Buildings, I don't really understand it yet, so I'll wait and see.

HANG ON A MINUTE!

I've just realised that my radical WH is back! Carapace IG + Inquisitor + penitents. Just need a sisters proxy for the troops. WOOP WOOP!

So are my radical DH! Coteaz GK army with various silly henchmen + IG tanks and general fodder.

I'm happy! I can bring my silly armies back out!

Will Allies see an end to Codex Creep (Except for Nids) lol. I think it really is a genius idea, every time a new codex comes out all you do is cherry pick the elements you like (which will be the expensive box sets) and add them to your own dwindling core force. Im certainly going to add some close combat troops to my Necrons  Ill just make up some fluff....Brilliant
