40k movie?!?

News and rumours

40k movie?!?

Postby Spack » Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:15 pm

According to this thread on Warseer it was mentioned at GD LA that GW appear to be involved in a 40k CGI direct to DVD movie.

HOWEVER, by far the biggest rumor came from the Black Library presentation. An audience member asked if BL had ever considered doing any screen-plays, shorts, etc. The presenter had a long pause, then replied with something to the effect of "Well, hypothetically, there could maybe be a direct to DVD release of some kind of CGI movie with Ultramarines next year. Maybe." The long and short of it was there is clearly some kind of direct to DVD, CGI 40K movie that is in progress, though the presenter placed massive stress on the fact that it was still not a sure thing and that he could not promise the release date, much less the fact that it would actually be completed (as reflected by anyone that remembers Exile Films' with Bloodquest).

It should be noted that the presenter also said that neither THQ nor the company that did the cutscenes for Dawn of War are involved, but that the movie would be "to that level of quality."

This might also help to explain why Damnatus was denied a release by GW - if they'd already signed an exclusive movie rights deal with another company, allowing the release of Damnatus as an "approved" film, even fan made, could well have jeopardised that deal.

I have been digging around and haven't seen anything yet. Perhaps it is being made in Korea?

LOL. Yeah I would say not.

Normally, if it is a US/Japanese production you see stuff online but SOUTH Korea does a lot of animation and often it is hard to find out anything.

If they can pull this off without any of the traditional stuff that movies seem to have (such as love story, or characters who seem to serve no purpose other than just to be annoying to the viewer) then this might well work. Straight to DVD is a good move for something like this too, as it may well not conform to the usual movie layout and as such won't sit well with critics, and may not pay for itself at the box office. And CGI would be the only way to pull this off, even if they only manage the quality of the DoW2 intro it will look impressive and should be able to convey the imagery of the 40k universe that we all know.

Here's hoping it's true, it's not too far away from release, and it's not going to end up being a corny storyline that ends up having the typical 40k fanboys denouncing GW and setting fire to all their GW collections.

And here's also hoping that the studio working on it doesn't give up part way through. I've given up waiting for the 2 Dredd movies that were announced years ago by Shoreline (pretty much the only thing that appeared was a press release in Dec 2001) :(

Being straight to DVD will keep a lot of that out. I don't know if you saw the direct to DVD Star Wars movies. They were traditional animation and not CGI but the focus was on the fighting and diplomacy of the Clone Wars. Nothing about how he loves her or what other in jokes we can put in to foreshadow that his grandson will be a floral designer.

i wonder whether they will be selling this in GW stores (next to the BL stuff, or maybe even on the counter next to WD)?

Those anime clone wars films were awesome (I've just weaseled a glance at the CGI summer release but haven't formed an opinion on it yet..)
the anime ones were created for cartoon network ( http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Clone-V ... B0006Z2LMO made me happy) I can only hope they do the same to K9 and not just homogenise it terribly..

EXcLUSIVE (wipes away spittle of nerd rage at corps) have you seen whats going on between fox and warner brothers.. the idea of an option to one day maybe do something involving a product line in the 80s is threatening the release of watchmen next year    (of course I understand this is all just corporate shenanigans and if WB wants to release it it will just pay fox 10 mill to shut up...but still ) (rant rage power draining nerd spittle ceasing flowing.....) I would hate to see the options to possibly do something in the future (like tescos owning vast quantitites of land just for off chances whilst not actually doing anything with them) squash the ideas of doing something in a realistic time frame..... (nerd rage gone) where am I..what was I saying Oh yes a GW film that would be fun.. they could probably do that now just by compiling existing (game etc) cut scenes in an ED wood fashion  (Diablo2 was sold with a cinematic DVD of all its cutscenes etc)

If I were going to make a 40K movie I would have it be about IG vs Cultists.

Tyranids? Too Alien
Eldar? Too Elves...IN SPACE!!!
Orks? See Eldar
Necrons? Too Terminator
Tau? Very doable but more work than just bad humans
Chaos? What rating are we going for?

Space Marines are very alien as well. I would have them in the movie but just as a force the busts in then leaves. The IG guys could even make comments about they thought Space Marines were just legends etc.

Actors can emote when you can see the face. That is why in Sci Fi movies they light up the inside of everyone's helmets. If all of the SM were sans headgear then everyone would just make fun of it.

Then again this isn't a wish thread.

Ahh but you were talking so much sense..a reflection of the 40k universe isn't all astrates..its worlds full of humies and such... and then the big fight scene might have 1 inquisitor in MEQ be all smug and hard to kill (keep everything big uber and battle wise for some latter thing when they need to have even bigger (GW 40k 3: this time its exterminatus)
(late edit Hang on isn't what i just described damnatus?? )

It didn't stop Judge Dredd taking his helmet off when everyone knows HE NEVER DOES, no sir, not even in bed.

The SM's could take their helmets off when waiting to deploy. They would then be able to have a touching scene when one of them crys over his poorly puppy dog. Then when he gets killed by the vile genestealer the puppy could loyally savage it at the cost of it's own life, with all big puppy eyes.... I think I'm going to cry...

What am I saying? Space marines dying.. nah, never happens.
It is not who we are that defines us, it is what we do.

Or after the touching scene, the puppy gets killed by the genestealer, it's genome is ingested by a ripper swarm, joins the greater hive mind and returns as a hive tyrant to battle against the marine, its former friend and master. We have a flashback to the touching scene, then the tyrant shreds the marine! Bwahahahahaha!
Holy Moley 8O what a great idea for a plotline :D (runs to get a yellow pad to jot down plot line to send to hollywood to get royalty!)
