Spineless space marines

Postby mattjgilbert » Tue Oct 21, 2008 10:15 am

Well, the codex is spineless. How many other people's copy of the new 'dex is falling apart because of poor binding? I've looked through mine completely once and then referred to it a few times during two games. It's already got pages about to fall out. The other lads in the group have the same problem with theirs.

Should we all take them back to GW and complain/get new ones (although I suspect they will be exactly the same)?

the second mine starts to show any premature wear, i will be on the phone to mailorder for a new one. they cant charge £18 for a book that falls apart and not expect to replace it for me over and over and over again. :|

I've got some pages falling out too. None of my other codices (correct plural?) are losing any pages, and I take good care of my toys so I don't think it's me.
@Tim, you really think GW will replace it? I'll have to try calling them then. Will let you know how it comes out.

yes (havent some people posted on Warseer that their have already been replaced?). they might ask you to take it into a store so they can exchange it (rather than just send a copy with no proof that you even bought it, never mind that its falling apart). i guess they are by now fully aware of the problems with the book. :(

besides, when it comes to things like this, i dont take "no" for an answer, anyway.

fingers crossed i wont have to worry about it - mine still looks new and shiny. :)

the plural of "codex" is "codex books". :P

(doesnt GW say "codexes"?)

GW does indeed have "codexes" spattered all over it's site. It's not Latin, it's pseudo-Latin so has little nuances like this thrown in for good measure :P

I suspect it's a production fault that they've not admitted to yet. Mines a little suspect in the wear Dept. and I've hardly looked at it

Sorry guys its the price you pay, the SM codex is so Uber that to limit it at tourneys you have to have a pristine copey otherwise your army is banned.

Of course the mindless hordes who just follow the latest uber Dex will then keep buying pristine copies and increase GW's profits!

I'm sure they will swap it, they are generally good like that.

The problem here is that it is the largest codex yet produced, and as a former magazine publisher ;) glued spines have a limitation, and I think this has gone passed it.

Maybe they shouldn't swap it until they correct the problem... more glue sir?

PS mine is ok so far.

My penultimate page has mildly loosened so that you can see the back strip... the thunderfire army list page will fall out eventually, as it is I'm just not opening the book more than 90 degrees (180 being totally open with spine snapped).
The new 6 foam shelf army box I got from GW is of much less quality than the one I got a year or 2 previous..The catches were loose and wobbly straight out the box.The foam a lesser crispier foam that had more bubbles in etc.
bah..change makes me sound like an old man.

I have a very well thumbed copy of a paperback WHF Roleplay from 15+ years ago. The spine is perfect and it's about 3 times the number of pages as this codex. I have other examples too. There is no general problem with spines of that size, just the attempt to reduce production costs by sacrificing quality I think... :(

There is no excuse for bad spines on a book, if nothing else look at the excellent design SJG have on there books so they can be opened flat for play.

I have books here on my shelf with glued spines that are well over 1000 pages and they're still good and solid, even after years of being abused (door stops, stacked under monitors, etc). If it's done properly there is no problem with a glued spine - but I think to save costs GW are using a lowest bidder printing and binding company and the quality is nothing like what they used to use back in 2nd ed days; my AoD codex is still fighting fit and has no loose pages, despite being a pretty thick codex and very old.
