Modular Game Board

Postby jlong05 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 8:00 pm

Well, The modular game board has released. And with it, let another price hike. What the H^LL is GW up to. Do they really think people are going to buy 6 2x2 sheets of plastic for $290 US? I just have two questions.

1. What is GW Marketing and Pricing smoking these days?
2. Can they ship that stuff over to me? I think it is going to be cheaper in teh long run.

It's £100 over here, I can't see how they can justify a $290 US price tag when the exchange rate is about 1.7, even $200 would be excessive.

Unfortunately GamingFigures can't send this to the US, it's too big to go via Airmail (3kg and a case just over 2' x 2' x 1' is way over the limit), not sure about surface mail though, and once you go to courier it's going to probably end up costing more than the US price. GW UK won't ship it to you either due to the size.

what i dont get is that they make a big deal about how transportable this is, but they neglect to mention how you are going to carry all the terrain you need to put on it.

on top of the price, you have to paint it, and cover it in terrain. i look at it and then look at the commission work you see (like estarriol's ruin etc) and its not hard to see where i could get more for my money. i mean, who wouldnt jump at £150 to make me a better board than that? :?:

What the hell! It was £100 a few weeks ago. That's an outrageous price increase. I've even got the flyer sat here on my desk showing it's £100. At £100 it was just about believable - but £150 is just taking the yellow stuff completely and utterly.

Surely this is false advertising. Even the retailer prices list have it as £100 which is why it's showing that price on the GF site right now (I have notified Gav that the price has changed, there's no way we can sell it for even £100 let alone the £80 it was going to be given that RRP is £150 now).

They have a note on the front page of the GW site saying its wrong.

Having looked at it I could build it solider and to requirements for £100 including painting and finishing, finding a case to hold or transport it is proving harder though.

TBH, I find a another way for GW to charge extortional amounts for stuff that doesnt take that much to build, however due to the nature of my job and lifestyle it would fit perfectly for myself!

however I am also looking at prices etc to build my own ;P

WTF... we were looking at getting one due to the price it would cost us via the trade account when it was RRP £100. But at £150 it's pointless. I'd rather buy models to play on the table I already have.

GW will sell very few of these.

I was tempted to get one when the RRP was £100, but at the new price there is very little chance as even the trade price is too much for me to justify.

I see Ziterdes do 2' x 2' modular gaming panels for around 27 euros each - that makes a 6'x4' table around £100 (or 124 euros for the 6 pack MGT set) plus postage for vac formed plastic (and apparently due to the way they are made the panels don't fit snugly together, so you end up with a few mm gap between the top surfaces of each piece and there is no underlying support structure like the GW panels have to make them support heavy weights), and the quality is not even close to the GW panels, so the £150 price tag is actually not bad compared to the competing products; but I still can't justify it.

As soon as Zuzzy gets an urban mat sorted out I'll likely buy a mat or two from them.

I think this is one massive own goal.
The cynical SoB in me sees this as a way of justifying the price of the Total War set.
Now if you buy that you're saving £50... Gosh.

To cap it all, they're releasing a Scenery Painting Pack at £25. Go take a look and tell me that it's a value for money purchase?

I've not had cause to be this "unhappy" with GW for a long time... This though has ruined it. :(

I know I can make a modular terrain board at 6x4 for less than that (based on the fact I have done so in the past - a 6x4 desert board with hills, valleys and a river sculpted into the board).

That price is ridiculous, but no more so than the 4x4 sculpted terrain piece they had a few years back. Still doesn't make me want it.

I use Noch/Woodland scenics for many of my terrain making bits and pieces, and have seen the Ziterdes board, but even that was outside my budget.

Its a ridiculous price for what it is. Having looked a bit harder at raw materials costs etc, I can do it on a solid wood base, painted and finished for £75 for the 6 boards and then £10 to £15 each for any extra boards, depending on complexity etc.

Main advantage of the wood base is a degree of heft so the terrain won't get nudged by players.

Its a crazy price.

£100 would have been expensive but just about acceptable, half as much again is ridiculous.

So how long before GW tourneys etc are only playable on GW terrain boards?

It's an awful lot of cash for what it is. Whilst I couldn't make something myself and have it look better, I could do it for far less.
In fact, most of my boards and scenery were free, from GW Luton when it had a big broken scenery clear out. I fixed it, and (most) of it is still going strong some 11 years later, though a little dog eared.
What would the lifespan of the GW board be? Has anyone actually seen one to check it's quality?

I saw them at GD, and there are photos in my GD album. The quality is good - they are very sturdy, and the underside is ribbed for extra strength. I think you could jump on them and not damage them. The upper surfaces are nicely detailed too, but not so much that they'd cause problems with placing models on them. They fit together very well and come with clips to stop them moving apart.
