No US GTs for 2009

Postby Spack » Sat Apr 04, 2009 6:55 pm

The following has been posted by Chris of the GW Community Development Team in the US:

Due to some restructuring within the business it has been decided that we will not be hosting or running any Games Workshop Grand Tournaments in the US this year.”

We know this will come as a disappointment to many who have enjoyed the resurgence in the GWGTs over the past two years, and as such this isn’t a decision we have entered into lightly.

This will give us the opportunity to step back and develop an even better experience and overall tournament circuit that will be able to apply to all of North America for 2010.

In the meantime, we heartily encourage anyone looking to get their tournament fix in to participate in the remaining shows on the GW Tournament circuit as well as the other great independent tournament and events that will take place throughout the rest of 2009.

Yeah saw this on BoLS last night and it's appeared on DakkaDakka too.
Lot of cynical comments have been made about this, though I doubt we'll know the true reasons for it

Games Workshop is a hobby, ppl are always looking for cheaper and may start to look away from GW for the cheaper kind or all together.

GTs cost $$$ so they maybe taking a backseat till the predicted end of recession?

Its al bout costs and tbh i think GW has done a good job of not raising prices as much as other companys that have similiar dependancy models.

Well, as for costs, I think the GW Gts were always over priced in cost to value. Having just returned from Adepticon, and seeing how many attended(around 1000) which was an increase of a few hundred from last year, I think the want for tournaments is still there. It is odd of GW to take this stance given their push only a few years back to restructure it. Now they are saying it needs to be restructured again.

Anyway, Adepticon price to value was significantly cheaper, $30 weekend pass, and then event tickets for the specific tournaments you want to play. Overall the costs were kept to a minimum.

As for GW GTs, I was only going to be able to attend the Vegas GT, which now that it is canceled has eliminated me from any chance of the Circuit for LotR, but given my placing in the last 2 GTs I doubt I really had much chance anyway. :) (GitD 11 of 20) (Acon 7 of 34) My placements were not bad, in fact I am VERY happy with my Acon showing, only wish I could have done the TT at Acon as well. (Instead I played as the Ringer army for the tournament as there were an odd number of teams. Just didn't get scored. :( )

I hope they take the opportunity to focus on improving the experience for tournament players. I have only attended one GT, but I wan't impressed. For $85 I was only really able to participate in the 40K tourny with a little time for the GW Store. Shortly after the rounds finished on Saturday, the hall was closed, so there was no time for pick-up games. All of the other events were only run during the tournament time. Sunday, there was barely time for the tourney and awards before everyone was sent packing for their return trips.

Overall, I felt like I had paid $50 too much for what I was able to do. :(

So, a restructuring of the time tables and GT locations may be a very good thing for the hobby.
