Escalation - book review (EDITED)

Postby KInG » Sat Dec 07, 2013 9:44 am

Ive just read the book this morning. It is basically all the rules for apocalypse regarding individual superheavy and gargantuan creatures. The force organisation chart allows you to take one of these as a lord of the war detachment to primary detachment, just like fortifications. This gives your opponents access to a new warlord traits table and a chance to score VPs in other ways.

I feel like the book is just another copy and paste. As a concept i like the idea of being able to field a lord of war attachment. The idea of these bigger models being allowed in normal games. And without having to ask permission of your opponent also. Although he'll probably guess when you ask to up the points limits.

They could, however, have just given us a new force organisation chart and said refer to the rules in the apoc book. There are some slight changes to the rules and damaged tables etc, but on the whole it is apocalypse on a smaller scale.

The only army that gets access to non-ForgeWorld resin models are the imperial guard with the various baneblades, necrons with the tesseract/obelisk, chaos with the KLoS and the orcs with their stompa. And dark elder now get the Revanant Titan!!!!!

There is also a new missions section which I haven't read yet, but that is basically how the game stacks up now with this new addition.

On the whole and rather disappointing publication. I bought both books last night, digital versions, and will review the other book later today.

Any chance you could do break down of what armies get what units or a screen shot of the contence page? Obviously I'm only interested in Tau and Marines, but I'm sure others are also currious.

I've seen that the Tiger shark is it's own varient! A standard shark that can take a missile bay.... A lame tool for any Tau army, you can get far more fire power on the field for them points. The destroyer weapon of the AX-1-0 would of been the only real long range anti-tank we could of put on the field.

Nige, you don't want to see FW stuff in GW publications because then FW aren't allowed to revise the rules.

As for it being a C&P, what this is surprising now? ;)

FW do just throw stuff out and then put a little bit of afterthought into stuff (see endless "OMG FW is broken" "no look at the 99% of kack people don't take because its crap" balance level) just because they have slightly less concern about working to a fixed time span and can insert fixes doesn't mean they've created something unparrelledly more balanced than something where the rules mattered*

Then you have the exclusivity, when they are doing bundles of 2 rulebooks for only 100quid it would be easier to modify this extra arm to work more like those recent fortifications and other companies do*.

Then you have numeracy, aside from all the specialist lists and stuff, the 30k product lines now have more space marines than space marines do.. so why not just put them all into one big pot of continuity..and downsize a little to face off against the big fat hatred of place like this place? *

*inb4 this whole sites explodes in its whole hurr durr rules by GW are worst ever play with a yoyo instead bullshit.
Barely even lurking..

FW do far to much rules twitching. Every other book as a slightly different version of the same units in them invalidating the one previous. And this can happen in a matter of weeks nevermind months or editions. FW books are to expencvie to be replaced so quickly. It's not even like it used to be where you didn't need the IA books as their IA:Apoc books used to have the unit rules in for a fair price. Now it's just one shaft after another from that arm of GW when it come to rules releases.
