State of 40k

Discussion of anything 40K related

@ Bara - fair enough, I don't tend to deal with retail if I'm honest - the GW board isn't far off what I expect from large non-plc's and the AIM listed guys I deal with, although they are generally construction, manufacturing & energy sectors.

I agree with your assessment of Corporate Financiers though. A bunch of preening cocks.

What's interesting I think is the lack of Directorial representation for any of the major departments within GW. For a company of GW's size that's a little surprising IMO.

Typically I'd expect CEO, CFO (also including IT), Director of Ops (so responsibility for sales people and stores), Director of Product (in GW's case I would expect them to be responsible for manufacturing too, normally buying and merchandising), Head of Legal (not necessarily a Director, but fulfilling the Company Secretary role) and maybe a Marketing Director (though might fall under Ops at GW's size).

Instead it's set up in a "what does Kirby want and can we tick it off?" way, and that only works if a) the CEO loves the product* and b) the CFO is strong enough to shoot down unworkable ideas.

*I think "visionary" is the phrase they use in management text, and no, it doesn't mean they shoot holographic animals from their chest ;)

I must admit I thought the same - I googled Next's directors to see if you were right about retail (and you were), they have a director for every different type of jumper they sell, I think.

I think we're straying a bit. Although the fact that there is no diversity on the board, to me, shows that there is a lack of diversity of opinion as to what GW should be doing to get themselves out of this slump (or even an opinion that there is a slump). Which directly affects the £££ grab and the poor rules, so I suppose it is related...

don't need to buy a lot of GW as I already have them, that was my point... I think. That People with large investment in, and collections of, stick with it for those reasons. People who are out for a balanced game with little outlay and time In on the hobby have moved on.

Nothing wrong with either James, I was just identifying that there are these two groups, and the reasons they have gone or stayed with 40k

Competitive players have also gone, as its hard to be competitive in this game now cause of its ruleset, diversity, size., etc etc.

But for the others they can play fun games, with restrictions on whats allowed on table... :)

I would say my Bolt Action is my competitive game now and 40k I play in a very relaxed manner nowadays

I agree to some extent with you Nige.

The issue is that if you're playing 40k in a non-competitive environment, you need a stable playerbase to support that. I like playing long meandering campaigns, but if you don't have a number of players to support that type of play then it isn't possible. Within that circle, a number of restrictions & expectations are built up (whether written down, or simply agreed upon, or developed over time as unwritten gentlemen's agreements), any newcomer will not understand these and will make life rocky for a while. And if you leave this circle to play elsewhere these houserules will not apply & you'll be playing a different game to a degree.

That's fine in a large, well supported club. Those of us without that need to play 40k as written. Unfortunately 40k is written so badly that the full game is basicly unplayable for a "turn up and play" scenario.

So I don't play it.

I want to play it, and I'm still hevily emotionally invested in the background. But I'm sitting out for the moment.

yes I agree totally... I think that's the crux of it.. and I did mention it I think. For people who need to be able to just grab models, go, and play a game, with, possibly a total stranger, down at the local shop/club, you can't do it.

I'm wanting to go play in a tourney again.. but I'm not looking at 40k for that, I'm looking at BA.

So in answer to Bane's PM to me, you don't need to buy into anything else mate, coz the club still plays 40k as do I. But if you wanna be doing competitive play with a more rounded and manageable gaming system then BA is as good as it gets at the moment.

Oh, agreeing is so boring.

Where's KMB, we need a flame war!

I know a few people who play BA, I may look into it, despite my reservations about the setting. I'm not sure that I can get another gaming system past the wife though!

I've spent the last few hours thinking "what the hell is "BA" as a system?" Then I was looking at some Bolt Action stuff, and it still didn't click! I got there though, I got there . . . . :D

I think the way around this is either to arrange a game for the following club meet, discussing limitations etc, or turning up blind, use the pre game talk to filter a game you want. With all the extra flavours available this will make finding the right game harder than before of course, and might make it impossible. I'd like to think the vast majority of players are quite willing to compromise in some way, and the favour is returned in a follow up match. eg game 1: codex only, no allies etc. Game 2: anything goes.
Also, most importantly, you need to play the right player. The armies being played are irrelevant if your opponent is 'that player', the one who spoils any game with bad sportsmanship / cheating / temper tantrums etc. The armies are also irrelevant if your opponent is fantastic company, because you will both get a laugh win or lose.

Nuke the taudar + inquisitor + Imperial knight single army cheating taunting gitz from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

Well I bought the starter set and then bout the tanks so I have options. Lol. But still all fits into one kr box and I don't plan on buying anything/ much more.
