40K Bike/Cavalry Bases

Postby LordMalekTheRedKnight » Thu Oct 09, 2008 4:52 pm

hey all :)

by now im sure we have all seen the new bases that come with the SM Scout Bikes - like the standard cavalry bases but with round ends.

i have just gotten off the phone with GW MO who told me that they are due to be released in bags by themselves in mid November, for £4. he estimated that there will be 12-16 in a bag, and confirmed that they wont be "direct only".

this is great news IMO - i was hoarding bases ready to cut them up and make my own! :P

@ Gav/Taumaul: can you check to see if Gaming Figures will be able to order these?

cheers, and hope that helps :)

That is good news. Don't suppose they'll move the other bases back to non-mixed bags.

Hmmm... shall I replace all my already painted bikes' bases?

I probably will, there aren't that many of them.

these new cavalry/bike ones? the MO guy described them as being just them in the bag. :)

Spoke to the rep and he knows nothing about them and they do not appear to be on the Independent Stockists release schedule.

Have asked him to try and find out more.

Watch this space for further developments.

Magnetic Bases in UK Hobbycraft stores

Postby Darius » Fri Nov 14, 2008 7:28 pm

In my town there is both a GW and Hobbycraft store. The latter stocks basic ranges of numerous craft/art/hobby materials. It’s not my favourite art shop but has the advantage of opening until 8pm - useful for picking up paint after the commute home (or when the children suddenly announce that a school project needs handing in the next day and they don’t have A2 white card).

Anyway - I notice that amongst the GW-Hornby-Flames of War-Airfix stuff that there is a new range of modelling stuff old being sold under the “Gale Force Nine” name - reasonably priced plasticard; green-stuff (100g for £10 compared with GW 20g for £5); grey-stuff; decent looking hobby tools; flock and basing materials; super glue with accelarant spray etc.

Included in this range are MAGNETIC bases - including 25 x 25mm diameter bases for £7-50 - but also square and oval “bike type” bases. Why aren’t GW selling these?

(I didn't buy any - I use slotted bases.)

it turns out that the Bike bases arent available to independants - they might even be "Direct Only". my GW didnt have any, but i placed an instore order for them, and i should be picking them up next week.

i bought 2 packs of 5, for £2.50 a pack.

incidentally, i played against an Ork army this week that was using these bases for the Warbikers. they looked a little narrow, but that could just have been because the Orks are so big, and the bases are quite long. im planning on using them for my Ash Nomad Beastriders (Tallarn Roughriders on DE Cold Ones), among other things.

will let you know once ive got them. :)

cheers

Sorry Tim, but this looks like a right con to me.
If anyone moans at me for the square bases I bought stuff with, they'll get a belt in the mouth.

I just spent money on round bases (40 of, for zombies to become ig), which seems ok, but even that was because I got them for 5p each.

these work out the same size as the converted ones that were on the GW site (take a 25mm round base, cut it in half and put each half on the opposite end of a standard cavalry base, smooth with green stuff).

i know 50p each is a bit pricy but as cavalry/bike models tend to be quite rare its not too bad imo.

as to being a "requirement", the 5th ed base rules are (intentionally?) vague - the only meaningful part is don't take the mickey or your opponent is free to turn you down (which always has been how it is anyway).

imo rounded cavalry bases look better in 40k especially if all the other bases in your army are round too, but as far as im concerned it comes down to personal preference. :)

i picked up my order tonight (the GW was still open after the Xmas parade/lights were switched on, so i wandered in with my santa hat on and a travel mug filled with hot mulled wine :P).

the bases look great, and i look forward to using them. i wouldnt have bothered if i had had to pay £4 postage on top, but since i got them to the shop (i.e. free delivery), i think they are worth it. there is no flash, sprue or mould lines to remove - each comes as a separate piece.

cheers :)
