Why so much Marine Hate?

Postby BDJV » Mon Aug 25, 2008 11:18 pm

Just about everywhere I go on the net somebody is kvetching about the amount of Marine dexs in 40K.

I don't get it at all, GW are a business and SM's are their bread and butter. They outsell everything in the 40K line, so it makes perfect sense to me that they have a large focus on marines.

It's not like they ignore all the other armies of 40K to make marine dexs. Except maybe my poor Dark Eldar, but hey they even got an update mid 3rd ed. That makes the Space Wolves the oldest book in need of an update, but lord forbid I mention this fact anywhere it immediately turns into a flame fest.

Thanks for letting me blow off a little steam.

your welcome... now for the flame!!!

:D just kidding.

As a DA player and DE one, I also feel both sides of the coin... but GW hopefully know what they are doing, or atleast they would have us believe so... So if I want this gaming systm to survive, which I do, then \I'm prepared to give them the benifit of the doubt fo now.

Well you could have a very viable game with it being Space Marine vs Space Marine only. After all look at BattleTech. That was all Mech vs Mech with the same being available to all (with some racial preference but no requirements).

Now I know 40K is different and people would prefer for there to be more races but you can have a very fun game with the differences being in tactics and not base equipment.

I always try to give GW the benefit of the doubt, unless we are talking about their super secret release schedule. That's an entirely different subject.

i used to kinda get their point, but this was before i realised how dependant GW are as a business on SM sales, as well as the other benefits of updating the SM codex.

new Marine books are a good thing for a few of reasons:
- Marines sell well, more sales keep GW afloat, and generate more income for them to support all the other armies
- Marines are the most common army, so updating them more often affects more people, both players and opponents (redressing balance issues, shaking things up, creating more variation)
- Marine stuff can often be used in other armies (things like Landraiders, Dreads, Rhinos, Heavy & Special weapons, Servitors etc can be used in Inq & IG armies for example)
- Marines are a good starting point in the hobby, and anything that makes it easier/better/more affordable for new players has to be a good thing

so while i can appreciate that some people may be sick of Marines, or feel betrayed by GW because their army had to wait longer for its new codex because Marines have to come first, logically thats the way it has to be. its better if they just come to terms with it (and if you cant beat 'em, join 'em - a SM Combat Patrol costs less that £40... ;)).

besides, Marines dont always get things their way: how long have they been waiting for a (non-FW) Drop Pod model? :P

gavthorpe wrote:[on which chaos codex was best]PS Given an ideal world, my answer would be the latest book (of course..) with the addition of four or five variant CSM books like the loyalists get for their weirdos. Time will tell if this ever comes to fruition.

I get the nerd rage on them (even though they are my greatest model range) because they survived the condensing fever that GW went through..eldar reduced from 2 codex (1 just with traits and special cultures) down to one with pic what you want.. chaos shrunk in size and options (becuase options were considered cheesy) smurfs.. as smurfs but everyone gets furious charge + 2 modified or unique units...
the thing is I can't work out where I come out of my nerd rage do I say
"dammit thats so much overspoiled choice just for lazy painting and on top of traits\smurf whatever they do in 5th that will make it there flagship"
or "poor smurfs they have 9 codexs (or whatever) and nearly all of them are irrelevant due to their ridiculously samey nature (e.g. blood angels and ravens (new chaos :P )vs new smurfs..old smurfs vs black templars and old BA etc etc) I think the thing that stops me taking the pitying side is that by the choice of your paint scheme smurfs may now choose what where and when they have as scoring and X+Y no of units (which GW has said is the most important element of 40k now, and I'd agree  ) After all the hate chaos got for any warping of the foc using marks which then led to them having none (and even my nemisis the eldar dex only has one big unit that moves and they aren't scary)
So its not so much marine hate, its more prodigal son issues (why the hell did you cut off your fatted calf production company and increase the cost of demonhunters just to make more marines father :P ) and yet still at the end of the day marines are still weak as poop..which is why I play against an endless raft of termies and mech geq lists (I've played against marines 3 times in the last year thats less than 1.3 % of my games) and yakface's 40K rule #2: Friends don't let friends start a MEQ army.
So I can't get too grouchy about their love.

You was done :P ..400 points of marines should be about £15 (and thats including 1 speeder or 3 bikes) as the most popular army you can always buy a shelf full for a pittance on second hand sites.. and they are such a diddy model count in that baby bracket
