Sirens Call in Swansea

Postby OWCriminal » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:36 pm

I went to the first of hopefully many Sirens Call Tournies in Sunny Swansea last weekend.

I have to say that it was a fab outing, quite a small number for their first outing the scenarios were tailored for the day, just 3 games so quite relaxed.

I took a CSM 1750 list Undivided.

HQ - Huron Blackheart
HQ - Daemon Prince MoTZ Wings, Warptime and Doombolt
HQ- Summoned Great Demon
Elite - 4 Term. inc. Mark of Tz. 2 x Pwr Fist, Hvy Flamer
Elite - 6 x Chosen (5 melta bombs) inc Asp Champ. 2 LC, 3LC in squad and Meltagun.
Troop- 7 x CSM Chaos Glory, Flamer, inc. Asp Champ. Rhino
Troop - 7 x CSM Chaos Glory, Plasmagun, inc .Asp Champ.
Troop - 7 x Plague Marines Plasmagun, Plague Champ with Pwr Wpn.
Hvy - Obliterator
Hvy- Obliterator
Hvy - 6 x Havocs inc 2 LC and 2 PC's

My first game was against a IG army, quite balanced loads of infantry and Heavy wpns teams, Russ with PC sponsons, demolisher, Psyker Squad of 9 (these guys hurt me a lot with their leadership reducing effect!). Hellhound and a valkyrie with a couple of vets thrown in with a full strength roughrider squad! Urban board with an impassable river flowing from long edge to long edge, two bridges and a diff. going ford the only crossing points.
These guys were given the first turn and they came on and wiped out my initial deployment of the DP and CSM squad seriously mauling the Plague Marines.
The Valkyrie butchered my Havocs and Huron led a charge of CSM with the flamer rolling double 2 for a needed 3 into difficult terrain!! The rest was history...even the chosen had to assault the demolisher having outflanked the tanks in his deployment zone, rolling a mighty 2 for penetration from the meltagun within 6"! Great win for the guard, wiping out my entire army, for the loss of two Vets and a demolisher!

The next was a Demon army, this was really nicely balanced with a bit of everything from the Codex, the highlights being the duel between my DP and his Soul Grinder, and the fact that his Herald of Khorne only arrived after 4 turns!
Everything wa on me by turn 3 the lines of my army really being stretched by the Oavane of Slaanes from the Face, his bloodletters wiping out my havocs in one round of combat and his Plague Demons taking out my Great Demon after 3 turns of assaults. The game ended a draw with honours even with Obj. Huron leading the charge in taking his, while his bloodletters took mine  !

The third game was against Dark Eldar, another nicely balanced army, with bikes, witches a Talos DE troops along with two ravagers and a host of raiders...oooh not to mention his nasty, nasty Archaon and retinue.....how many attacks at init 7? Lots of dancing around again, Huron leading the Plague Marines against a HQ choice on a bike with an agoniser and com drugs! A troop pf eldar warriors getting involved, killing off my DP all the PM's and eventually Huron! It was only the emergence of my Great Demon that saved my blushes  , by killing the HQ and causing the Dark Eldar to run off. The Havocs and Oblits earned their points by blowing up most of the raiders and the Ravagers! Win for me in KP's, mainly down to the transports.

Great Tournie with a really friendly bunch....even one of the Age of Strife was there, winning second place with his Zombie themed Plague demon army....cool!

The Guard player won first and I managed third!

If the guys offer this for a venue next year, book early guys!

By the way Swansea wasn't Sunny....I lied, it p*ssed down, all the time!

Yes, it was me (you all know how much I hate to blow my own trumpet ;)).

I took the same list that I used at the AoS Tournament (where I also came second...) but added 15 Zombies (Plague Bearers) and a couple of upgrades to my DP (Aura and Cloud) to take it from 1500 to 1750.

First game was vs SM (Codex), 4 Objectives (Special Rule: HQs deployed last). He had Tacticals, Razorback, Master, Honor Guard (thought these were Veterans, and I got a bit of a shock when they pulled out all those Power Weapons), Bikes, Termies and Dreads, plus maybe some other stuff. I managed to Score one Objective (killing Bikes and Razorback) and contested another (Epi and Zombies locked with 2 Dreads), but he Scored 2 others (Tac and Master on one, Tac on the other). I made a last ditch attempt to get the Draw by contesting one more Objective, but didnt roll high enough on my Run roll.

Second game was vs DE, 1 Objective each in Deployment Zones (Special Rules: HQs couldnt Contest). He had Arcon & Dracon (one on bike) and Retinue in Raider, Bikes, Talos, 2 x Warriors in Raiders, Wyches in Raider, 2 Ravagers, and maybe some other stuff. I managed to clear out the fortress where he initially deployed, and Scored his Objective with Zombies (lots of Zombies). He tried to contest with a Jetbike but didnt realise that he would be out of range (the Objective was on the battlements of the fortress, and the bike was next to it but on ground level, about 5" away B2B). The other Objective was hard fought for: I took it with Epi and his Zombies on the first turn, and spent a few turns Going to Ground as he concentrated fire on them. I then got charged by Wyches and Warriors, but managed to fight them off (go Aura of Decay!), losing the Tallyman in the process. I wiped the Wyches and chased off the Warriors, Scoring the Objective with the last remaining model of the unit.

My last game was vs SM (Codex), Kill Points (Special Rule: HQs worth double KP). He had Sniper Scouts w/Telion, CC Scouts in Storm, Vindicator, Whirlwind, Predator, 2 siege Dreads, Tacticals, Drop Pods, Master of the Forge, Bikes, and maybe some other stuff. He castled up in the fortress, with the Pred blocking the gateway and the Vindi guarding a breach in the walls. This turned out to be a great narrative game, with the Marines repelling hordes of zombies. Ku'Gath suffered a Mishap on my first turn, giving my opponent 2 KPs before he even picked up his dice. The DP and one of the Dreads traded blows for a few turns, but (having lost an arm) the Dread won. Some Zombies made it to the Vindi, and crippled it - but didnt quite destroy it, before getting charged by the Storm Scouts and killing them... only to be charged by the 1-armed Dread - who thankfully couldnt quite kill them before the end of the game. He made a wall with empty DPs, which slowed me down... but also gave me 3 KPs. I got my 5th KP from the Storm, which got too close (used its Flamer then got mobbed). The Marines held the fortress, but I think High Command didnt like the amount of hardware that got wrecked - he lost 3 KPs to 5.

I had a really great day with 3 fun games against nice opponents on lovely terrain. It was nice to see some new faces, and to play 40K with some of the regulars who normally play FoW and Fantasy. My only regret was not having a Welsh cake with my cuppa before they were all eaten. :P

I now have 2 different "2nd Place" certificates (plus I came 2nd in last night's Magic Draft at FNM...), which is a bit of a shock (the last time I played 40K was the AoS Tourney months ago). :D

Cheers,

~ Tim
