Sternguard ideas

Postby Freddie the fist » Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:12 am

Hi guys. Im about to paint up a squad of imperial fist sternguard. I want to paint thier helmets a different colour but not sure what. My tactical sgts have red helmets so i didnt know wether to give all my sternies red helmets or go for somthing complety different. Is there an actual colour they are ment to be? Plus i want to make the sgt stand out from the rest so weather i paint a stripe on his helmet or whatever. Any way ill be pleased to hear your ideas as i want to be sure before i start these guys. Cheers fellas.

People tend to paint Sternguard like veterans. The codex way to do this would be white helmets. This would then give you the ability to maintain the red (in the form of a stripe) for the Sargent and give a good contrast to the white.

They are vets so should have the veteran (1st company) colours. What's that for the Fists, is it red?

You could always do them halved/quartered with red/white or something.

EDIT: snap (almost) with latd :)

Insignum Astartes gives the codex veteran helmet colour as white, and given that the IF follow the codex pretty closely I'd go with that. I don't GW have ever officially given details on the IF colour scheme for veterans, so go with I'd go with the Insignum scheme.

Since you already use red for your sergeants (I do the same, either that or unhelmeted) having a red stripe will be in keeping with the color scheme of your force.

Personally I'd say use whatever feels right to you, its your army after all.. Im probably going to paint my blood angels as blood ravens.. I cant see anyone getting too upset by it and if they do I dont really care to be honest lol

Have you considered a white helmet (Veteran status) with a red laurel to indicate that he is a veteran sergeant? Then his rank markings would be more subtle than a giant stripe, and he would fit in with the white helmets of the others quire well. Alos, remember that Veterans are typically first company, so they would have white shoulder trim and may have the Crux Terminatus on their right shoulder.

id go with red simply because it stands out better against the yellow. then maybe give the sgt a white stripe to show that hes the sgt. remember that dorn fought against the idea of the codex so you dont have to stick to it rigidly like an ultramarine would.
whats that coming over the hill, is it a monster, is it a...oh sh*t its Kharn.

I agree that all-white with the yellow might look a little insipid.
