Throne of skulls

Postby Confused_gordy » Mon Nov 29, 2010 5:25 pm

Hey guys, went to the throne of skulls last weekend, though i should probably tell you how it went.

I took my wolf guard list, logan, a big termy squad (cyclones), a small termy squad (cyclone), 5 scouts, LRR, 2 lone wolves (thunder hammer storm shield)

Overall the new system worked reasonably smoothly, everyone was exceptionally friendly, as they all wanted those extra points on offer.

Game 1: Imperial guard, 2 objectives, pitched battle. I messed up by deploying my objective too far away from his, and had to spilt my forces, but Logan and his massive squad heroically ran across the field, while my lone wolves and land raider saw off the attacking forces on my objective. Logan took his home objective, and on the last turn had to worry about a command squad, and a weapon-less manticore trying to remove him and his remaining 7 terminators. In true heroic fashion he left his unit to take on the command squad while the terminators attacked the manticore with their chain fist to stop it tank shocking.

Turns out he had Stracken in his command squad, so Logan bit the bullet and they consolidated within 3 inches of the objective draw (note to self always look before you leap)

Game 2: Grey knights, 4 objectives, DOW. So I deploy on top of three of the objectives close together, he walks on the board and starts shooting, turn 5 rolls around and hes not left his board edge (I thought it was a little odd), win to me.

Game 3: Imperial guard, won this one too, but cant remember it.

Game 4: Blood Angels, 4 objectives, table quarters, my lone wolf beats his assault terminators in combat by 1 and walks them off the board (later we remember they were red thirsted and therefore fearless)(definitely didn't get a sportsmanship point for this one)

Game 5: Space wolves, 2 objectives, table quarters, objectives in corners. Turn one saw my land raider get immobilised before it got chance to move from the only lascannon which could see it. My wolf scouts showed up on the wrong side of the board, after 8 penetrating hits on a land speeder I managed to get one weapon destroyed result (the rest were passed covers), and Logan failed 3 armour saves in a row, all in all dice didn't go too well, but I didn't have much chance getting anything other than a draw after the immobilised LR. Turned into a loss.

Overall I finished joint second for space wolves (had I beaten the last guy I would have been first, as he won for the race overall) with 3/1/1.

The best part of the weekend was the rockband that bugmans had out. Lots of fun was had by all, unfortunately I did find that looking at the results, sportmanship points were basically scored by the people who lost most of their games, which brings me to the conclusion, if you are playing well, people don't like you.

And that kids is why we don't play tournaments with comp scores or soft scores...

Looks like you had some good games anyway. Well done - some good wins there!

Apparently the soft scores were required to have any difference between winners and losers.. if this is to be believed the events team had to take a time out and start evaluating who won based on painting.

Glad I dodged the bullet.
(I was there the day before being asked where the DS rules were by Gt-ers  )

All in all, my original assessment that the ToS had been destroyed as a tournament appears to be vindicated.

It's a shame really - I enjoyed the old ones.

Need a new tournament at WHW (North) surely?
